Ikeda City Aki (autumn) Matsuri (festival), a couple of weeks ago, was one of the best experiences of this whole trip. Simply seeing it would have been enough, but we were lucky enough to be involved in all of the rituals, and treated like special guests in being welcomed into the shrine and given a private performance from the temple girls. Just increadible. Jidai Matsuri in Kyoto with Mari and Misa (girls from the English class Amelia and I are teaching...). Hundreds of people dressed up in clothes of the different periods of Japanese history for a parade through the streets of Kyoto. Kansai Uni School Festival: Oct 31st-Jan 3rd... A festival run by students for students and the public... 300 food stalls, 5 outdoor stages, numerous classrooms housing lives of different bands, fashion parade, comedians ... read more

Idag ringde väckarklockan 6:15 i vår lilla lägenhet.

No photo with this one as a section of the Japan photos appear to have to have been mislaid, when we find them we'll post them! Our arrival in Osaka early evening took us straight to Dotonbori for dinner and a search for a suitably kitsch Love hotel. Many were entered and many were left for not being kitsch enough. We finally settled on an S&M dungeon! For those who do not know what a love hotel is, in a country of 100 year mortgages passed down from generation to generation, families living together in small houses and sex before marriage traditionally taboo, some hotels are available by the hour for the young (and those who should know better) to indulge in a romantic tryst in private. Far from being seedy places they are generally really ... read more

The journey from Hagi to Osaka was a long arduous task by bus to Yamaguchi City then the Shinkansen to Osaka. The bus journey was enjoyable with the road winding over a mountainous area until we got to Yamaguchi and then jumped on the Shinkansen to go to Osaka. Getting the tickets for the bus was easy as the hotel reception rang up and booked ahead for us so that was fine. We arrived in Osaka during the night and caught the underground to the southern area to get a hotel at the travel information office. They managed to get a hotel right next to the station that was cheap for Japan, £35pp, so we checked in and went straight out to sample the prestigious nightlife of Osaka. We started out at the train station hub ... read more

Kick starting my No-More-Self-Imposed-Exile with a Bang!... ...Or at the very least, some smooth beats and a bit of a boogie. Chafing at the bit, I gladly accepted an invitation to see some Djs I had never heard of in Osaka. After all, it couldn't be worse than what my weekend was going to hold - namely, nothing of note, and a lot of lazing around - which I have done plenty of over the last month and a half. No more! It would also be an excuse to take my new camera out for a spin. Now on the other side of that weekend (and a few more), I can say that it has to have been the highlight of my 'going out' moments while in Japan. The journey there, however, was an arduous one. ... read more

So the prior entry was titled by Mike as I was getting ready to leave Fumi's apt this morning. It was in reference to how crazy the Japanese language is. Mike said he thinks that's what he sounds like to the Japanese while everyone else just sounds normal. There were also a few things that were pointed out to me that I forgot to blog about yesterday. One was a guy on the subway who I actually have some video of (if I can figure out how to post it). He was this unfortunate 20-ish year-old, dressed in a suit with a backpack, and who was soooo tired that he was falling asleep standing up. And I don't mean that he just nodded off for a minute, I mean he fell asleep. Each time he nodded ... read more
