It's midnight - officially Sunday the 20th. It was a wonderful adventure filled day - as if the 'lunch' with the dancing ladies wasn't enough - we just returned from a beautiful feast given us by the Shakudo family- on the roof of their home we were treated to crab, sushi, tempura and American Potato salad that Hidemi made just for us. An interesting use of potato salad here - they make sandwiches on thick white bread with it! Of course more beer, shochu - but we were smart this time and stuck with tea! There was uncooked squid on the table, and Ted ate some crab brains - everyone was quite excited by some thick gelatinous substance in the water the crabs were cooked in - turned out to be collagen, very good for your ... read more

Good morning all. It is 6:48am, Saturday morning. Joyce and I are up but Ted and Nobu are still asleep. I guess they can't keep up with us veterans. Yesterday was a very long and exciting travel day but today we hit the ground running. We asr scheduled to meet with the ladies of Ted's dancing troupe in the morning, lunch with them, and then onto the Shakudo family this evening for dinner. Phew! I hope our jet-lagged bodies will be able to take the punishment. Last night Ted and Nobu took us to a local noodle restaurant where we feasted on noodles, tea, and some plum wine. It was just what we needed after the long travel day. Delicious! Right now, I going to have my OJ and my daily regimen of pills to help ... read more

After 23 hours of uneventful travel we have arrived safe and sound in Osaka! Ted and Nobu met us at the airport and took us home via train - with all those suitcases (with many of Ted's books) it was no small feat! ... read more

Finalizing our wonderful staying in Japan :((( We wish we could stay longer... but definitely we'll come back and we strongly recommend you to visit the country... People, culture, food, countryside, cities, shopping, so many topics are surprising and interesting! We visited 2 opposite cities: Kyoto and Osaka. First, Kyoto looks like the very traditional Japonese city. It was saved from bombing during the 2nd World War and so many part of the city are aged. It's an amazing place to visit Buddhist temples and cycling around. We could finally do bicycle the whole day until we didn't fell our butt anymore! We stayed at a mini hostel owned by only one young Japanese guy, with tatamis in the rooms. Paradox is that people are very polite and never brake the rules... but once on their ... read more

7:30pm and I was on a train in Osaka watching an atmospheric buzz of Kimono clad Japanese, while on route to a fireworks display, wondering how only three hours in Osaka could possibly have been so awesome! I arrived at Shin-Osaka station around 3:20, Oh sorry 3:21 Shinkansen time :-), in usual style I quickly made my way from Shin-Osaka, through the mayhem that is Osaka station and onwards to Fukushima (where I was booked to stay for the night) I checking in, dropped my bags all with a total turn-around time of 1hour 10 minutes, I’m learning how to optimise time! Subway map in hand I headed for my first Oh wow experience in Osaka, the Aquarium. I think if you had seen me walking around the aquarium you would have thought I was 8 ... read more

After the day I arrived in my designated city, one of my JTEs M-sensei was kind enough to spend his two O-bon festival holidays to show me around Osaka, the central city of West Japan and more importantly my new home for the upcoming two years. Located at the intersection of Yodo river and the Seto Inland sea, Osaka has developed as the principle center of trade and cultural exchange with not only other parts of Japan, as well as S. Korea and China. The canals and bridges that were built to promote the movement of goods had been the foundation of Osakan culture that continues to shape its people's daily life until today. As I casually strolled around the city with M-sensei, listened to his tales as a child growing up in this city, I ... read more

Japans efficiency was impressed upon me even before our MD-11 had touched down in the country. Flying into Kansai airport you can easily see its perfect rectangle shape of reclaimed land sitting as an island just off Osaka, but it can be slightly unnerving for some as the plane drops lower and lower while viewing from your window seat nothing but the blue sea, which gives for the briefest moment the impression that your about to touch down on the ocean and its all gone horribly wrong (don't like flying by the way, can you tell?) then suddenly tarmac is there and you've touched down for a safe landing. Once through immigration and having completed the promise to notify authorities of any flu like symptoms me, Matt and Alex made our way to information to find ... read more

Today was our first full day to soak up the major and thrilling city of Osaka. To be honest, this has been one of the longest days of my life. To begin the day off, we all ate at the hotel restaurant and had an interesting breakfast. There was thick bacon, rice with fish seasoning, an egg product (?), yogurt, and some other trays. It is amazing to see the difference in an American breakfast compared to a traditional Japanese breakfast. In America, the breakfast can consist from pancakes, cereal, muffins, and omelets; however, in Japan, breakfast is not as extravagant. After our delicious breakfast, a small group of us headed out to a shopping complex. This was the most amazing shopping center that I have ever seen; there are 8 floors, all of which have ... read more

The day of May 19, 2009 officially marks the day that my first foreign trip began. As I write this first entry, it is May 21. There has been an excessive and unending venture to come here. We left at approximately 5 pm from Bridgewater State College and worked our way to New York's JFK Airport. As soon as we entered JFK, we were taking our seats that would comfort us for the next 14 hours. Our connecting flight to Seoul, South Korea, was Asiana Airlines, a Korean airline that serves hundreds of countries. The group was stunned when, in the darkness of the distant runway, looked out upon a Boeing 767. The plane, of course was extremely large and held nearly 400 passengers. Movies and music kept us entertained but the never- ending thrill of ... read more
