i am in toyko and still have keyboard issues. this time my internet cafe is quite cosy. i have a thick cushion in my computer booth and have to take my shoes off before entering. this morning i went to watch kabuki - an old fashioned form of japanese theatre. i thought it was a cross between chaucer and the panto. the plays are meant to look like the floating world with every scene perfect and balanced. so much so that the story is secondary to how everything looks. the audience was filled with japanese ladies-who-lunch with some incredible designer clothes and some questionable plastic surgery. there were two plays - kokusenya and kanjincho - at a total of 3 hours. several people fell asleep but all woke up for the interval where the mingled smell ... read more

Hello from Japan. I am actually in Kyoto now, but this whole blog will be almost completely about Tokyo and the day trips I took from there. Continuing from when I last blogged. The first few days in April (which were my last few days in Thailand) just involved travelling. I didn't see a bed for two nights, instead I slept on a train, an airport bench and a plane before arriving in Japan! I was insanely tired by the time I arrived at Narita airport as I had failed to sleep properly on the plane and I hadn't slept the night before on the train, but I was still ridiculously excited as I was going to be seeing my friend from home soon. Once I had made it through customs (where I was made to ... read more

Hey World! Step one, celebrate the new year! Step two, share some of these memories with me! This could be my favorite set of pictures that I've sent out so far. Just putting this blog together had me laughing and smiling (cringing sometimes too) while looking at some of the incredible times that we've been having over here. So I focused more on the descriptions of the pictures to tell the story together with the shots so be sure to check them out and go through them full screen to get the best feel for it, cuz I love hearing that you feel like you're there with me and taking part in all my adventures, since I wish you all were closer to me much of the time! I'll let you get into the pictures and ... read more

Hey everybody, I'm back! Once again it's been too long since I sent an update, and once again there's too much to tell in one blog post. Big events and big changes to mention, including a jam packed last few weeks. But this time it hasn't been because of work, but because of vacations, trips, and visits from best friends. So I'll save some of that for the next blog and start by going back in time a bit further to talk about all the good stuff from September, October and November. So check it: I left off last time telling some stories about climbing mount Fuji and telling you about changes with my job and how life in Japan has been affecting me so far. Well since then there has been some huge changes in ... read more

Whew! I can't believe it has been almost a month since I have written. I think that is a good thing- it means I have been busy and involved in my life here. It also means I have lots to share! We had our school fall break this past week (we get a whole week off!), so I went to visit Dana, one of my roommates from college, in Tokyo. I have heard lots of different things about Tokyo- it is busy, it is expensive, there is no english, the food is great- so I was very excited to see it for myself. My arrival in Tokyo started off a little rocky. My flight got in at 10pm- Dana was a little bit late to get me because she had been traveling around all day with ... read more

Tokyo 05.09.2010 Arrived back at the hotel around 3pm. Checked in and decided to go to Shibuya to do a bit of souvenir shopping. The place was buzzing with shoppers etc. Didn't really buy anything. That night we decided to eat in the Mexican we saw on our first day. The place was packed, but we did manage to get a table and the food and beer was nice. We then visited the bar we first went to. Had some umeshu and Edamame (boiled soya beans) served as a snack. Back at the hotel we see Amy. We have a chat about what we'd done that day; she was going hiking somewhere the next day. 06.09.2010 Last day in Japan. Our flight was at 9pm, so we leave our bags and travel to Tokyo tower. ... read more

Today we had a much more eventful day than yesterday, visiting Tokyo Big Site, Odaiba, Central Tokyo and Akihabara! I'm not sure if we were supposed to go into Tokyo Big Site-as there were no tourists and millions of Japanese businessmen-but we went in anyway and got some good pic's from the roof. Odaiba was awesome. The whole of Odaiba is reclaimed land (land that used to be sea) and there is an awesome monorail thing that's on tyres (so it isn't actually a monorail). Most of Odaiba hasn't been built on, unlike the rest of Tokyo, but there is an awesome shopping/arcade/Toyota-showing-off centre with an added ferris wheel. It is called Venus shopping centre and has a Toyota museum, a shopping mall that is designed to look Italian (for no reason!), a 115m high ferris ... read more
