We arrived to Pakse in the early afternoon. The city itself is one of the largest in the country with over 70.000 residents. But that doesnt mean its anything special. In fact, we found it quite boring and uninspiring. Still we decided to spend another day there, since we wanted to check out the local market, supposedly the biggest in southern Laos, and the nearby weaving village of Ban Sapphai. The market was truly big, but not much different from others weve seen on the trip. Ban Sapphai was a dissapointment. I expected to see lots of locals weaving and selling famed textiles but none of that happened. On Tuesday evening we were having our last meal at the Nazim restaurant, a branch of the "Nazim Empire" of Indian restaurants with cheap and quality Indian food. ... read more

Well hello again all! It's been quite a while since the last installment and we've done lots! So, sorry, it'll be a fairly beefy one again! Lots of photos on here - which take an absolute age to upload - we'll rename them in a couple of days or so instead of having just numbers. Enjoy...! So, we told you of our plans to ride elephants and such like so here we go! The Erawan waterfalls were really pretty and it was a good day for it too. Took over an hour to get up and we swam in the pool at the top trying to avoid getting nibbled by the fish! Didn't have too long there because of our jam-packed day but we took lots of pics on the way down - including some of ... read more

Okay, lightning quick through this one as we were lightning quick through Laos. I am sat in the internet cafe in Pakse in southern Laos about to head into Thailand and we thought now would be a good time to tell you about Laos. Last time we spoke we had just left Ban Lung in Cambodia. The rather exciting news here is that we had to 'bribe' our way over two borders in ten minutes. Well, bribe is maybe a little strong. We were asked for one dollar each and we paid but it was still quite cool. The thing was that we were crossing this very remote border on a Sunday and the border guards requested 'overtime payment' (thier quotes, not ours). Of course it was corrupt but it just seemed easier to pay it ... read more

So the Lao chapter of my trip has come to an end, and overall the impression I have of this country is outstanding. It is very small, has been at the centre of many conflicts, still has got a long way in terms of development, and is relatively recently open to tourism, and I really hope it keeps it's authenticity. Things I loved about Laos: - The friendliness fo the people. - It's cheap: a meal can easily be bought for 1-3 USD - Lao coffee: reminds me a bit of turkish coffee (it's quite thick) but is served with condensed milk, hmm - the town of Luang Prabang - The 2 day trek I did in the mountains (and the chicken head game!) - This being the country in which I experienced my first travelling ... read more

Woooooooow I can't believe how fast time has passed. The last few days have been very busy with Moving Forward. Indeed, in the last week, I have slept in 2 night buses or guest houses where I stayed one night each, so basically every single day has been spent travelling, I think I am beating a record of kilometres travelled by land. Ok maybe not the world record, maybe just my personal record (because people who travel for example on the transiberian express cover way more kilometres in a day, but they cheat as they just sit on the train). So what happenened since last time? I embarked on yet another night bus ride from Vientiane to Pakse in the south of the country. After my unfortunate experience on the night bus from hell with crappy ... read more

Day 129 We left the lovely Don Det on a small boat back to the mainland at 9am so we could catch the 10am local bus to Pakse. We arrived into Ban Nakaseng at about 9.15 and were taken to the bus station to wait for our bus. We had had the option to take the local bus (or songthaew which is actually a truck with covered benches in the trailer section) or the VIP bus, a snazzy air-conditioned coach. It wasn¡¦t going to be a very long journey, around 3 hours, so we had opted for the far cheaper local bus. We had jumped into the back to wait for it to depart when a toothless local fella came over and tried to talk to us. We understood pretty much nothing of what he said ... read more

Wir beschlossen dann unsere letzte Nacht in Pakse ... read more

Dear Blog, I'm on a mission to get up to date so no beating around the bush today. So back in Vientiane again, which felt good to be back especailly as I had been missing the Scandinavain coffee shop that we seemed to have frequented on rather a regular basis. Spent the day trying to organise my cambodian visa...hired granny bikes and cycled the few km out to the embassy only to find that it had shut for lunch, so cycled all the way back in to town and then cycled out again only to be told that we had to have our passports in before lunch. Great. All that cycling in the midday heat for nothing. Went and looked around the museum which had a fine collection of Bhudda's (which are really cool..in fact I ... read more
