Not Just An Environmental Organization, REACH Reaches Out To Orang Asli (OA) Children Cameron Highlands, Malaysia - With the elevation of just over 2400 meters, Cameron Highlands, situated in Titiwangsa Mainrange, is a getaway place for a lot of locals and tourists alike who just wants to leave the smoldering city life of Kuala Lumpur and have a breath of fresh air. The surrounding green tree –filled mountains that cover much of Cameron Highlands district is a stark contrast to what it was once before when growing tourism and development in the area almost threatened its beautiful landscape. It’s a place to hike where a variety of hiking trails can lead you to mountain forest or pass by acres and acres of tea plantations and strawberry fields. It’s still a great tourist destination in Malaysia but ... read more

CAMERON HIGHLANDS, KEA FARM, TEA PLANTATION, TIME TUNNEL MUSEUM, & WATERFALLS - TANAH RATA, CAMERON HIGHLANDS, PAHANG, MALAYSIA. Monday 27 February 2010 - . Having not gone to sleep until after 2.00 am because the water heating pipes pass through our room and were clanking and gurgling away for ages, we were woken at 6.00 am by the call to prayer from the local mosque which sounds like it is just beneath our window. At least it meant that we were up and about at a reasonable hour to start our day in the Cameron Highlands! Located in the state of Pahang, Cameron Highlands is Malaysia's largest hill station. Standing at an elevation of 1524 metres above sea level. It has a consistently cool climate that never ranges beyond 20 degrees celsius. It was first discovered ... read more

Six days of duty free beer and evenings in Sunba in Langkawi had taken its toll and it felt like a great opportunity to head off to the Cameron Highlands, in the centre of Peninsular Malaysia. Having been cleared of dense jungle in the early 1900s to make way for tea plantations and since cleansed of communist rebels by the British Army in the 50s the area has become a top tourist attraction for hikers from Malaysia and afar. The climate is far cooler than the lowlands and whilst sitting drinking tea in the town of Tanah Rata it has the feel of a European ski resort, minus the snow. The buildings, mostly hotels are several storeys tall in close proximity to one another, nestled in a valley where people walk by in hiking boots, waterproofs ... read more

After stuffing our faces with noodles for breakfast we hopped aboard a bus from Kuala Lumpur to the Cameron Highlands. We were welcomed by heavy rain, which was a nice change to the hot and sticky temperatures we had had elsewhere in South East Asia. Having arrived fairly late there was little we could do but eat and get to bed ready for the next day. The following day we had a lazy morning, then set out to find the tourist information centre to get a map of the many jungle trails that are around the Cameron Highlands. We had originally planned to walk to Sam Poh Temple (buddist), however the information on the map said it was a three hour walk and thinking we would not be able to get to there and back before ... read more

Malaysia – The Cameron Highlands – An extreme never ending jungle trek and a new addition to the family travelling group for a couple of days. I’m sure you’ve all been eager to read the next blog after I left you in suspense from the previous blog, yeah right! Well as you can see from the photos the bus was thankfully a VIP bus and Dad is still talking to me. I’m sure if he’s being honest I think it’s fair to say he actually found it quite comfortable and seemed to be able to sleep for most of the journey, result! After reassuring my parents that there would be no need to book accommodation in advance and that it would simply be a case of just turn up and find something, I was a little ... read more

N.B. Sadly we’ve lost most of the pictures we had taken in the Highlands. They were rather good if we do say so ourselves. Hopefully we’ll be able to recover them from our hard drive later. In the meantime, please enjoy those that we were able to save... I can believe that upon arriving in the Cameron Highlands for the first time many people would experience the typical “we’re not in Kansas anymore Toto” feeling of surprise that comes with being geographically in the middle of mainland Malaysia, in a region whose name is depictive of Scottish hillsides and is in appearance reminiscent of Switzerland with regard to the Chalet style buildings. Furthermore, the Highlands are in no way lacking colonial charm, not surprising as they reached popularity many years ago with British expatriates escaping the ... read more

These were the first words we heard as we stepped off the coach at Taman Negara. We left you last dashing off to the "City Tour" of Kuala Lumpur, lead by one of the hostel receptionists (Elliott). What an interesting and entertaining experience this was. To give you an idea of what Elliott is like, his dream is to perform 'One Moment in Time' in front of Simon Cowell on X-Factor (his face was a picture of pure distress when we informed him Simon was no longer on the UK X-Factor). He also carried around a small spray water bottle (we assumed it was either alcohol or for keeping cool) which he used to spray the ground to feed the 'tiny tiny animals', including a lucky very flat and very dead rat. He took us to ... read more
