Wednesday 16th August Paul - So got up again and went for breakfast. Made a plan of getting some drinks and food and trekking into the jungle for the day. The canopy walkway is suspended 30 metres above the ground so gets you right into the thick of the action so we were all looking forward to doing this. Got lots of 100Plus (basically Lucozade) and set off. As soon as we had walked for 5 minutes we couldn't see more than 10 metres either side of us! The jungle was so dense. All huge green leaves, swaying vines, enormous trees... it was an amazing sight and cool to think that we are in the oldest rainforest in the world. Walked for about 20 minutes, occasionally hearing the rustle of leaves around us and hoping it ... read more

Day one: 10 August: Thursday Ingo and Conny picked me up from outside the Puncak Inn and we drove down to the Gap where we birded for an hour or so, netting me seven new species. Then we headed for Taman Negara. We were going to just drive all the way there but a wrong turn at Jerantut saw us ending up at the ferry terminal at Kuala Tembeling instead. In terms of wildlife the boat trip is very poor (mainly Pacific swallows and water monitors), but for sheer style there's no better way of entering a national park. It may cost a bit more (but not much) and take a bit longer than the bus but it beats it hands down. The boat is a long low-sided affair with wooden plank seating, like a big ... read more

Well, I made it to Malaysia, not that it's difficult to jump on a 30p public bus from Singapore! Caught a coach 2hours north up to Malaka, a little stop-over to break up the journey to Kuala Lumpur (KL to its friends). Malaka is quite a lively little place, full of Singaporean, Chinese and Indian tourists taking the heat off us travellers, (yes, I do view myself as a cut above the 'standard' tourist), however saying that, you don't get half as much hassle here as in Indo - thankfully! It's been hard to enjoy the lively Sat night street markets, line dancing (!) and kareokee because my ear is still killing me and I'm necking paracetamol like they're Smints, but at least I can get my teeth to meet meaning I can chew now so ... read more

Selamat datang! After much debate about our next move, we left KL having decided to squeeze in the Cameron Highlands (home of some high quality tea) and the jungles of Teman Negara National Park before heading to more beaches. CH was our first stop and the gorgeous mountain views and tea fields made the trip worthwhile. We stayed at a really nice hostel (called Father's Guesthouse) where we actually saw other backpackers! This has hardly been the case since we've been here, so it was nice to stay in a more social setting. We had a pretty chill day - we did one of the shorter jungle treks from town, then caught a ride in the back of a truck with a bunch of young school children up to one of the tea plantations for a ... read more

Hellooo, we are kind of swimming away at the moment so it's perfect timing to update our blog.....we've already attempted updating our blog again once but it is getting to be a bit of a chore.....anyway we're stuck in the hotel at the moment while god flushes the toilet. Ok, here goes...After the Cameron highlands we headed south to Kuala Lumpur...we stopped in the china town part that had a really good market....original copy Rolex's for only 'cheap cheap'...we went to see the twin towers and we were lucky enough to get tickets to go up to the sky bridge. Like every big city K.L. has got a shopping centre which was perfectly airconditioned and was where we seemed to spend most of our time, we even had a few trips to the cinema. The bus ... read more

Hey All, So we've been really busy the last week or so. Taman Negara is a national park that's like 4000 square km of jungle. There's all kind of wild animals there like elephants and tigers. We didn't see any of them though cause you have to do over night treks and stay in these places called hides which are basically like caves with beds and rats and insects all over the place and even after all that horrible stuff you only might see some animals. So I was like no way!! To get there we took one of those longboats through the middle of the jungle for 3 hours. It was pretty cool cause we saw water buffalo and stuff but by the end of it our asses were broken!!! We ended up staying in ... read more

*Round 1* The first round was a long drawn out affair, we both looked a little worse for wear after enduring a long bus ride from the Cameron Highlands to one of the oldest jungles in the world, The Taman Negara National park, over 130 million years old and home to animals like Elephants, Tigers, Tapir etc. We had looked at ways to get from the Highlands to the park, including a trip on the very scenic jungle railway but we decided to take a transfer from our accomodation instead which cost us Rm85 each, quite expensive but a lot easier than using public transport. Sometimes you have to take the easy route. As we were in the guesthouse we met a Welsh couple that we befriended, called Mark and Carys, we were with these for ... read more

It's been awhile. We've been to the jungle and back. For those of you without an encyclopedia, allow me to enthrall you. Taman Negara is a 130 million year old jungle in central peninsular malaysia. Among it's dazzling features are the Orang Asli native jungle dwellers. Their name roughly translates as "Africans Lost in Asia." Indeed that is what they are. In all fairness it was neat to see their little village on the banks of whatever river we were on. They started a fire for us without matches, lighter fluid, a lighter, indeed without even lighting up an entire phonebook (Mom). They also did their requisite demonstration with the blow gun. The guy was mighty accurate. They even had a jug of their paralysing poison stuff on hand. It was securely stopped up with some ... read more

After leaving work at the end of March, and before setting off on my travels, I decided to see some of Malaysia that I hadn't seen in my 3 years here So Ed and I set off on a road trip .... 1st stop Taman Negara The rainforest is millions of years old, and we spent a few hot, sweaty days walking in the jungle, fighting off leaches, and trying not to bump into too much woldlife! Went on a wet boat trip up the river, ate good food in the floating restaurants, and swam in the hotel's small pool Got up early on the first morning to walk while the heat wasn't so bad, and before most people set off.. climbed Bukit Terasik and watched the morning mist rise through the valley (wish we'd stuck ... read more

Hi everyone! This is gonna be a bit of a long one, cos we never managed to drag ourselves off the beach to a computer until we got to KL! We didnt actually do nothing though - we spent the last week exploring the beaches and caves in Krabi on the West Coast of southern Thailand, as well as taking a boat trip round the surrounding islands and doing a lot of snorkelling around the coral reefs and seeing some really cool tropical fish and brightly coloured coral, not to mention jellyfish and giant clams!!! Having eventually dragged ourselves away from the beach - we made it to Kuala Lumpur, capital of Malaysia for the start of our last tour around Malaysia, taking in the rainforest, highlands, islands and beaches (of course)! KL is quite a ... read more
