Back in Vientiane!

______________________ E: Hi guys, I made it into Kratie, Cambodia, by now. But first about my last days in lovely Laos which I spent in Si Phan Don, aka the 4000 Islands: In Southern Laos, the Mekong becomes bigger and bigger and it Sawngthaew fans out forming a network of channels, sandbars and islands, about 14 kms wide.

Since we last wrote, we headed for Si Phan Don (4,000 islands). We spent a couple of days on Don Det, where we hired bicycles out to explore the island. It was an old-school bicyle; Hannah looked like Miss Marble, Ben looked like a plonker! 10 of us clubbed together and bought ourselves a pig! The son of one of the river-hut owners was given a water bottle full of Lao Lao (pretty much moonshine!) and told to go and kill it. Consequently he was hammered from 10am onwards!- The rest of the family weren't far behind! They put the pig on at 10am, and we ate at 7pm, - a fantastic feast! Lots of crackling, stickyrice, the works! It was amazing! Much of the time we just relaxed. On Don Det there's no electricity, ... read more

After a long slow boat trip down the Mekong (2 days!) we arrived in Luang Prabang, a lovely little town, very French, very relaxed, and a lovely place to spend a few days. Not much to do there but wander around, go and see a few temples, wander around the market, but it had a great feel to it. We climbed up to the highest temple to watch the sunset, where loads of women were selling birds in tiny cages "free for good luck" not that they were free, obviously, they cost a couple of dollars, but if you freed them you'd get good luck - we declined the offer, and when we reached the top we could see hundreds of the little things flying around, just waiting to be caught again my the women and ... read more

Not really sure if there is precisely 4 thousand islands, but this place is right at the bottom of Laos where the Mekong River spilts breaks up the land and is one of the places you can see the rare Irrawady Dolphins. After the bus journey from Vientiane we stopped in Pakse for some breakfast, seemed like an alright place but you wouldnt want to spend too long here, more of a base for day trips or a stop over if you have to. From Pakse we negotiated our own minivan which was luxurious until we picked up 3 others near Champasak. There were so many touts selling bus tickets and tuktuk drivers trying to get your business that I was so glad im travelling with a largish group as this could have been scary, ... read more

Pakse to Don Det (4,000 islands)Jason & Kirstyn O Found out that another early start was needed as only one 6 am sangtheaw. With time on our visa getting short we had to do it! Lovely dinner that night (absolutely starving) with some slightly suspect Beer Lao (??sweated - limited electricity) and off to bed early! Dragged ourselves out of bed and carried our gear out to the road for the Sangthaew. Was absolutely chockers with gear and people. At one stage we counted 32 people with a least 3 on the roof (they comfortably seat about 10). We transferred at Ban Na Hin and by the time we reached Voen Kham we had managed to make several more friends on the rest of the journey to Tha Kek. The ladies ooed and aahed over Kirstyn's ... read more

The next morning Sebastian, Angela, the Danish couple and myself took the hour or so long boat ride to Don Det island. Although it is much smaller than Don Khong, it is considered to be the most popular with travelers and is better equipt as far as services and guesthouses go. The boat drops you off at the sandy dock where the sunset and sunrise roads meet. Again, it was very hot and I opted for a bungalo on the sunset side. I was not into the idea of being woken up by the heat at 6:00 in the morning. I checked into a guesthouse off the main road, mainly because it was a single room with a fan. Later I learned that I could only use the fan between the hours of 6 and ... read more

So from the Capital we caught a bus down to probably my favorite place in Laos, the island of Don Det situated in an area known as Four Thousand Islands. The region gets its name because at this particular point the Mekong river widens and many islands emerge in the middle. Don Det was one of the larger islands in the area. Living on the island, we stayed a week, was like taking a step back in time. There are no roads, only dirt tracks. There is only electricity for 2 hrs a night and there is literally nothing to do. This to some people may sound hellish but it was anything but. While it was an island Don Det had a very different feel to a Thai island, even a relatively undeveloped one such ... read more

So we have finally made it all the way down south- almost back in Cambodia in fact! There are indeed 4000 islands here dotted around the Mekong- most not inhabited but its pretty cool! No electricity except for a few hours a day, lots of hammocks and lots of river around! Really enjoying the last few moments of asia doing not a lot! Rented bikes today and went to a waterfall and found a v cool bit of whirlpool to whizz round in! Also have met up with everyone we have ever bumped into travelling here! Anyway this is an extortionate rate so i best be off (and catch some rays- in need of topping up the fading tan!) Love to you all xxx ... read more
