Another hectic, fun filled day laid ahead. Jane had certainly gone to town on this trip and made sure every day was as manic as the last! The alarm was set once again for another early morning wake up, followed by brekkie at Fook Yeun. With great sadness this was to be our last meal at our favourite (well, cheap!) restaurant. We only had half a day left in KK as we were going to be boarding a flight at 2:50pm for Singapore. We decided to spend the last half day going to the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, a group of 5 islands located between 3 to 8 km off Kota Kinabalu. The park is spread over 4,929 hectares, two thirds of which cover the sea. Before the Ice Age, it formed part of the ... read more

We arranged for Jad (taxi driver) to pick us up from the Nak Hotel at 6.30am for our 8.15am Air Asia flight to Kota Kinabalu. Kota Kinabalu, formerly Jesselton, is the capital of Sabah state in Malaysia. The city is located on the northwest coast of Borneo facing the South China Sea. The Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park lies on one side and Mount Kinabalu, which gave the city its name, is nearby. On arrival at KK we got a taxi to Hotel Eden 54, we had booked this accomodation whilst in England. The hotel was lovely, nice big room and very friendly staff, who let us check in early. After checking in we decided to take a five minute walk to Jessleton harbour and have some lunch. We had lunch at a local coffee shop ... read more

I'll admit that before we booked the tickets to Kota Kinabalu, I really had no idea where Borneo was. I also thought that Borneo was its own country. Well...it turns out that Borneo is an island with a country and parts of two other countries. KK is the capital of Sabah, which is a semi-autonomous state of Malaysia. After pristine, modern Singapore, it was a nice change to spend a few days in gritty, relaxed Kota Kinabalu. Our first welcome to the island was the budget terminal of the KK airport. We stepped off the plane and had to walk across the tarmac for about five minutes before being herded into a building that was essentially a warehouse. We purchased a taxi voucher and got into the most ridiculous cab ever. The entire vehicle was blinged ... read more

After a 2 hr flight we leave Kuala Lumpur and arrive in Kota Kinabulu, Borneo. After three attempts at finding a place to stay and a blood filled tick experience we have booked a week at a nice hotel just out of tuoristville so things are cheaper and more local. The main reason we came to Kota Kinabulu was to do our open water diving course. So we popped into Sabah divers and booked the three day course. Day one was pure theory for 7hrs in classroom environment but we got through it knowing that diving was soon to come unfortunatly liam had come down with a killer head cold, and was told diving with sinus problems could be dangerous so he was told to fill himself with as much cold and flu medicine he could ... read more

Patience is a virtue - or so we are led to believe. Personally I have never been very good at it and after nearly 3 weeks in Borneo I was keen to get started with my work at Sepilok. But I had to wait a little longer. Orang-utans have to be protected from Western viruses, which we might have imported, and that involves us being “quarantined” for at least a week before we start getting in contact with them. Tantalising!! I met up with the other volunteers a week ago - 10 women and one guy; but before anybody is feeling too sorry for or too envious of this one token male I have to add that he’s married to one of the women in the group... We spent a couple of days in KK - ... read more

KOTA KINABALU , MALAYSIA ISLAND OF BORNEO An ideal place to kick back. The hotel has all amenities for a 5 star. Catamaran, sailing, golfing. The people are extremely nice, people stop you on the street to just talk to you and ask how you are doing. Smiling faces everywhere. The plants are identical to Florida. We had a welcoming dance and a musical farewell by hotelstaff, the hotelstaff lined up to the buses and wished us a safe journey and speedy return. Sweet. The local markets were interesting and I traveled privately into the floating villages to dispense some toiletries and t shirts I got at the local market. Very relaxing, Timo would love it. ... read more

Kota Kinabula, Malaysia (Borneo) October 11, 2010 Just what the doctor ordered, - - after multiple plane rides, sightseeing bus rides, a beautiful place to rest, relax and recharge the batteries. We are at the Rasa Ria Shangri-la Resort Hotel. The Conrad in Tokyo was impressive but it is a city hotel, here there is a good size Jacuzzi tub on our balcony, lounge chairs etc. this should give one some idea of quality of the rest of the accommodations. In addition the staff is very friendly and helpful. The hotel is located about ½ hour away from the city in 400 acres of natural and landscaped surroundings part of which is a wildlife reserve for raising orangutans and re-introducing them to the wild. On Sunday the 10th we visited the reserve. I have to say ... read more

Happy Thanksgiving! This is a free day, I believe the only one on the trip. We got up around 7:30 and were greeted by an overcast but cooler day. After the usual excellent breakfast, we dallied in the resort gift shop and made a few purchases. We discussed what we would do today (some others of our party had signed up for various excursions) and Vi decided to book an in-room massage. We returned to our room and did laundry (a most necessary task by this time). Then we put on our swim suits and headed for the pool and frankly spent most of the rest of the day alternatively cooling off in the pool and relaxing in loungers beside it.  At one point I took off to swim in the ocean, where I had a ... read more

Up at 7:30. After breakfast at the hotel, we walk to the Nature Centre on the resort grounds for our group's 9:30 appointment. After an introductory video about the Malaysian rain forest, its endangered species and how this Nature Centre is helping, we followed a narrow, winding path up into the rain forest.  The prolific vegetation is astonishing; verdant and lush, trees and vines intertwined with abundant undergrowth. The humidity actually increases here. There is a constant undulating drone from invisible cicadas. At a viewing station, we met a young orangutan male, one of four orangutans who live in this protected area. We marvel at his incredible ability to negotiate the forest from ground to canopy. Orangutans have a remarkable resemblance to humans in their behavior and physiognomy, even though their body structure is quite different. We then ... read more

Today we leave Japan for Malaysia. Up at 7:30. The routine we're now well used to: repack, breakfast, check out. We walk to the airport and endure baggage check, customs and security. It's been raining all night and it's very humid, and we are soon dripping. On the positive side, we get to bypass the lineup for security because we have our own plane. But it still takes nearly two hours before we're on board. Five hour flight to Kota Kinbalu, Malaysia on the island of Borneo.   Stepping out of the plane in a downpour we are hit by the incredible humidity. We Ottawans are used to humidity but the moisture content of the air here is on a different scale. When we clear customs, we are greeted by beautiful Malaysian girls handing out bead ... read more
