I have been here in Borneo for only 12 days, and have experienced a lifetimg of memories, and seen a lifetime of images. I do not want to leave, but alas my plane leaves for Bangkok tomorrow, to start my 4 week adventure in Thailand. I wonder if it will affect me like Sabah has? From the jungle I went to Semporna, for a night's stay before heading off to Palau Mabul. I was really moving up in the world, having a real bed (though the mattress was still only a 2inch foamie) and squat toilets with ceramic footpads, so you don't accidently miss the toilet (VERY embarrasing! and messy). Still no shower though. We stayed at the Red Dragon Inn, a beautiful structure on the water in Semporna. 0800 the next morning after yet another ... read more

After cleverly choosing to leave Semporna on Hari Raya, the holiday equivalent of Christmas Day, we managed to get out to Sepilok after lots of negotiating with rickety minivans and arrived hot, sweaty and tired in the lush jungle surroundings of Sepilok, staying at the little hostel lodge where we were the only guests! Was like our own private jungle retreat (complete with mosquitos and red ants), which was cool. Spent an evening relaxing, enjoying the jungle sounds and getting eaten alive by mosquitos then the next day went to the Sepilok Orang Utan sanctuary to see the adorable animals. Unfortunately, the main part of the sanctuary had blown down in strong winds a few days before, so most of the viewing areas and jungle walks were closed, so we could only see the baby orang ... read more

The Journey Well, after 45 hours of straight travel I finally made it to the island of Borneo, none the worse for wear. And I must say the whole journey went quite smoothly, unless you count me almost missing my flight from Bangkok to Borneo. Here's the story: A 10 hour bus ride from Princeton, BC to Seattle, WA. Uneventful. A one hour public transit bus ride from Seattle bus station to Sea-Tac airport. Quite eventful if you are a small town girl like me. For city folk I am sure what I saw and heard was normal everyday occurances. 6 hour layover in Sea-Tac where I met Crazy Dave who jumped out of planes for a living (very cool) but who was also drunk drunk drunk and incredibly 'friendly'. Managed to weasle my way out ... read more

Kat writes: So we decided to hop on a plane in KL and just over 3 hours later we were here to check out Borneo Malaysia. The place of mystery, full of dense jungle bursting with wildlife including the endangered Bornean Orangutan and the Sumatran Rhinoceros (and if you've ever seen the movie 'Anaconda' - man eating snakes!) Well, it’s not quite 'full' of jungle any more - commerce, logging and palm oil plantations are seeing to that but it is still a beautiful and mysterious country. Sabah's capital We landed in Kota Kinabalu, a Malay lad about our age was sitting next to me on the plane, so we shared a cab with him into town and he gave us the quick low down on the area. Sweet. Kota Kinabalu or KK as its affectionally known by the locals is on the west side of sabah, borneo. its the capital and is a city but only small compared to liverpool or sydney. we were there for a week and what a week it has been. we touched down after an immence time in the jungle and were looking forward to a nice week of sunning it on the beach. it was raining and the skies were grey due to fires in indonesia. i was slightly gutted to ... read more

I'm sure there's a great quote for it but I can't find the perfect one yet. Essentially what contributed to more than half of this trip being as enjoyable as it was-hands down, the company. Michael (another international student that lives on my floor) and I caught an evening flight to Kota Kinabalu (KK) on Tuesday. Before my trip I had phoned a friend back home, who'd spent some time in Malaysia, for advice varying from what to do and where to stay. She told me all that I asked and more but what we hadn't predicted became fates way of connecting us to an unforgettable experience. Before we left for our trip we didn't exchange any currency since we planned on withdrawing Ringits (the local currency) at the airport. Upon arrival, we found that the ... read more

O.K Trip has begun. I was so happy to land after my Sep 11th flight. Safe I thought! Had no sleep and I was walking through arrivals where someone jumped on my back! Turned around and there was the wrong un. Only Mr Danial Pollard himself along with his Ting Tong. I knew it was goiung to get messy from this point in. Jumped in a cab and straighyt to Pat Pong. Anyone that knows him knows that he is morally wrong. Just stepped off a plane and now I'm fighting my way through ladyboys in a busy Bangkok bar. It could only happen to me. I wasn't too impressed with the ping pong show by the old hags but opening beer bottles with your fanny is one hell of an achievement in my book! So ... read more

What an amazing place the Malaysian state of Sabah in Borneo is! 2 weeks just wasn't enough to take in the amazing scenery, flora, fauna and marine life. We started off in the capital of Kota Kinabalu and used it as a base to explore South East Asia's highest mountain (coming in at almost 14000 ft), Mount Kinabalu. Unfortunately we didn't have the right equipment with us to make the ascent to the top, so instead we ventured around the national park at the bottom of the mountain. Martin also put his vertigo to the test again, by doing yet another tree top walk. This time it was just a rickety rope bridge suspended 41m above the ground! We spent one evening cruising down the Klias wetlands in search of the illusive big nosed Proboscis monkeys ... read more

So, we've finally managed to find some spare time AND an internet cafe to write up all our exciting adventures so far. I'll start at the beginning, so be prepared for a LOOONG read: We flew in with Malaysia Airlines on a direct flight and arrived in Kuala Lumpur at 2p.m. local time. Extremely tired after the night flight and jet lagged on top of all that we managed to stumble off the aeroplane and onto a train to KL sentral station. After wandering around for a bit we left our luggage there and went into town on the monorail. We arrived in an area well known by us, and started looking for a restaurant we had learned to love on our last visit. Unfortunately it was no where in sight and we ended up looking ... read more
