Last nite as I was heading to the subway I passed a gray ball of fuzz in the tunnel. It was not a rat, literrally just a giant dustball, but it got me thinking about rats... You don't see rats in Japan. Oh, they're out there, just not visible. I've only seen a rat once here and this is the story: At the time I was living in Wakayama-Ken. Through my friend Shannon (a NZer) I met Shin. Shin was an aspiring guitarist living in Osaka City. He had studied English in Australia and had big plans to return and make it BIG as a rock star. Hey, we all have dreams! On this particular day, Shin had invited me to join his band's practice. Band name forgotten...band mates names, yeah, also forgotten! Except for Daisuke ... read more

i think japan can be summed up in one word... shopping. if nothing else, you can find more shopping in any corner of the city then even NYC. I have yet to find many shops with western sizes, but when i do... haha. In Osaka we stayed at the strangest hotel, where there were no bathrooms in the room, just toilets per floor, and shower rooms on the first floor... and men and women had different shower times. Apparently I was not allowed to be clean before 9am... needless to say we didnt recommend that spot to many people. One plus was this huge spa called Spa World right next to us where for $10 we could use the pool, gym, and sauna... the only way to describe this place is to think of yet another ... read more

Terminator 3D, Spider-Man 3D, Jursassik Park. Back to Future und die Achterbahn.

after our exciting day in kobe, i was up early again on sunday to go to osaka with leilani. we wanted to get some shopping done before all the sales were over and also go to america-mura. but once again, things didn't go as we planned! not that it's a bad thing, cause it turned out to be a really fun day...but in dotonbori instead of america-mura. we met at around 1 and walked to makino station. it was a nice walk, the sun was actually shining and all the snow from the day before had melted. i was really happy cause i'm so ready for spring to come! it was such a pretty day that i took a few pictures of the city on the way to the station. like i've said many times before, ... read more

hey everyone! last night a bunch of us went to osaka again! but we went to a different area, not shinsaibashi, this time. we went to umeda and the 8-story yodobashi camera store. we decided to go there because some people needed to buy things for their camera, and ben actually needed to buy a camera! so we walked to makino station and took the train to umeda from there...we also got to ride the subway again but it was sooo crowded! we were packed in there like sardines. i didn't have anything to hold on to, but i wasn't going to be moving anway cause it was so full. when we finally got to umeda everyone was starving. so we're looking around trying to find a CHEAP place to eat. lately yasui has become my ... read more

konnichiwa! i'm done with my first day of classes! it was an easy first day. i only had my spoken japanese and reading &writing japanese classes. my professors seem really nice and i think i got placed into the right level for me, so hopefully they won't be too difficult! then tomorrow i get to go to my lecture classes. i'm taking intro to japanese history and this other class called peace, development, and democratization: the asia challenge. i'm really excited about this one cause we get to go on field trips to hiroshima and visit the osaka peace museum. i heard it's a really good class and that the professor is really good. i also heard that about my other professor. but it must be true cause all the professors here seem really good. i ... read more

Osaka is bold, bright and brash. We stayed in the Dotombori area, right in the heart of party town. I have never seen such a concentration of restaurants, shops, and neon. And the architecture is bonkers. No two buildings are the same. One has a ship wrapped around it, one has a statue of liberty on the top, one has a huge ebisu face, one's in the shape of a barrel, it goes on... The perfect place to spend the weekend. We had a great Friday night, a complete contrast to our Nagasaki night out. A very British night out, but with a Japanese twist. Well, we have been away from home for five months. Unlike Nagasaki, restaurants here are easy and accessible. Lots and lots of very helpful resin food models! We found our target, ... read more
