Our Thailand visa was coming to an end so we needed to travel South into Malaysia. We chose the Cameron Highlands as a complete change to beach locations. We booked a bus down to Ipoh, with the intention of getting an onward but up to the highlands. The agent told us it would be a Malaysian bus and from past experience we knew they are highly air conditioned. So with all our warmest clothes on we turned up for the bus at 9am. It wasn’t a Malaysian bus at all , it was Thai with virtually no air con. Lie number one! As we travelled South the temperature gradually rose and we began to melt. At the border we had to hump our luggage off and carry it over in order for it to be x ... read more

Il y ... read more

The Rafflesia is the largest flower in the world. It can grow up to one metre in diameter & weigh up to 10 kg in weight! There are several species of Rafflesia and they are only found in a few places in SE Asia. And it is becoming more rare, as the rainforests they best grow in, are being diminished by logging & clearing. The first Western botanist to discover the Rafflesia was a Frenchman in Java in the late 1700's. But his illustrations & notes were seized by the British & were not rediscovered until 1954. Meanwhile in 1818, a British botanist collected another species in Sumatra and named the flower in honour of the very notable Sir Stamford Raffles, modern founder of Singapore. Also commonly know as the 'corpse flower' because of its stench ... read more

Santa mustn't have got the memo that we cancelled Christmas and we all woke to goodies by our beds then quickly headed downstairs to the van to take us to the Cameron Highlands for the day (2-3hrs). We stopped on the way for breakfast. Dunkin Donuts for most of us but Wayne chose a soup and giant chunk of meat. Our first stop once in the highlands was a waterfall which was obviously a popular swimming hole for the local kids and our guide bought us all some banana fritters. Then we visited an Oran Asli family who showed us their tiny house made from bamboo. 'Michael' showed us some target practice using a blow pipe and much to everyone's shock and surprise Wayne agreed to have a go and nailed it first go (the local ... read more

Ich bin ja ... read more

We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open. — Jawaharal Nehru Cameron Highlandshas always been a romantic place for me. Chilly with temperature less than 25’C during the day and as low as 12’C during the night, I could picture myself spending a month up here doing nothing but drinking hot black tea the whole day with a book and my Mac to keep me company. The ride up to Cameron Highlands from Kuala Lumpur took about 4 hours. Instead of taking the route from Tapah, my parents and I drove all the way up North and exited the expressway at Simpang Pulai to Cameron Highlands because road condition were better ... read more

Cameron Highlands for those of you who don't know is famous for tea plantation's in Malaysia. The tea leaves are picked here and sent to Kuala Lumpur for flavouring. The first sign for Cameron Higlands Rachel was dreaming of tea and the different flavours she could have. Paul on the other hand had heard of the high quality Indian food and was dreaming of an authentic Indian dish! You would be glad to know both dreams came true, we went to Boh tea planatation and sampled vanilla tea (very nice) and passion fruit tea (tasted like air freshener). In the afternoon we went for a small trek around Mossy Forest and was shown Malaysian nature. Afterwards was a trip to the butterfly farm which had more than butterflies, large tarantula's and other creepy crawlies (Rach wasnt ... read more

I was pretty surprised to spot 3 ‘ladies of the night’ still plying their trade out front, obviously a slow Tuesday night. The 4:50am banging on our bedroom door this morning was not necessary. We opened the door to a weary-eyed receptionist saying our bus was here to go to Perhentian Islands. Two problems with this – 1, we were going to the Cameron Highlands and 2, more importantly we didn’t leave for another 3 hours! Later that morning....... now fully awake ready for the bus, I took the opportunity to grab some snacks from the local shop. It was a short but a much needed break from the monotonous routine of office and home. My husband Siam and I wanted to get out of the regular surrounding of friends and family and spend some lazy time together. I wanted to attend to no phone calls and no socializing for 5 days and wanted to spend the entire time with my husband alone- lazing, eating and shopping with a bit of sightseeing to refresh our minds. Malaysia was an ideal choice this time as the short travel time was an added benefit. We arrived in Kuala Lampur on 27th April morning. Though was already in an euphoric mode since 26th April evening after office hours, I was very tired by the time we got into the bus that would take us to Cameron Highlands. ... read more
