After leaving my friends and family in England on 7th October and travelling many, many hours, I arrived at Narita airport in Japan on October 8th. I managed to get some sleep on the plane but not much as the woman sat behind me on the flight may have missed the point of a touch screen tv, the operative word being TOUCH, and not POINT AS HARD AS YOU CAN. Anyways at the airport I got the directions to Ikebukuro, where my first hostel would be. I had to get 2 trains from Narita airport to Ikebukuro. On the 1st train, I asked a man on also on the train where I had to get off for the change over to the line for Ikebukuro. He spoke English really well and it turned out he was ... read more

Namja Town Ikebukuro has got the craziest ice cream combinations you can imagine. The ast time I went there was with Myles and Tiff a few weeks ago and we experimented rather chastely with buttered potato ice cream. As I prowled through the various types on display before we made our selection I knew it was the perfect place to bring my friend Kieryn on her trip to Tokyo. We met up with Go and his boyfriend Twinkle had some lunchtime gyoza and then made our way to Ice Cream City where we gorged ourselves on the most varying and somewhat horrific flavours; Pumpkin, India Curry, Beef Tongue, Sea Salt, Pudding, Sakura the list goes on and on and on. It's amazing at how much these Ice Creams actually taste like the flavour they're supposed to ... read more

I went on a date today, by accident. You may think that dating cannot be an accidental thing and I'm only just saying that as way of fobbing it off because it didn't go well but you have to believe me that it was entirely an innocent mistake. I have nothing against dating Japanese men, it's just that if I was going to go out on a date I'd probably prefer it to be with a man who wasn't under the impression that I am a scuba diving, gun owning, goldfish enthusiast who is a former resident of Malaysia named Jessica. I really never intended it all to get this far. When I started applying for private students I used the name Jessica so people couldn't track me on the internet and murder me in my ... read more

Tokyo is the New York City of Asia .... well, almost. Take Manhattan, multiply it's population by 4, jack up the fashion dare coefficient, add a billion more flashing neon signs and similar numbers of department stores, subtract the stinking sewers and street bums and there you have it. Unbelievable! Somehow the confusion melts into pure efficiency. Just don't attempt crossing the current of subway passengers en route to somewhere other than your chosen destination. Not that it matters where you end up. It's all so damn exciting. The shopping in this city is insane. We're hardly shopaholics, but the sheer variety of so many THINGS that the Western world wouldn't even dream of producing, (nor do they have the population to support the multitude of flavours, aromas, types, etc) draws us into store after store to ... read more

Went to the TIC in Tokyo and the lady there booked us a fab hotel (a bit above budget but we were desperado and deserved it) In Ueno in Tokyo. Had to get there on the subway and make a changeover at 6.30 the bloody height of rush hour in TOKYO…it was not easy. Ueno is described as Japan before the economic boom of the 80’s and 90’s and it really had a deadly vibe. EXACTLY like what you see in films from that time and Gary said it was totally Blade Runner but I have never seen that so can’t say. Ordered random grub again with lots of pointing and smiling. Ended up with tofu (I thought it was chicken) it was really good but after three lumps I really couldn’t stomach anymore but at ... read more

I'm sitting across the table from a german girl in a traditional izakaya in Ikebukuro. I'm drunk and trying to teach her how to order food in japanese. She's giggling and pushes the button for the waiter to come over, he arrives at the table bowing deeply and asks in Japanese what we would like. Ines panics and forgets everything I taught her in her minute japanese lesson and orders in english. Damn! She's giving english speakers a bad name! He doesn't know she's german! He probably just thknks she's lazy!! Bah I sneer at her drunkenly and accuse her of disgracing my name, she sneers back at me and we start to duel across the table in chopsticks. Now we're both giving gaijins a bad name. Our next two dishes have arrived on the table; ... read more

Yes I am free tomorrow. Where? Holy frick I have my first private student. I hadn't expected a response so fast. God, I'm not sure I can do this, I've only taught kiddies before.... and how do you teach english to someone who clearly can already speak it anyway? Apparently all I have to do is chat about whatever comes to my mind for two hours and it's easy. Well, easy to say it's easy, I'm still scared. Oh he's just written back - he wants a two hour lesson. Jeeeezus. OK, I can do this I'll be fine. Sanae is doing my make up and I have a new personality and a fake name. Jessie Collins - it has a nice ring to it. It was Jessica until Sanae told me it would be difficult ... read more

Ooooh Sanae and I went on a double date with the girls from Hong Kong tonight! Yay We were planning to go to Yokohama but because of the rain decided to take it indoors and check out the planetarium in Ikebukuro instead. Sanae and I got there first and argued the whole way through Sunshine City about which session to go to at the planetarium. I wanted to see Cosmic Collision! A bold and adventurous ride through space with exploding planets and colliding meteorites. Exciting Stuff. Sanae wanted to see the pleasant beach one which promised a relaxing, tropical 40 minutes that would remove you from all the troubles of this world. Sounds nice enough, but where's the explosions? Where's the adrenalin? Where's the Cosmic Collision!? Anyway, our arguments were getting quite heated by the time ... read more

Christine was planning a trip to Japan. She started reading about Tokyo online, read a few of my blogs and decided (quite rightly) that I sounded awesome, so, she emailed me. I got Christines email about a week ago, thought (quite rightly) that she sounded awesome and decided to respond to her. We hit it off with a bang and set up a date.... so here's the stories about my two day date with the one legged beauty from Kong Kong - Christine: Date One - Namjatown, Ikebukuro Japan has a theme park devoted to food. Oh my god. Heaven and joy and all things wonderful, it truly was an amazing day I discovered this. For those who don't know me, I like to eat. I like to eat a lot. Anyway, Christine, Yumiko and I ... read more
