We were desperate to get to Tanah Rata, located at 1500m altitude in the Cameron Highlands, to escape the draining tropical heat of the lowlands cities. We stepped off the bus into a cool breeze and some English drizzle and pretty much broke into spontaneous grins. After a few days, it became apparent that the pleasant climate was just the icing on the cake for this beautiful corner of the world - it may just be my favorite place of the trip so far. The highlight of our visit was a morning minibus tour which whipped us round some of the region's premier attractions. This included one each of one of the area's numerous strawberry farms, honey bee farms and beautiful tea plantations (with delicious fresh tea that even I could enjoy). Two stops on the ... read more

We left early from Georgetown, catching the free ferry to the mainland to catch our bus from Butterworth. We were lucky enough to see a pretty FIT sunrise as we crossed the waters! There was a slight wait untill our bus left so me + Muc filled up on some lovely "grotty roti" for breakfast. and let caz look after the bags for short while. The little Indian diner had possibly some of the worst hygine conditions ever and i dair say the British Health & Hygene office would have a field day! We braved it and battled on through even if it did look like a certain stain on a certain piece of cloth.................... Catching the bus, however the suspension was kind of hanging of so we went thru some pretty hard times. We stopped ... read more

Finally, it is time! I can leave Malaysia today and go back to Thailand where I can eat some solid food and not curry. The trip to Thaialnd is expected to take approximately 8 hours. The reality is that we are sutck in a tiny, tinny van for 10 hours. The missing 2 hours are due to the van NOT being full and the driver driving around, and around and around and around trying to fill his van. At one point I drfted off and awoke...in the same bloody town as the driver was still trying to fill the van. On the plus side I did manage to get a few chapters of the Bourne Supremacy under my belt. Anyway, upon arrival in Krabi we have no accomodation and ask the driver to drop us off ... read more

Hey everyone! I hear that you have recieved some snow at home of which I am jealous. I find that you have to move away from Canada to really appreciate the seasons that we have at home. Just to keep you updated on what is currently going on, I am as of 3 days ago traveling solo. Amy wasnt enjoying Malaysia so flew to Perth early. I was worried about what I was going to do for a bit, but everything sorted itself out and I am having the greatest time. I am traveling with two guys from England (they're brothers) and two other girls. On Saturday I will be going to Thailand with the guys to stay there for about a week and a half. We're going to Kho Phi Phi for some beach laying ... read more

I got a minibus the next day to the Cameron Highlands: The land of tea plantations and rolling hills. We were dropped off at a shabby looking hostel, where no-one wanted to stay. Consulting the bible we decided on Father's Guest Lodge, but the driver would not take us there. It seems Daniel's Lodge the shabby hostel was intent on trying to monopolise the backpacker accommodation and Father's was the only other accommodation in its way. After much argument, we gave up and decided to walk ourselves. It was only five minutes away. Father's was actually lovely, the dorms were set in WW2 Corrugated Iron style bunkers and there was a huge TV/restaurant area complete with sofas. At such altitude the temperature had dropped and so me and the two British girls I was sharing a ... read more

Had the best day today of the trip so far. We're in the Cameron Highlands, high up in the mountains. We visited the tea plantations here today, which are spectacular. I cant describe how beautiful they are. Just picture lots of rolling, green mountains as far as you can see. Photos cant do it justice. After going round the plantation we then sat down with great views and had a nice cup of their tea. We then visited a little village of tribes people and played with the little children and gave them biscuits. They live in little huts on stilts on the edges of the mountains, so basic. Yet they were all so friendly and happy. We were then taught how to shoot bore etc with their darts (i'm v good at this!) and one ... read more

So i think the last time I wrote anything on my blog was in Cambodia. So this is what's gone down since then. After a 4 hour ride in the back of a pick up and another 4 hours in a bus we landed in the busy city of Bangkok. Bangkok has been the most westernized city I've been to in the last 4 weeks with all the stuff a traveler could ask for. So in Bangkok I went to see 2 things the Palace and the Temple of dawn, this is all I had time for (I'll probably come back here, that's how much I liked it). The next stop was on the island of Koh Pan Gnag where I spent the next 3 days lying on a beach...and the best part is...no sun burn! ... read more

I cannot really think of a worse journey to do with a hangover (other than maybe the road from the border of Cambodia to Siem Reap discussed earlier) than the journey to the Cameron Highlands. Being located in the mountains meant the roads meandered and my head was repeatedly banged against the window of the bus for a good 3 hours. Still, upon arriving, the lush rolling hills and cool air were a nice contrast to the past few weeks, and the accommodation at 'Fathers Guest house' was nice, clean and wildlife free, very welcomed. Having booked ourselves on the half day tour with what seemed like everybody else at the guest house we set off for the tea plantations. We had a great tour guide who took us on a trek through the jungle and ... read more

To break the coach journey up between the Perhentian Islands and KL we stopped off on route at the Cameron Highlands. One of the reasons for this is that it's a lot cooler there. The accommodation there was a little over budget (approx $20) a night between us, however, it was an apartment and as we walked in we actually thought that it was someone's home. So it was nice just to relax in the evening and watch a couple of films. we also did a little hike. There are several routes to take, and we were recommended route 9a which is a gentle jaunt through a mini rain forest, which takes about an hour. That was fine, quite scenic and had a little waterfall etc. At the end however, we had to get back ... read more
