Our first week in Penang was full of, well, firsts. Phil went to work on Monday and was introduced to the team he would be working with. On Tuesday Carole took us on a tour around the main areas of the island. We visited the local wet market, she showed us the nearest hospital and other medical offices, then we went up to Penang hill. There is a lot to do and see in that area. We then went down into Georgetown and had lunch at the newest mall, Gurney Plaza. It’s by far the nicest, newest building I had seen in Penang. That area of Georgetown is where most expats live because most of them have kids and it’s near the international schools, and so it has more western-oriented shops and restaurants. Carole then drove ... read more

Our first weekend in Penang. Carole (our relo person) dropped us off at our apartment and made sure that we were ok with it. The pictures on the apartment website made it look pretty nice, so we were suspicious as to whether it really would be that nice. It was! At about 1000 sq. ft. it's more than plenty of space, has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The main living area is nice and open with a little balcony and a great view of the strait and bridge between the island and mainland. After a little settling in Phil called his friend Sook Chin to have her meet us for dinner. She came to the US from Penang earlier this year for training and got to experience Oregon camping with our friends for Memorial day. And ... read more

We arrived here the day before yesterday after at least 20 hrs of travelling, it was a long one and once we arrived we were ready to sleep forever. So we have been having a good few lie ins. Malaysia is so different to anywhere else, there are so many different cultures and religions here. Its unbelivable how much can change in so little space. It feels good to leave Thailand as we felt we had done enough there. We managed to find the lovliest little guesthouse ( Its called stardust, if anyone reading this is coming this way) the man that runs it is so helpful and friendly. It feels more like we are staying at someones house than in a guesthouse. We found the nearest shoppign mall and its very westernised we had a ... read more

Lisa has classes some of the days, so I ventured out on my own. I visited a butterfly farm and then a spice garden. On the way I met a very nice couple from Holland. I had to take a bus about 1hr and a half away to get there! On the way back, I stopped in a little village to have lunch. It can be very difficult to order when there isn't a menu. I ended up stopping at an Indian restaurant and having roti, ( a type of pancake) and some cold curried chicken. It wasn't bad considering it was only a buck! ... read more

The journey from KL To Penang was another to remember- and so far the worst! About half an hour into the journey we realised we were being watched by an army of cockroaches who had nested in the cushioning by our seats. We thought it was bad enough them running along the floor and up the walls, but when one fell onto Laura's head we soon realised there was no getting away from them. We spent the rest of the journey dodging the cockroaches and keeping watch of each other incase anymore decided to jump on us. Five hours later we crossed the bridge from the mainland into Penang Island, and were extremely glad to get off the bus. We headed to a hostel in Georgetown recommended by the Lonely Planet as being 'clean and spacious', ... read more

Yes you have read correctly we are no longer taking the world by storm together. Myself and Jaya have parted ways with Manjit. Jaya and I are travelling to Cambodia to work in an orphanage and Manjit is continuing her journey with her dad before heading of to India on the 9th of July. Im not quite sure if you have heard this title before but it is what we have named ourselves after our many mishaps which seemed to cause the locals much amusement, you could often hear one of us commenting 'the los tres plumos strike again.' Although we have gone our own ways by no means are our travels over. Thats all from me for now. ... read more

From Singapore it was a bus trip into Malaysia and up to Melaka where we stayed in the most chilled out guest house run my Gabi a Swiss/German hippy woman and her Chinese Rastafarian husband who played reggae music for most of the day. This super chilled out vibe was only interrupted when the mosque situated across the street (and opposite my bedroom window) blasted out the call for prayer at 6am ! So, after they pulled me off the bedroom ceiling I decided it was time to go. One other amazing memory of Melaka was while sat in the local Indian restaurant a huge swarm of flying ants attracted by the florescent lights came into the restaurant and then got by the ceiling fans that were going full blast due to the very hot and ... read more

On Saturday we took the bus out to the town of Air Itam, where we marvelled at the magnificent Kek Lok Si temple with it's famous Ban Po ("million Bhuddas Precious Pagoda"). We were also particularly delighted to find a turtle pond (although, yep, you've guessed it, there was a 'floater'). In the afternoon we took the 30 minute Fenicular railway ride up to the top of Bukit Bandera ("Penang Hill") an 821m Colonial Hill Station and a very welcome 5 degrees cooler than the city. Lunch on the garden terrace of the Bellevue hotel was somewhat spoiled by the appearance of a green PIT VIPER in the vines above our table...oh yes, wait 'til we develop the photos! Up on the hill we also saw wild Resus Monkeys, strangely striped squirrels, a red lizard and ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Penang » Batu Ferringhi March 4th 2005

We took a bus from Georgetown to the north coast resort of Batu Ferringhi ("Foreigner's rock") which has a nice beach but the water is no good for swimming. Things were very quiet and we spent the morning on an almost deserted beach. This is the first (and only) beach we are visiting that was hit by last year's devastating Tsunami. We could not tell whether the silence was due to the the fact that tourists are staying away or whether it's just a quiet time of year but the place was still a bit eerie. We could not see many of the beach-front cafes or bungalows indicated our 'Rough Guide' (but admittedly, we did not search for very long). We returned to Georgetown that afternoon.... read more
