4th July We were up early for our bus. The 4 of us went and climbed aboard, along with another guy from Germany. The other 3 guys, that had told Jon and Kylie couldn't make it as the banks wouldn't accept their cards so they were stuck with no money!!! (We later found out that one of the guys had to go way back up to Vientiane for some money) Shows you all how organised we are!!! As we came to pay (it should have been 6$) the woman put us down at 10$ each. Does she think we are thick!! So 6$ it was until the others didn't show up, then it went up to 9$ each. As we headed south to the four thousand islands (this is where the Mekong river gets split up ... read more

We left Vietienne on a relatively comfortable bus for an overnight trip to Pakse. Once in Pakse, we were encountered with a decision of where to go (because Pakse in itself does not offer much). We teamed up with another couple to head to a small town called Champasak. The tourist sight in Champasak is an Angkor-style temple - Wat Phu. The temple was nice but not the best we had seen. Nonetheless, the overnight to Champasak was worthwhile in the ride to and from offered great scenery, transportation in a crowded local bus with alot of rice under our feet (sometimes fun if in the right mind state) and a ride across the Mekong on a primitive ferry carrying buses, cars, motos and individuals. Following one night in Champasak, we continued on to Don Det ... read more

Lao Airlines flight QV522 from Siam Reap to Pakse was not what we expected. It was the first time any of us could remember flying with an airline that refused to publish its safety records, so as you can imagine expectations were low! In the end we felt like we were cheating a wee bit by flying to Southern Lao and avoiding the 3 day bus, boat and overnight stay combo that travelling through Cambodia would have entailed but the border crossing from Cambodia to Laos doesn't allow visas on arrival and waiting for one in Phomh Penh could have meant a 3-day wait, so we took the easy option and flew. I say the easy option but I had been dreading it. In the end it was certainly no worse than flying Ryanair, only with ... read more

One last stop before leaving Laos. The 4000 Islands is an area on the Mekong just north of the Cambodia border. We stayed on the island of Don Det and wished we could have stayed longer - unfortunately the nearest bank is either in Cambodia or a long bus journey back up north. Don Det was a great chilled out little community, it felt like staying on a farm - pigs, chickens and cows everywhere! It's really a place to do nothing but watch the world go by from a hammock or mess around on the river. To aid the cilling out process all items on the restuarant menus came with a "happy" option......nice!... read more
