“We are skipping the port of Sandakan, Borneo, Malaysia,” the Captain announces over the loudspeaker. He explains that we will pass too close to a number of palm islands where pirates can hide and easily attack us. Capt. Dag has chosen a wider path through the ocean which will increase our sailing time. So, we spend an extra day at sea and arrive one-half day earlier in Kota Kinabalu, Borneo. There always seems to be a silver-lining when our cruising plans are changed. The late afternoon arrival gives us beautiful views of the northern coast of Borneo. Alan and I sit on our balcony watching tree covered islands with long, sandy beaches and isolated resorts pass by. It’s a relaxing way to spend a cloudy afternoon but the gray day means no picture taking. At 6:00pm ... read more

On Friday the 13th we started climbing Mount Kinabalu. Our destination was Low's Peak which is the highest point on Mount Kinabalu, Southeast Asia's highest mountain at 4095 meters (over 13,000 feet). Mt. Kinabalu is in Sabah on the Island of Borneo and in the country of Malaysia. It was 10:20 when we left the first gate or check point, and I saw lots of interesting things in the first few minutes because we were going through a rain forest/jungle with waterfalls and lots of vegetation everywhere. Lucky for us there were not too many insects. After 1 hour I saw a dead snake and then another one. It was a 6 kilometer hike to the Laban Rata Hut were we spent the night at 11,000 ft. The hut had a restaurant and we had ... read more

To kick start this entry, I doubt this applies to many, but your patience has paid off waiting for some photos, as I've gone a little crazy and added over 30 of the little blighers to my previous blog. If you thus fancy seeing even more mountains, or a car-destroying parrot, just click that 'previous entry' buttom above. I figured, as this will be the last set of photos I can upload until I next put some on CD, I thought I'd treat you lucky lucky people. So where did I finish last time? Something about looking forward to saying hello to Penguins I think. From Dunedin I went on a long nature tour to the nearby Otago Peninsula, renowned for its amazing wildlife, besides a huge 20km natural harbour. While soaking up all the facts ... read more

PRE-TRIP "Hey, any plans for the March holidays? Shall we do something interesting?" "Sure! What do you suggest?" "What about let's climb Mount Kinabalu? We've got 3 months to prepare for it!" "That's quite an idea! Why not?" That happened in December 2002. 4 of us, therapists at a special school, decided to plan and train for the trip to conquer Mount Kinabalu. However, between December to March, we only managed to do a little 3 hour hike as part of our training programme. I came down with a bad flu about 2 weeks before the trip. The rest of the time, we were all too caught up with things happening in school. 3 weeks before "Have you done any research?" "Nope, I just booked the ticket for us with Air Brunei" "Do we need ... read more

Nothing much to say really, booked Air Asia flight to KLIA from KK.Dep 6am arr 8:30am. Jeffry and Jaqui (dive instructor and his divemaster partner who I met at Sipadan) also leaving the same time. Went to Kian Son waterfall - not a spot known to tourists and I'm not going to say where it is or how to get there. Three tiered waterfall with pools to swim in - no other backpackers just a dozen or so locals with their kids. Quiet and relaxing..nice way to chill and spend the day. Got back around 4:30 just in time to get my gear together and off to the mosque. As promised went up onto the roof and then into one of the minarettes for a birds eye view..again got some nice shots which are featured on ... read more

Took the speed boat service out to Palau Sapi (Sapi Island) and arrived around 11:30am after half an hour or so on the boat. Hardly anyone on the boat - about a dozen or so. Nice place, no crowds, a few tour groups and that was it. No monkeys!?? They'd all buggered off into the shade for the hottest part of the day so I did a bit of snorkelling - clean water, a few fish..basically just relaxed. My legs sure are sore - still. Went for a walk around the short trails pleasant enough... The monkeys finally appeared around 2ish along with the Islands monitor lizards especially one big bugger with big claws and a drooling mouth. The monitors are actually more afraid of us but the first time you set eyes on the big specimens ... read more
