The boys left this morning to start their climb of Mount Kinabalu. I am home alone to chill out and do my own thing. We arrived in KK yesterday evening after a fraught hour trying to get tickets for the second leg of our ferry journey. After only just having enough Brunei cash to buy ferry tickets to Labuan, we went without breakfast. With Eid being celebrated at the end of Ramadan, the money changers weren't in business and we were expecting credit cards to be acceptable to pay for the tickets. Had a wave at Bruce's oil rig on the way past (our friend who is a commercial diver), we arrived in Labuan for the second hop to KK. Alan queued up for tickets for the last ferry of the day - big signs FULL! ... read more

veKuching, Sarawak 1-5 April 2016 We spent one night in Kuching on 30 March before driving to the Iban village on 31/3. We arrived by plane and almost immediately we hopped into 2 vans and went out to see the Semerggoh Orangutan Centre. As soon as we arrived, we saw over 6 Orangutans of all different ages and both male and female. Their antics are fascinating to watch. As their DNA is 97% the same as ours, their some of their behaviours are the same. Kuching, officially the City of Kuching, is the capital and the most populous city in the state of Sarakak, Malaysia. The city is situated on the Sarawak River at the southwest tip of the state of Sarawak on the island of Borneo with a population about 325,000. Kuching was the third ... read more

Serian & Iban Village Sarawak 31 March & 1 April 2016 After one night’s stay in Kuching, we all hopped into 2 vans to travel to a homestay in an Iban Village to learn of traditional ways as well as how things have changed since this head-hunting tribe have been influenced by the 21st century. We experienced the sealed but very bumpy roads of Sarawak. On the way we stopped at Serian to buy food for the village we were visiting. The markets were really interesting with a big variety of different fruit and veg. On my Borneo list included tasting Snake Fruit which we had never tried. I found some in this market along with star fruit (which is slightly like five-corner fruit). The snake fruit skin is scaly, just like snake skin. It has ... read more

Thursday 31st March 2016 Today we are leaving Indonesia after using up every day of our 30-day visa. We had a flight booked to take us to Malaysian Borneo where we wanted to see the Orangutans. We were heading to Kuching which is based in Sarawak but the cheapest way to get there and the best flight combination meant we would have to fly to Kota Kinabalu which is in the Saba part of Malaysian Borneo (following me??). We would stay one night in Kota Kinabalu and catch and early flight the next morning to Kuching. The taxi ride to Bali airport only took 1 hour despite the horrific traffic Bali has. We checked in our bags and made our way through security and made our way over to the immigration desk. I got stamped out ... read more

Mulu National Park & Caves 28 – 29 March 2016 It was lovely to have a sleep in until 7.45am, have a leisurely breakfast before departing for KK Airport. We were very excited about the next section of our tour as we were off to the Mulu National Park to see the second largest cave in the world. This is Deer cave, 1.2km long and the biggest cavity is 120m high. After a 50 minute flight to Miri to get stamped out of Sabah and stamped into Sarawak, we got back in the plane for a 10 minute flight to Mulu. We were met by our local guide Nelson, who worked for the Mulu National Park. Our group was divided between 4 vehicles of varying ages, to drive us 5 minutes to the office of the ... read more

So I have been on the great island of Borneo for a week now and it has certainly delivered way over any expectations I ever had on this big green island. I started off in Kuching city that is described as modern and hip well Im not so sure I agree with that but I will say they do love their cats and they have some pretty amazing national parks just on the doorstep. I started my trip in Kuching by visiting the Semenggoh wildlife center which is one of the best places to get to see semi wild orangutang and as soon as I arrived there was a mum and her baby hanging around playing and getting some treats so cool. This time of the year when its fruiting season in the rain forrest they ... read more

After a fantastic time stumbling through the jungle it was now time to head (back) to Kuching, our final stop in Borneo...we had originally set aside almost five full days here, with the intention of doing two or three day trips but we were now down to just four with having lost a day the previous week... No matter, arrived and made our way to our lodgings; a really cool boutique hotel near the waterfront called Batik...great place, rooms were good, location was great but it was the folks that worked there that really made the difference...very welcoming, would take the time to help with any activities we wanted to set up, but most of all we enjoyed sitting and chatting with them at their funky little bar over a cold beer... Orangutans and Bako National ... read more

Today I went to Bako National Park, which is the oldest national park in Sarawak, to go wildlife spotting. We set off relatively early to board the boat for the 30 minute journey to the park. After registering when we arrived, we went to the jetty ready to board the boat and there was an otter just next to the jetty with its head popping up out of the water, it then went over to the bank and got out and I saw it running into the trees - the wildlife spotting was off to a good start! The boat ride was pretty choppy on the way there, luckily I don't suffer from sea sickness! We arrived at the jetty and got off the boat, as I climbed the steps there was a macaque sat at ... read more

After one failed attempt to get to Gunung Mulu National Park and an unplanned evening in Kuching (due to the Haze mentioned in a previous post the pilot couldn't see the runway so we were diverted to Kuching), the weather decided to cooperate and we safely touched down in Mulu, the beginning of our jungle adventure in Borneo... This is one of the stops I couldn't wait to get to, and with a full slate of activities planned over the next 3-4 days it was going to be busy...checked into our hotel, and as the accommodations in the park itself were all booked we decided to rough it at the five star Marriott resort, sweet! Not a big selection of accommodation here, there are some dorm style hostels just outside the park entrance but we figured ... read more

So today was the day I'd be heading off into the rainforest. We were up pretty early, I went in the shower room which consists of a shower (as you'd expect) that isn't working as there hasn't been any rain for quite a few weeks, so a couple of pans of cold water was as good as it was going to get. I opened the door and there was THE BIGGEST cockroach I have ever seen in my life just sat on the wall. I called Eric to the rescue, he promptly ran off and shouted for Gatzam to sort it! Problem averted, so I went for my shower. Then it was time for breakfast the Malay Village way, fried noodles with really hot spicy chicken, sticky rice cake that was bright green, peanut butter pancakes ... read more
