We travelled to Hiroshima for this Thanksgiving by Shinkansen (bullet train). The 900+ km were covered in a quick 4 hours. The weather was a little bit cold and windy but we were lucky not to have any rain, which gave us some great views of Hiroshima, Myajima and Iwakuni. Hiroshima is a modern city with a "western" grid layout, which of course is all new due to the total devastating destruction in 1945. The main attractions of the city include the Peace Memorial Park which contains several monuments and the Memorial museum. The rebuild Hiroshima castle is also a nice attraction as a couple of other small museums. After this sobering experience we had a day trip to the island of Myajima, Annika loved the roaming deers but Sophia was not very keen on dealing ... read more

Yes, after last weeks adventures in the reds, greens and whites up around Fukui, I decided that I would catch the last of the season I one of the countries most famous places for viewing the Kouyou or leafs changing colour, Miyajima. Ok. Your probably getting bored of the red leaves thing by now. WELL I’M NOT SO HAH!! Don’t worry though this will be the last one about the changing leaves in Japan, the last leaves were slowly withering away down in Miyajima and the winter will therefore be truly kicking in soon. The weather gauge is hanging around he 13-degree area and has been steadily dropping recently. In fact, the temperature has managed to change by around 20 degrees in a 6 weeks, requiring a sudden scramble for the long johns, and a re-donning ... read more

Today we visited Itsukushima island (or Miyajima as it's more commonly referred to), which is a short ferry ride from the mainland (in Hiroshima prefecture somewhere, I forget). It's a quaint place, inhabited by about 2000 people who share the island with many deer similar to those we encountered in Nara. Miyajima is most famous for its floating shinto Torii shrine. Fortunately for us, it was an absolutely glorious day when we joined the throngs of tourists all making the pilgrimmage to the shrine. The shrine is huge, given that you can see it from the mainland. The size of it really hits you when you see the ant-like people taking photos next to the shrine. There were quite a few people getting married there as well, so I guess it must be popular. We ... read more

WOW - i don't even know where to start! miyajima island is too incredible to even put into words! it is a very sacred island... no trees are allowed to be cut down, so the forests are very dense... and noone is allowed to give birth or die here, so there are no hospitals or cemeteries! so... mum and dad had stayed on the island on tuesday night and, after a slight hiccup trying to find the ryokan in the pitch black, finally enjoyed a very traditional meal and rested comfortably on their futons! the next morning, i got the train to hiroshima and then the ferry to miyajima to meet them... i had LOTS of people talking to me and asking me where i was from etc. so i was keen to tell them all ... read more

Although I do enjoy blogging with mini-history lessons or amusing anecdotes, I figure a mini guide is perhaps more entertaining to describe my time in Japan. Plus, I think the heat short circuited my short term memory erasing any random facts or dates in history I would have tried to remember and force feed you on this blog. 1. Feed deer in Nara or Miyajima at your peril. The trouble begins when you run out of deer cookies. Cost of ticket to Nara. 960 yen (from Osaka). Cost of Deer cookies. 150 yen. Watching a japanese boy flee from 15 hungry horned deer and almost pee his pants. Priceless. side note: Some of those small baby deer would conveniently fit into your side satchel to make a great balcony pet in your one room apartment or ... read more

... read more

So I made it to Japan Finally...There was a festival on in Kyoto so i decided to go straight there and skip Osaka after losing 2 days due to flight cancellations and delays. As usual did very little planning and so had not booked any accommodation so with no surprise they was fully booked and so was most of the cheap budget hotels....Hmmmmm!!! Luckily they offered to let me stay in there communal area ( a Japanese Style lounge that changed into bedroom after 11pm) I wasn't the only one Martin was in the same boat....Luckily we got on really well and decided to go to Temple lodging in Koyasan. Actually it was much nicer than staying in the dorm room but you had to get up early at 7:30 when it is open to the ... read more

Meiyajima ofzoiets The shrine of Miyajima is 'selected' by the japanese as one of the three most scenic places of japan. well, then we had to see this... Many tourists but nice view (only with high tide, otherwise quite muddy). 30 minutes from hiroshima central station.

We got up early on Sunday (7am, after a 2am bed after the football) and made our way to Miyajima, a mountainous sea island to the south of Hiroshima. We caught the ferry and first saw the Oh-Torri, the world famous dedication of love. We then went to the local temple and caught sight of a traditional Japanese wedding taking place there and a stunning location it made too! From there we made our way up the Rope Walk and a greater contrast to the hubbub of Japanese cities couldn’t be found! The cable car took us up into the mountains of the island and into such tranquillity. The transit was in two parts and the second gave the impression of being floated up to the mountaintops. We arrived at the beginning of the footpath ... read more
