I love living in Sabah. It's simply a beautiful place with fantastic scenery and great weather. Kota Kinabalu is the capital city of Sabah, with a population of about 500K. It was allevated to its city status in year 2000. There so so much to do here. White water rafting at Padas River, river cruising in Klias wetland to search for Proboscis Monkey and fireflies watching, snorkeling, diving or simply lazing around in one of the islands opposite city centre (eg Sapi, Manukan, Mamutik or Police Bay), climb the highest mountain in Borneo - Mt Kinabalu (4,095m high), trek in the rainforest, bird observation at the canopy walk in Poring, visit the headhunter village and many many more. That's all for my first message. I'll continue to write more soon. Ciao.... read more

Salamat Detang (we're back in Malaysia) Arrived in KK on the 15th, one day to look around and then we flew to Sandakan. We visited the Oran Utang Sanctuary at Sepilock, feeding time is a little like a circus, but as this may be the only chance to see these wonderful, creatures in the semi-wild, so we have to make the most of it!!! They appear to have great characters from the way they behave and interact with each other. Next it was on the move again to Uncle Tans for our "jungle adventure", lunch at Ops base before we drive to the Kinabatangan River and travel to the jungle camp by small motor boat, this was a wildlife expedition in it's self as it was evening by now and there were lots of birds, pig ... read more

Kota Kinabalu is the state capital of Sabah located on the island of Borneo in East Malaysia. Kota Kinabalu is home to some of Asia’s best natural scenery with magnificent beaches, clear waters teeming with marine life, lush forests and nature parks. Yet Kota Kinabalu has more to offer than its spectacular environment. It is known as the liveliest place in Malaysia after Kuala Lumpur with its bustling markets, café ... read more

Up at the ridiculous time of 2am for a trek in the dark to the summit of the mountain for sunrise. Quite tricky in places, having to haul ourselves up ropes on the steep cliff face. Louisa slipped behind to a slower group. After 2.7 km finally made it to the summit just in time for a fantastic sunrise and an even more amazing view back down the mountain to the valleys below. Then, even harder than the climb, we had to descend 8.7 km back down the whole mountain. Started off ok but it became increasingly hard on the legs and we slowed down. Louisa only just made it before collapsing with exhaustion due to lack of sleep, food and probably oxygen at the top as breathing was a bit laboured at 4095.2 metres! But ... read more

Mark & Lynn got up early to check the tourist office who pointed us to a booking agent for the mountain lodges at Mount Kinabalu which we intended to climb the next day. It appeared to be all booked up, but after some waiting and pressuring for the agent to ring around the tour companies we managed to secure 4 places which had not been confirmed. Unfortunately they were in 2 different lodges, one with heating and one without. I volunteered that the girls go in the heated lodge and it was agreed. We checked out of cockroach hotel and checked into the Pantai Inn, very nice but more expensive for 2 rooms so we shared a quad room for just RM108. Did some shopping, Lou bought bigger rucksack for the mountain trip, I bought an ... read more

Checked out and went to the train station, unfortunately the train was broke and was in the process of being fixed. Eventually it was all systems go and the train chugged off with us on it. This is probably the worst train I've ever been on and was definitely an experience! It only cost RM2.7 for the whole 2 hour trip! The train slowly swayed through the jungle scenery and river which grew more ferocious as we went on. Amazingly it made it to Tenom where we quickly took a taxi to a large hotel on the hill overlooking town where we had heard the Rafflesia flower maybe in bloom. It was, 2 weeks ago! The taxi took us to a local cultural centre where there was a craft festival going on with stalls of local ... read more

Well what a crazy time we have had here so far. We flew from Hanoi to Kuala Lumpur for one night, and stayed near the airport, paying $40 for a room which was just as basic as the $5 room we are staying in now, and then flew out the next morning to Kota Kinabalu, in Borneo. Only things weren’t quite that easy. We somehow managed to miss the flight. We realized we were standing in an international line for check-in but it was a domestic flight. So we found domestic, looked at our watches and realized that the flight was due to take off in 3 minutes! So we had missed our flight and had to forfeit our seats. We had to buy new tickets!! Luckily it was only about $100 each for the flight, ... read more

(Matthew) As often seems to be the case, we're writing two travel blogs back to back. Borneo has been a very busy place for us but it's been a lot of fun so i haven't minded. as i'm typing, we're sitting in the state library in Kota-Kinabalu. the internet here is cheaper than at the other places in town. plus it's nice and quiet. we left Brunei and caught an express boat to Kota Kinabalu. we had a fairly uneventful journey with only one stop. we arrived and went to check the places that Danny (from Brunei) recommended us to stay. the first place we checked was packed so we went to the second option. the lady there told us that she was all out of rooms for men and only had women dorm rooms left. ... read more

When we walk down the gangplank this morning, a colorfully dressed Malaysian woman greets me by putting a necklace over my head. Alan gets one too. Our Radisson tour, "Borneo Extravaganza" is about to begin. Our guide, Vicki, begins the tour by giving us background information on Kota Kinabalu. Now I know why there are so many modern buildings here. The city was destroyed during WWII. Soon, the bus passes the city mosque which is a replica of the Taj Mahal. This white building, with blue tiled roof, can accommodate 10,000 worshipers. There is no photo stop so we don’t get any pictures of the beautiful building. Our drive continues on a road that has been built upon land reclaimed from the sea. In fact, the entire area of new buildings is built on reclaimed land ... read more
