Since our last entry we've made it into Laos and back out again into Vietnam so we're a bit behind on the blog updates. Getting in to Laos was our first border crossing without having to get on a plane and it couldn't have been easier. From the Thai border town of Chiang Kong we just had go to a little shed to get stamped out of Thailand and then jumped on a longtail boat across the Mekong river to Huay Xai in Loas which took all of 2 minutes. Once we got to the other side we filled out a little form and paid our $35 each for the 30 day visa and we were in. The money here is a bit confusing as they don't just use their local currency of Kip, they use ... read more

Viime paivina minua on erityisesti ihastuttanut pienet ja vahan suuremmatkin lapset. Hoi Anista matkattiin Vietnamin ystavallisimpaan kaupunkiin (nain mainosti opaskirja ja tuntui olevan ihan oikeassa) lahelle Laosin rajaa. Bussiasemalta hypattiin ihanien leveasti hymyilevien ruskeiden setien moottoripyorakyytiin, ja se kyyti huristi ihan hotellin ovista sisaan asti :) Puolessa paivassa ehdittiin kiertaa kaupungin nahtavyyksia ja jutella hyva tovi 17-vuotiaiden koulutyttojen kanssa, jotka tahtoi alkaa kirjeenvaihtoon meidan kanssa :) Kun paakaduilta poikkesi vahan syrjaan tupsahti heti maalaiskylaan, jossa hiekka pollysi ja lehmat kayskenteli siella taalla. Sielta loytyi myos orpokoti, jossa viihdyttiin pitka tovi. Heti pihaan saavuttuamme meidan luokse juoksi muutama pieni vilkeri ja halusi syliin. Ensimmaiseksi syliini kiipesi ihana pieni ruskea poika, joka heti tutki nenaani. Ja k... read more

Jabbadii (of zoiets) Zou "hallo" betekenen... Kop tchai (of zoiets) = dankuwel...

Time to bring you up to date gang.... we've been a bit slack on the blog but as you will hear it is not really the Lao way to rush/work/do things on time... ''don't worry, no problem, we have time''....... We were in Laos for a month so this may be a long entry, but with none of you at work because of the snow we've heard sooo much about, you've got time....... Where do we start with Laos.... well all we can say is we thought it would take a lot to knock India off the top spot for our favourite place, but Laos has probably done it. There is nothing negative we can say about Laos, the people the food, the fun, the scenery, the drinks, the vibe is all top notch. We left ... read more

Saturday 24th January We had breakfast and intended getting the local bus outside our guest house to Pakse - about 40km away. As we paid the owner our bill the bus sped past early. He said not to worry as he'd take us to the ferry to catch the bus up. This he did but the bus was already departing on the Heath Robinson catamarran that passes for a car ferry. All the locals know each other and the owner phoned the bus driver on his mobile to wait for us on the other bank. Meanwhile we boarded a small bodge of a ferry with two motorbikes and a few pedestrians. To say Jen was not keen to get on would be an understatement but with a little cajoling she got on. It was a bit ... read more

Zajtrk je bil podoben vecerji: spet sva zradirala eno celo lubenico, tokrat le za 5k kip (ponjo sem sla jaz - how do I do it?). Zraven seveda bagete. Vse to na verandi, obsijani z jutranjim soncem. Nice, we like!

What a great week! The south of Laos did not disappoint at all and we really loved what we experienced here. From Tha Kaek we headed south to Savannahket, but just for a day. Nice little, very sleepy town. Our highlight were the monks in the garden of the monastery belonging to Wat Sainyaphum, who wanted to practice their English with us. They were most intested in how much our journey to Laos would cost and when we told them (already dramatically understated) they could not believe that one person could have so much money. Here we should mention that a simple dinner here costs around 2-3 pounds for both of us. It is actually difficult to spend more... We recognised that people got more and more happy to see us (tourists) the further south we ... read more

I find myself in an internet cafe in the transit hub of Southern Laos with 5 hours to kill until the overnight bus to Vientienne. Technically I should be back in the UK as my around-the-world ticket was only valid for 12 months, but due to the small detail that is my travelling addiction I am still on the road and now back in South East Asia. They say life often moves in circles and my life for the past 14 months has found come full circle back to South East Asia, with many smaller circles, triangles and crazy shapes made along the way. I haven't written for a long time due to a combination of lack of time and writer's block. I was also working in rural Victoria for 3 and a half months in ... read more
