Our day started at 10:30AM today and I was excited to see what the city has to offer. Our first destination was a place called The Tokyo SkyTree, not only is this a must place to go see for the view, but Japan is Star Wars crazy. I thought the U.S. was ready for the movie, but Japan will transform their tallest structure into a lightsaber. (Step it up, guys) Some fun facts that I learned about the Tokyo Skytree: I'm scared of heights. I'm really scared of heights. Why are my pants warm? The Skytree Tower is the tallest in the world and the tallest in Japan. When we stepped in the elevator, we were moving at 10 m/s or 32.8 feet/second. Our ears popped and the cold air would hit your face and before ... read more

Hi friends!! Today marks my first official week in Japan, and SO MUCH has happened. I've registered for classes, visited a bunch of different places around Tokyo, and have eaten a very large amount of おにぎり(onigiri--rice balls wrapped in dried seaweed with fish/beans/plum inside). Seriously, I've been eating at least two a day for breakfast every. single. day. A quick disclaimer before I start: I do not have a working camera at the moment, so there will be no pictures for this blog post. I'm sorry! :( I will be getting a Japanese cell phone on Monday, so my next post will definitely have pictures. Traveling here was quite the adventure: I woke up on Thursday, September 10th at 3am St. Louis time and left for Seattle at 6am. I had one stop in between St. ... read more

Well we have decided that we would like to see Tokyo by water as we normally try to do this when we get to a city and last time we were here we did not even think about it. So looking at all the literature we decided to do the Tokyo Cruise - so off we go on the train (we are real commuters now you know) and get to the Asakusa boat station to be told we cannot get a boat until around 1.15. That meant we had to use up a few hours so we decided we would go and get something to eat. We found the market at Asakusa and recognised that we had been here before - it is a bit touristy well a lot when you see rickshaws lining up to ... read more

So we arrived in Haneda airport and we are so jet lagged it is unbelievable you would not think we had got some sleep on the airplane. So we get out JR rail pass at the airport and off we trot to try to find the hotel. Getting to the hotel was a doddle but then they said we were booked into a smoking room - err no this is not good with Mike's asthma so we asked if they could change it and guess what yes if we upgraded. Too be fair it was not a lot and we got a lot bigger room so win win for everyone. If you have ever been in a hotel room in Japan you know they are really quite small. Well it does not end there as we ... read more

Het... read more

Vaihteeksi päivitys blogiin eli tervetuloa lukemaan suorastaan tuskallisen yksityiskohtaista kuvausta reilun kahden viikon lomastani Japanissa Helmi-Maaliskuun vaihteessa 2014. Teksti on enimmäkseen kirjoitettu tien päällä Nokia E6 puhelimella. Tiedossa on 4 tai 5 osaa joista tässä ensimmäinen: Cityjetin Lennolla DUB-CDG esiintyi jonkin verran turbulenssia joten kiristin turvavyötä hiukan ja jatkoin Economist lehden lukemista. Snacksejakin tarjottiin ja kyytipojaksi löytyi olut 250ml tölkissä. Perillä kone tietenkin pysäköi kauas terminaalista ja bussikyyti terminaaliin otti aikansa. Terminaalissa odotti tuttuun tapaan turvatarkastus jonka jälkeen katsastin Chanel Allure Homme edt:n hinnan koska olin juuri sellaisella kokoelmaani Dublinin kentällä täydentänyt. Aavistus hinnoittelusta osui oikeaan ja Pariisin hinta oli pari euroa kalliimpi. Ostin siis vain litran hyvää Irkkuvi... read more

Got a bit of sleep on the plane and landed in Tokyo around 2. Thanks to Mom-in-law's easy instructions we exchanged currency and got our rental phone at the ABC. Next took the Keisi Express train into Tokyo and found Robyn's parents at the Niporri station and made our way via the metro to where we're staying in Ikebukuro. After a shower and shave we explored a down-home meal at a nearby Torikizoku restaurant (http://www.torikizoku.co.jp/) where they served us chicken of all kinds. Each came on a skewer: Teriaki, lightly salted, deep fried, chicken meat balls. Also we had a lightly oiled raw cabbage, salad and edemame. The rice they cook at your table in small caldrons with a flame. When the flame goes out after 20mins or so, you wait 5 more minutes and then ... read more

To celebrate the 4th of July - or, not really, but it just so happened that the friend I was going with is military and had the 4th off and it fell on MY day off of Thursday - I went to the Sunshine City aquarium in Ikebukuro! It was really fun, and it was exciting to go back to a part of the city that I hadn't been to since I arrived in Japan a year ago. We actually had a little trouble finding exactly where we needed to go. We found Sunshine City okay, but nowhere on the side of the building did it list the aquarium, and after some furious google searching, I gave up, used my dictionary to find how to say "aquarium" (suizokukan) and asked the information desk where it was. ... read more

Our adventure begins! so, we have arrived safely after a quiet and comfortable flight, which we consequently slept our way through but are now paying the price for in jetlag! Tokyo airport left us with some notable first impressions of Japan. The first would be how wonderfully efficient everything is. We were through customs/immigration/baggage pick up in about 40mins, and had cash and airport transfers direct to our hotel booked with unexpected ease. I say unexpected due to our second observation; English is not widely spoken. At all! Thirdly, the Japanese seem very polite and helpful despite other language barrier (cue lots of hand gestures and bowing!). Finally, there are a remarkable number of previously never-considered decisions to make when using the bathroom. Music? A variety of jets? Or even the sound of a toilet flushing ... read more

people say that japan is where fashion happens first and that sooner or later the rest of the world will get to see what we should all be wearing. well, having completed a thorough investigation of numerous shops i can provide some fashion forward feedback. this month we will be mostly wearing tartan - tartan high heels, puffa jackets and mini-skirts. hats have ears. berets with ears, trilbys with ears, bobble hats with ears. yes, ears. get with the ear programme. also making a feature are temporary lip tattoos - think rainbows, leopard print, and hundreds and thousands. unusually we can also look forward to decorative eye patches. don't worry though, the eye patches are perforated and vision is not impaired. fashion can be friendly. shopping in japan isn't all about fashion. the food is incredible. ... read more
