The overnight bus is an hour a late…and that’s the good bit because the Air con is broken, and is freezing cold for the next 6 hours. The driver drove like a maniac - we get about 1 hour sleep between us and arrive in Ipoh at 5.30am….Nothing is open until 10am. Great. For breakfast we find dosa, an upside down coffee and kick-a-poo juice. We leave our packs at the hotel and find a taxi driver. The first and only stop is the Hong San Lok Caves which was a place of worship and exercise. Big buddha’s were in the caves, outside was a tranquil lake with carp and turtles. Women were doing their yoga and tai chi, just the place we needed after our bus ride from hell. In the evening we stumble across ... read more

Day 34: Lumut to Sabak Bernam We woke up early, but it was dark and rainy, and I was tired from staying up to watch the storm, so we went back to sleep. At 10:30, we really got up, packed our stuff and rode our bikes around the corner to a busy breakfast place, named after Nasi Goreng, the national dish. J weighs forty pounds more than me, but wears the same size bike shorts as me (medium). So he carries three of our bags down flights of stairs and I carry one. That sounds right, right? We ate fried chicken, rice, vegetables and roti and drank strong, sweet coffee with condensed milk. The place was bustling with people, locals and tourists, and J’s favorite sport, table tennis, was playing on the Olympics on TV. Teenagers ... read more

Day 33: Taiping to Lumut After a late night of drinking, playing with kids and watching the Olympics, we woke up really late, around 11:30. We quickly checked out of our sheisty hotel and returned to the fun food court from the night before. It was still packed with people, as it had been when we’d left at 2 AM. We enjoyed pork noodle soup, the first pork we’d seen in Malaysia, for breakfast. It was the most splendid Sunday, and we departed around 1, reluctant to leave this gorgeous area. Families were playing and picnicking by the lake in the park. But the day was so lovely, it was also a perfect day for biking, despite intense heat and humidity. It was one of those days that make you thrilled to be alive, really. We ... read more

Day 32: Burkit Merah to Taiping We began the day biking along the highway but after only fifteen miles spotted a sign for the zoo. The zoo!!! I wonder what animals would be at a zoo in Malaysia? J wondered too. So we detoured, and rode ten miles off in another direction to the zoo. It was fabulous! We got the ticket agents to hold our bags in their little ticket booth, and locked up our bikes in the parking lot. We saw giant Malay cats, civets, lizards, barking deer, crocodiles, monkeys, rhinos, giraffe, zebra and elephants. We enjoyed seeing the reindeer get fed, watching the zebras and the bulls break bread together and seeing the mama and the baby elephant cuddle. The monkeys and chimps were unfortunately depressed, but I think thats common for monkeys ... read more

Day 31: Georgetown to Bukit Merah The day came when it was finally time to leave the delightful Georgetown. So we set our alarm for 7 to get an early start. But we didn’t actually get up until 9:30, and we didn’t depart until 11. As we were on an island, we had to first bike across a four mile bridge to reach the mainland. The bridge had no shoulder and the traffic was intense. Guys working construction on the median of the bridge kept waving to us, but if we moved our hands from our handlebars to wave back, we risked crashing in to vehicles or going over the guard rail in to the ocean. So we kept our four hands affixed to our handlebars, inhaling exhaust fumes, for four miles, terrified to look away ... read more

Large trees with foot-long broad leaves and box-shaped fruits stretch almost parallel to the sand out towards the sparkling sea, providing a natural canopy under which to escape the heat or the rain. Under the trunk of one is a triangular mosquito net (mine) with sand piled on its sides and attached to wooden sticks in the corners to keep out vermin and mosquitos. Draped width-wise and covering half of it as well as the trusty pack is a dark blue rain poncho. It provides shelter from rainstorms if I crouch in the middle of the makeshift "tent" and fold up my mat and sheet under me. Also under its generous canopy are two glass bottles containing kerosene at various degrees of fullness. And to complete the picture -- in addition to my sheet airing and ... read more

The mainland of Malaysia receded in the backwash of the ferry as we settled in for the 30-minute ride. This would be peanuts compared to the 4 hours bus ride we had just completed from Cameron Highlands to the pier at Lumut. Our destination was Pangkor Island (Pulau Pangkor) - a small, green enclave off Malaysia's west coast. The concrete dock led to a reception room which, in turn, led outside to the parking lot. And in the parking lot was a most unexpected sight: a fleet of pink (yes, pink) mini-buses turned taxis. The driver quoted a fare for the 10-minute drive that was equal to the fare for the 30-minute boat ride and we had no choice but to pay. There was no bargaining with the Pink Posse. Th first night we spent in ... read more

We have made it to Malaysia after a somewhat gruelling 12 hour journey from Railay Beach (pronounced in a long rolling, strangely Jamaican sounding accent) to Georgetown, in Penang; not nearly as long a journey as the travel time would indicate! Thai minibus transits are maybe not as efficient as you would hope. We started to notice that things were changing as we got towards the border. Suddenly you start to see women in head scarves and adverts for Halal food giving away the fact that you are heading towards a muslim country. At the same time we were desparately trying to spend our final Thai Baht. Our mini bus stopped for 10 minutes for lunch, which I hoped would be enough time for me to navigate the food counter. I find food counters confusing enough ... read more

I arrived at the train station just in time for departure. They changed the platform very last minute with a mumbling announcement one cannot quite make out what it's about. I asked the conductor and was able to get on the right train. I always have the fear of getting on the wrong train and find out hours later that I'm in a place far far away from where I want to be. The late night trip was slightly draining. The train moved in complete pitch darkness. I couldn't make out what we have pass by. Every once awhile, we came across shimmering lights as signs that we were pulling into another station. Traveling late at night seem to be a Malaysian standard. I'll be boarding another midnight train to my next destination tomorrow. I am ... read more
