Caught the train to Osaka today (very big and extremely busy) the main thing we wanted to see was the umeda sky building. First we went to the underground market (takimi koji), this was done like a japanese market at the beginning of the 20th century. Then we explored the island garden-island forest, which were really nice considering they were in the middle of the city, before heading to the very top of the building (the floating garden observatory). This place was really cool and definately a lot better than Kyoto tower's observatory even though that is good to. We ended the day with a visit to Osaka castle and a nice relaxing pint at the pub.... read more

So I had quite the exciting and full weekend for the most part. It was fun!! We didn't have school on Monday either, which made it even better. It was Respect for the Age day, or something like that. Not really sure. But anyway, I will probably split it up into two entries because both days that I went and did something were quite long!! So anyway, Friday night... not a whole lot of new things going on. Though apparently, Otosan came back that night! He must have come back very late. Okasan waited up for him, but both Mai-san and I went to bed. I got to meet him in the morning though. He was very nice! He's a company employee... I believe. Apparently, he works strange hours and goes on a lot of trips ... read more

So I decided to goto Osaka just to do a little shopping and meet up with some friends that I know there. It was pretty easy getting there from Honazono Station near my dormitory but I did not know that it would take nearly two hours to get there. Apparently there are a couple of lines for mass transit out of Kyoto. The JR (Japan Rail) serves the majority of Japan and is the most efficient way to travel through Japan. For this instance I would use it to travel to Osaka. I had to transfer trains at Kyoto station and then on to Osaka from there. I met a couple of nice Souteast Asian college students who attend the other Ritsumeikan campus somewhere south of Osaka I believe. Amit was the first one of the ... read more

So on our first official day here in Japan...we don't just stay at the dorms and sleep of the jet-lag like everyone else. Our butts are up by 8:30...and we are off to Osaka by 9:00. I really don't understand how anyone can come to this country w/o speaking Japanese. We had to ask all the time where certain places were. So first we had to get on the bus..to head to Hirakatashi eki. We had to make sure we got on the right bus. hehe! But everyone was really helpful. So that was like a 10 minute bus ride. Then at the train station...yeah..we had no idea how to buy s stupid ticket. So we had to ask...again. Which btw...super easy. So we are on the platform....having no idea which train to get on...and each ... read more

One major highlight of my summer break was a camp with people from the dorm...- After a 9 hour night bus home from my Tokyo trip back to Osaka, 2 days of sleep and rotemburo (a public outdoor bath, nearby), Skyping friends and family, catching up with a couple of friends back here and having one last night out with Sarah before we said goodbye, I went off on a "camp" with 69 other people from the Kansai Uni dorms. 50 guys, of whom I knew not one, and 20 girls, who I made heaps better friends with over the three days we were together. Fantastic trip. Don't understand why me and one other foreigner are the only two exchange students ever to have gone on this annual camp! It was so good for making mates, ... read more

Japan is awesome! The culture shock strikes right to your core as you wade around a sea of indecipherable characters like a blind shark. Futuristic technology meets a backward existence where rusty old bikes seem to be the most popular form of transport and the crime rate is so low there's not a bike lock to be seen. We opted for a 'Japanese Style' hotel room in Osaka and we were delighted by the simplicity of fresh tatami mats with their barn-like scent and futons rolled up in the cupboard. Our only complaints revolved around communal bath times according to some random schedule, (far more convenient for men. Perhaps the women aren't expected to be anywhere important during the day?).... and the heated toilet seats: not one bit of pleasure in the scorching city heat. Keeping ... read more

If you live in Kansai, there's no excuse not to visit Osaka. Saying that, it took me 3 months before my first visit, and I was quite surprised by it. Although it is a business town, a bustling hub for visitors -both international and domestic, everyone I met there was really friendly, and uber-fashionable. In Osaka, it is easy for me to feel daunted by the tall, towering buildings, the immensity of the city sprawl, and the solo traveller factor. The people's attitudes do help with combatting this, as they are always ready with a willing smile, but you always know you're alone in a big city. This visit, however, was not solo! Danilo was with me, and I wanted to show him the sights of Osaka - though I hadn't (and haven't) seen them all ... read more

We arrived in Japan on the 26th July after two full days on our ferry from Shanghai. The ferry was a much more luxurious one than we were used to, with our cruise down the Yangtze River, with numerous activities for entertainment including DVDs, Table Tennis and the fun night time activity of Karaoke. Our Italian friend Davide's version of YMCA was definitely something to write home about ('eeets fun to stay at der Y M C A' all in a cheery comedy European way), as well as a strip tease during Sweet Caroline by a Canadian guy we had met (he got a bit excited with the lines 'touching me, touching you... '). There were some really great people that we had met on the ferry, including a couple from Leeds called Sally and Dan. ... read more
