Firstly I'm in the most annoying, headache inducing place in the whole of Malaysia, possibly the whole of Asia, which up until now has been very tranquil and zen. The internet cafe is also some sort of computer game cafe, full of adolescent boys playing war games - feel like I'm in about 3 different war zones at once. Took an overnight bus here, wasn't too bad, 10 hours though and I put my trousers on backwards then couldn't change them round. Luckily they weren't a pair of jeans or anything, else that would really be retarted, they were sort of the Malaysian equivalent of tracksuit bottoms, a bit like harem pants which I hear are all the rage at home but seeing as I'm unaware of what is and isn't cool anymore I wouldn't know. ... read more

Ever since he pounced on me saying Orang Putih! and knocked a Ringgit off the price, he's become my regular fish vendor. The lady in front of me seems surprised (presumably by my buying fresh fish), and he explains something of which I only caught "Duyong". Yup, I stay in Pulau Duyong I explain in English, pointing across the river to the little kampung island (as LP would describe it). She smiles to reassure me. My fish-walla asks his usual "two kilos?" to which I reply with my usual istinggo kilo which he repeats in English: half kilo? That's enough to last me three dinners, even with my voracious appetite. These are Ikan Kembong, meaning "fat fish", 9-10cm long grey-and-black scale-less fish: I daub them in a mixture of salt and turmeric before frying them. That ... read more

Surprisingly our Air Asia flight from KL was actually on time so we arrived in Kuala Terengganu at about 4pm. We intended on spending about 3 days in KT, however on the drive to our hotel we were already planning our escape. It was just a town, nothing particularly interesting to see or do. We ended up spending about 1.5 days there not doing a whole lot although we did go for a walk around the city to see the Sultan's Palace, a mosque, the foreshore etc. The Sultan's Palace wasn't particularly impressive. The building itself was alright, however he had no garden really...perhaps he should stop spending so much on the state and maybe splurge on himself...hmm. The Malaysian government is actually quite interesting. Most states have a sultan, and the sultans take turns (in ... read more

From the Perhentian Islands we took a boat back to the mainland and from there we took a a very packed public bus to Kuala Terengganu. We didn't have much planned for our time there but I hoped that we would get to visit Kenyir lake- the largest man made lake in Asia. We checked into a mediocre hostel and enjoyed our first McDonald's in a long time! Malaysia is a predominantly Muslim country and this was more evident in Kuala Terengganu (and the journey there) than it had been on the islands. Pork was off the menus and the women were dressed traditionally and covered their heads. We followed suit as much as the heat would permit us to! The town itself is actually very large and turned out to have a lot to do ... read more

On March 9 (Friday), we flew from Denpasar, Bali to Kuala Lumpur. We got in at around 9 pm (after a few hours of delay by Air Asia) and took a taxi to our guesthouse. We have about 2 weeks to tour Malaysia and could not decide on which places to visit. We thought we could visit Kota Baru (northeast end of Malaysia) and the Perhentian Islands, and then work our way south to Singapore. The next morning, we went to the bus station and tried to get bus tickets to Kota Baru. We quickly learned that it is now school holidays, and the tickets were sold out for Sunday. Rather than staying in KL for another day and leave on Monday, we decided to change our destination and go to Kuala Teregganu, also on ... read more

- right into an overhead post. I was pretty dizzy for the next few seconds and a little confused. Jen got me to sit down and when some poor old Malay guy came to see what had happened I started shouting at him: "Yes? Do you see anything interesting?". She sprayed so much disinfectant on my scalp that it was running down my face and into my mouth (disinfectant tastes bad). I was talking fast - very fast, asking Jen questions and then answering them myself. Probably the adrenaline. I found a bit of blood trickling through my hairline and decided I'd better head to the local hospital - I'd heard Malaysian healthcare was supposed to be pretty good. One taxi ride later, we found ourselves wandering around trying to find A&E realising we had ... read more

Hello, hope your all well. We are in Kuala Terengganu at the moment which is one of only three places in Malaysia with a Malay majority so it's all very cultural and well Malay. But most interesting news first...we had our first trip to A & E yesterday. Sam managed to walk into a bit of low metal roof and hit his head pretty badly. He was talking complete jibberish and shouting a lot so I inspected his head and found it was bleading. He was still talking jibberish so I got a taxi and we went to the local hopsital. By the time we got there he had calmed down rather. We had to pay RM50 (about 8 pounds) becuase were not malaysian. Sam saw a Dr then got a stitch in his head. When ... read more

The last time you had heard from us we were in Jerantut. From here we decided to go to Kuala Terengganu (a strict Muslim city) for a couple of days as we had time to kill and we read that it might have been an interesting stop over, off the tourist track, on our way to Pulau Perhentian. Rather than do the jungle train that gets you into the jumping off point for the Perhentians at silly o'clock at night. On the bus ride we headed up the east coast and passed through lots of little Kampungs (villages) some with just wooden shacks, women sitting around on their doorsteps in groups and of course little shacks for places to eat (asia seems obsessed with eating). The bus rides were quite pleasant and were a good opportunity ... read more

At the moment we are in Kota Bahru at the top of the eastern side of Malaysia. Tomorrow we cross the border into Thailand but at this stage am unsure as to whether we stay in the region for a few days or just keep heading north to Bangkok. We can’t get any information on the train timetables until we actually arrive in Thailand. We’ve booked a taxi to drive us the one hour north and drop us off at the border immigration office, where we then have to walk the kilometre between the two border posts and onward to the train station. We loved our time in Kuala Terengganu - the city had a strong Islamic influence and we seemed to be the only tourists there. We spent 2 days and nights there - we ... read more
