Hopped in a minivan for the ride from the Cameron Highlands to Taman Negara. However, to keep things interesting, the connecting bus broke down and we got to spend a couple of hours in nowhere Malayasia waiting for the repair. However, mysteriously the same thing happened to the group following ours the next day, so I think it is merely a means of explaining away a two hour wait. A group of us came down from the Cameron Highlands together, and found beds on the second try. However, we are quite lucky as spring break has begun so everybody is going on vacation. I have heard a number of horror stories of people unable to find rooms. One person is even camping outside a chalet in the owners' son's tent, because she couldn't find a room ... read more

Water level ran nearly six feet higher the day I traveled up river towards Taman Negara National Park. After a brisk three hour bus ride from Kuala Lumpur, I quickly realized that the Jungles of Malaysia was not the type of place that would have ATM machines on every corner and I’d literally be up shit’s creek without a paddle. Before boarding a glorified canoe with a canopy and a motor, the local booking agent was able to coerce the chef of bus station to give Royal and I a thirty minute ride into town to acquire some cash for the trip. Ringgits in hand, I began what is normally a two hour ride upriver but took nearly three and a half due to the speed of the current downstream. After waking from my nap aboard ... read more

Hey all, well a fast update on the situation here, after 3 weeks I'm still in Malaysia. After my short visit to Penang which I didn't like (didn't give it time either as I knew I had to go back to KL to meet Amanda and Chris (Swedish Dude) to go to Tamana Negara) I traveled to KL were I also met Dylan, another Canadian, who wanted to join us to Tamana Negara. Better to be with 4 as if you want to do a 4 day hike, you need a guide so cheaper if you go with 4....anyway, 2 days later arrived in TN and had a hostel with view on the river, a hamac etc... we took first a chill day were we sorted out all the permits, tents, food etc. The 4 days ... read more

I arrived in Kuala Tahan, Taman Negara, on Dec 13. It's wet season here, so the wheather promised to be less than reliable, but the first few days were actually excellent. While in the dry season the place must be packed with tourists, there were hardly any of them around now, giving the village a rather local athmosphere. My first little jungle adventure was the canopy walk, elevated up to 40 meters above the ground, a must-do out here. That night I met a swedish-english group of travellers, whom I joined on a 2-day hiking trip to one of the hides deep into the jungle, where you are supposed to be able to spot some amazing wildlife. The trail was about 13 km long, but that is jungle km, which means steep hills, fallen trees, wide ... read more

Russell - So we arrive in Taman Nagara to experience what nature has to offer. This is the oldest rainforest in the world having not changed significantly for an estimated 130 million years. I have tried to comprehend just how long that is but the best my brain can come up with is "That's very old!" which doesn't quite cover it. This landscape would have been familiar to the dinosaurs! We started with a quick trek to the canopy walkway which is suspended in the jungle 25 meters in the air, going through the tops of the trees. It was an absolutely amazing experience, if a little scary as the walkway was actually constructed from aluminium ladders with a plank on them. The jungle is so dense you can't actually see very far apart from a ... read more

Hey everybody, sorry I kept you waiting, but due to circumstances beyond my control I was unable to upload any pictures until now. I am currently in Taman Negara, the big Malaysian national park (details on the next blog) to update you on what I have been up to in the past 10 days. I stayed in Kuala Lumpur for 3 days, sharing a room in Chinatown and spending most of my time with a Brit. What struck me most about the city is how civilized the traffic was compared to Bangkok: it was actually moving ! in lanes !! with hardly any honking horns !!! Apart from loads of roaming KL's streets we went to visit the giant Bathu caves with implanted Hindu shrine and religious artwork, just north of town, went up the skytower ... read more

OK so we are 32 days in (yes it really has been that long since the tearful goodbye at Heathrow) and this is what these trips are made for (or at least that is what Andrew thinks). After another early start we set about for Taman Negara. Older than the Amazon (135 million years old - almost as old as your parents) its awesome - the stuff of legends. Despite wet season it was a packed bus. To get to the Jungle we took a long tail boat which was incredible. Literally sitting on the river, a very nice shade of brown, we headed upstream for 3 hours to Kuala Tahan. Despite wet feet (the boat leaked) and extremely sore arses the views were incredible and it really felt like we were off on a proper ... read more

We drove out to Taman Negara in Landrovers with Francis & Kumar. On route we stopped at the tea plantation to have a look at the terraces & learn about the different grades of tea that are produced, it would appear that the quality of tea is inversely proportional to the amount of milk you have to add. We made a note of the flowering orange pekoe (the highest grade) for later. After looking down through the clouds over the national park from the mountain lookout we walked through the mossy forest learing about the medicinal & narcotic uses of the various plants that grow there. Kumar knew the common & latin names of all the plants that we passed & the exact quantities to take to poison or cure. Having precariously trudged through the forest, ... read more

We left the relaxing Cherating and set off for the jungle! Taman Negara is over 130 million years old and covers 4343sq km! On our first day we went on a jungle treck (hard work but well worth it!). the trek lead us to the Canopy Walk, a series of 10 rope bridges hanging approx 50 feet above the jungle, a bit scary to look down at times and they moved as much as the Shakey Bridge (when it moved!) but well worth doing! After that we travelled on a wooden boat down the river to visit an Orang Asli tribe who live in the jungle, where we learned about how they live and learned how to shoot poison darts through a blowpipe! The only places to eat in Taman Negara are floating restaurants, you get ... read more

Some people travel solely to experience the great rail journeys of the world - the Orient Express, the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Jungle Express. The Jungle Express for me turned out to be a 4 hour leg of the Singapore to Thai border train, on a local train. Hot sweaty, confined, slow, but with exotic scenery from every window, we made progress snail like towards the Taman Negara National Park, stopping at every reed shack in the jungle (or so it seemed). The Taman Negara National Park pulsates deep in the heart of the Malaysian Peninsula, more land life than any place I've seen. The park is home to tigers (100 est), Rhinos and Elephants (400 est), unfortunately these larger animals are wary of human contact (justifiably given our record of hunting species to extinction) - ... read more
