The flight was suprisingly interesting because there were lots of good films on offer, but it was completely overshadowed by our first day in Japan! When we first arrived we couldn't notice many differences between it and england, but as you get further into the airport you suddenly realise how different it is. Japan has many different traditions that even foreingers must follow e.g. don't burp, fart or blow your nose in public and in some buildings you have to take your shoes off to go inside. But the major differences come when you get into the city. Tokyo has no city layout whatsoever, no parks and everyone lives in a block of flats. Most of the roads are flyovers and in some places there are three flyovers overlapping. The roads are as wide as english ... read more

Well, it's my last day in Tokyo, in fact it's my last day of holiday. Boo! I feel like I've spent most of my time here travelling from place to place on the metro, so today I'm going to walk around more, try and get my bearings in this metropolis. I start of by going to the Kabuki theatre to try and book tickets do this evening, when I get there I find a queue around the block, a complete mix of people waiting to get in. I find out that kabuki starts early and that the play will go on all day, you can either watch the whole day or watch acts independently. I also find that this evenings performances of this famous play, SUGAWARA DENJU TENARAI KAGAMI (Sugawara and the Secrets of Calligraphy), are ... read more

IT'S GHIBLI DAY. Going to see the ghibli museum is the only this I've been organised about, I bought my tickets months ago and they have been stored safely in my bag all the way here and today's the day.  My early start is soon whittled away and at nine I leave with my excitement to find my breakfast and find my wonderland. My breakfast is a mixed bag, my rice balls - onigiri- arn't that inspiring but my custard filled bun is soft and sweet and I eat it on the platform waiting for my train to Mitaka, it's quite a way out of the city but we never leave the high rise grey of the metropolis. When I get there I catch the cat bus, honestly the cat bus from totoro I'm already sold. ... read more

I'm predispossed to dislike Tokyo, not for any good reason, just that I'm weary. It's 6 am, it's cold and raining everything is in the wrong language, it's rush hour, I've no idea where I'm going and the shower gel in my bag has burst and I've got an acompanying sickly sweet strawberry smell following me everywhere I go.  Ok so non of them are good reasons to dislike a city, sitting back on the bulletesque train I'm I can see paddy fields, these small sunked squares are surrounded by small raised banks, they instantly remind me of Ghibli and I'm expecting bikes and people to be running along the edges.  When I get to Tokyo central it takes my breath away, so many people, moving in all directions without incident, flowing except for me a ... read more

Konnichiwa All! After Hong Kong we flew to Japan on 19th Nov 2009 (and as I am already in Bangkok at the moment I thought I better update my blog about beautiful Japan). I absolutely LOVE Japan! It is such a beautiful country with loads of beautiful hidden temples, shrines and gardens. The Japanese people are so friendly and extremely helpful (always going out of their way to assist in any way possible - which was much appreciated on our first day there when we couldnt find our hotel late at night). And it was so easy to get around especially on the comfortable speedy bullet trains which were always on time and were always so clean and spacious. Right, so as a summary of some of the things we did in Japan see below: Tokyo ... read more

Sorry for the late posts on these next few, but internet has been hard to come by, as has time, so we finally have some time in an internet cafe so get ready to be caught up. We were on the plane, seat belts fastened, ready to begin our journey around the world for one year...or so we thought. The pilot announced that we had to change planes in LA due to a mechanical failure of some kind, but we got here in one piece (a little late) and ready for our adventures. From the airport we took the train into Tokyo. Rachel immediately loved Tokyo...the sounds and big city excitement reminded her of London. Ian isn't used to big cities as much...but was looking forward to our one day in Tokyo. We found a place ... read more

So apparently when I landed in Japan, I brought bad weather. I've been told that it had not been to hot and humid, and not raining at all, until me. I've only been here 5 days, but is has rained off and on through all of them. Today seems to be the worst, its been pouring since 6 am. It makes it hard for me to do anything, because I did not bring rain clothes. Everyone who goes on an extended trip forgets one important thing, well this was it for me. Rain clothes. I do not know what I was thinking coming to Asia at this time of year (aka the rainy season) without the right clothing. I have no rain shoes, jackets or umbrellas. I'm going to have a hard time getting rain ... read more
