October 24th - November 1st Yay, Phil's parents came to visit this weekend! Our first official visitors. The week went by as usual, though we were thrilled to finally receive Phil’s replacement debit card on Friday (thank you again Mark!!!!). His parents arrived Friday evening and we took them straight to one of our favorite local restaurants, Roo’s Cellar. It is a wine bar that that serves good food and has an upstairs bar and an incredibly wine selection considering where we are. We had some late dinner snacks and a nice bottle of wine. Back at home we were lulled to sleep by what Phil’s dad described as “firecracker junkies.” I should explain. The ninth month of the Islamic calendar is Ramadan, a month of fasting that happens to fall in October this year. Muslims ... read more

After such a crazy weekend in KL we decided to treat ourselves to a nice dinner on Monday. It was a restaurant I had heard of but never been to, so it was an adventure finding it and luckily it was open. Dinner here starts late so when we walked in at 6 we weren’t sure if it was open or not; we were the only people there besides the wait staff. They seated us and we had a really great dinner. After we went to Gurney, my favorite shopping place, and got some more dvds and more fixin’s for fajitas. Since the ingredients were available, and Mexican food doesn’t exist here, Phil thought it would be nice to throw a Mexican dinner at our place for some of his coworkers. Our very own ‘Thursday night ... read more

Hey Everyone, Checked out of the traveller's lodge this morning and had a hearty breakfast in the cafe next door, we ate so quickly the lady was shocked she called us the fast workers (some things never change). Checked in to Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion which was only round the corner. It is so amazing the building is so old and our room is huge well after hostel rooms. We had a tour round the town on a Trishaw this morning which was a nice way to see everything. We stopped off a couple of times to go into places like the Fort Cornwallis and the Fishermans Village, I think the guy pedaling needed a break too. Got on a bus to head over to Batu Ferringhi which is one of the main beach resorts on ... read more

Hi ya, Overslept this morning but managed to pack in a lot today. We have walked around China town and looked at all the market stalls havent really bought much but its really interesting looking round. We had lunch in a Chinese which was delish big prawns with lovely fresh veg, chicken and rice. We then caught a bus to Penang Hill where we caught a train up to the top it takes half an hour in total We saw loads of monkeys as we were going up. There are temples at the to of the hill which are beautiful so ornate. The next on our agenda was the Kek Lok Si Temple which is absolutely huge there are massive Gold buddahs everywhere and again the architecture is really ornate. Got a taxi back to our ... read more

Hi Guys, We've had our two days in Melaka which were ok but not what we expected, had 2 nice evenings there but other than that it was very quiet or pouring with rain. We set of to Penang this morning and had the worst journey, the first coach set of late then they kept on putting us on to other coaches it took us 10 hrs to get here. Nat got angry and had a go at the bus company but they "didnt speak very good english" so we didnt really get anywhere. Have managed to get a place in 75 Travellers Lodge which is very friendly with nice clean rooms with air con (a must). Feeling very tired now from all the travelling but content as we have just had a delicious indian meal ... read more

***Pictures are up, YAY!!*** Welcome! Our third week started out with our first Bahasa Malaysia language lesson. As part of the relocation package we were given the option of having language lessons, so we said yes. Roger is our teacher. He teaches at a local school and also does private lessons. Monday night he came over to our apartment and we started learning the basics: good morning, good night, reading road signs and some food words. We also got some interesting insight on the culture of Penang and Malaysia, mostly on the government and which Phil joined the badminton team at work. Most of us in the US think of badminton as a fun picnic game but it is taken very seriously over here. Pro competitions are shown on tv all the time. The group plays ... read more

The trip from the Perhentian Islands to Georgetown meant crossing Malaysia from east to west. Although it is not as far as the country’s expansion from north to south, it is said to be long and rather tedious, because there is no direct road. There is a direct bus, though, from Kota Bharu to Butterworth, the mainland city closest to Georgetown on Penang Island, at 9:30 a.m. As the morning boat was supposed top leave the island at 8 a.m., we should easily catch this buys; but the boat was late (rather unusual for Malaysia) and the shared taxi did not manage to take us to the bus terminal on time. There was either a night bus or a bus next morning to Butterworth but we were determined to reach Georgetown the same day and were ... read more

Our second week here in Penang was much less exciting than the first. Phil caught a little cold from work that turned into a sinus infection, and then he passed it on to me. We were both feeling pretty crappy though we did manage to get out and do some things. That week we had dinner at a new sushi restaurant. Bad idea! Eating is Penang’s biggest pastime. People easily eat 6-7 small meals a day, sometimes very late at night, so any new restaurant is instantly popular and busy. And there was a promotion going on the night we went so there were even more people. It didn’t look that busy and the hostess said the wait would be 10-15 minutes. Ok, I can wait that long for sushi. As we were waiting more and ... read more
