We started off our last full day in Tokyo visiting Ginza once again. Then it was off to celebrate darling Rupert's 2nd birthday at Ueno Park - the biggest in Tokyo - along with hundreds of Japanese families and other tourists. Despite Kev's earlier plan to visit to the Zoo, instead he went to see Ueno Lake and attended a free rock concert while I visited the Metropolitan Art Musuem. Earlier we both spent some time exploring the Tokyo National Museum which was very impressive. One of the musuem's four main buildings was closed due to building work to make it earthquake proof. Our man in Tokyo, who had been to a party the night before spent the day 'resting', joining us later for dinner. On the morning of our departure from Tokyo we arranged for ... read more

Now, I have given great deference to Anthon Bourdain in many of my entries. We try to hit places he has been. I became frustrated when we arrived in Osaka because several of the places he went to were closed, or going through renovations, or who knows what. But, I give him credit for one thing. Osaka would not have even been on our Japan itinerary were it not for our absolute favorite No Reservations episode on Osaka. Check out the episode at And, thank goodness for the tasty tidbits on No Reservations because Osaka was our kind of town. If Tokyo is the NYC of Japan with the corporate world, a bit of snobbishness, etc., then Osaka is the Chicago of Japan - the second city - understanding that the corporate world needs to be ... read more

Day 451: Wednesday 23rd September - Rolling back the years I’m very ready to move on from Kyoto. Too many temples, too many shrines, too many gardens and too many tourists are not good for the health!! I’m done with sightseeing, I’m done with my guidebook and I just need to get away from it all. Thankfully I’m on my way to Osaka to meet up with an old university friend, Paul, who I haven’t seen for 10 years. I’m really looking forward to seeing him after a gap of a decade and catching up and meeting his family. First, I have to get there but Osaka is only a half hour train ride away. Kyoto runs into Osaka which in turn runs into Kobe, three cities indistinguishable from each other, with a combined population of ... read more

It has been a little while since I updated, and I apologize for keeping out of touch, but I haven't been around all that much the past couple weeks. Last week was called "Silver Week" - three national holidays back to back, from Mon-Wed. Awesome :D So I decided to take the Thursday and Friday off too, make a week of it and head to Osaka with the boy. It turned out to be an amazing time! We met up with a bunch of other ALTs there and went exploring and drinking. I will definitely need to plan a trip back. Osaka was ridiculously crowded due to the holiday, so going to places like Kaiyukan (Osaka Aquarium) was an ordeal and a half. We ended up getting on the Giant Wheel (note: apparently not a ferris ... read more

The slimy seafood dish was tasted by Dad, I watched and decided to share mine with Ted and Nobu. It is a very healthful dish, filling those who partake with energy and youthful appearance - Nobu's mom Keiko looks 20 years younger than her real age, and despite all this, I just couldn't do it. Thankfully, while Keiko was in the kitchen Ted ate my portion!... read more

The dinner at Nobu's mom's restaurant was delightful - an Okinawan restaurant in a neighborhood setting- with a spacious tatami room upstairs for parties, meetings, Karoke - Keiko is busy getting ready for the upcoming holiday celebrations. The restaurant has been open for 2 years now, and we wish her every success. During our meal, Keiko's realtor popped by for a visit - delightful gentlemen who played the Shamisen for us - even Bob joined in - this was after a round of snake liquor! After a nice evening meeting Nobu's family, we were back to Ted's apartment to get ready for our trip to Hiroshima in the morning... read more
