If I had to pick the solemnest day of this trip, this would be the day. For a majority of the day, we explored the Atomic Bomb Museum and grounds where, at World War II's breaking edge, the United States dropped two nuclear bombs on Japan; one in Nagasaki and the other in Hiroshima. The tour begins in the museum where numerous stories are told and pictures are hung out to paint a clear image of the atrocity and horror that a bomb can cause. At the start of the museum is a large room with descriptions of different areas of Hiroshima. Each description tells how the city was a hub for the economy; shops lined the streets, cars overflowed the roads, and people lived in harmony. Then, under these descriptions, are the effects after the ... read more

En persze a japan reggelit valasztottam, mivel a masik kettot otthon is elfogyaszhatom. Hiroshima was an awesome experience. The city is well rebuilt, but does not let it's past fall by the wayside. We spent our last night out at the Japanese Arcades playing a lot of interesting video games, which is a huge passtime in Japanese culture. Today we were back on the road, this time to an island outside of Hiroshima called Miyajima. This island contains a very famous Japanese icon..the floating torri gate. We took a ferry over to Miyajima and stepped onto the island only to be surrounded by deer. These deer would eat anything! They were coming after the papers in our hands and though they got a couple of edges, I was luckily able to keep my map of the island safe from them. With the tide out, we made our way down ... read more

Came highly recommended to visit, when we were in Hiroshima. So we caught the train (and ferry) out to Miyajima - one of Japan's three most scenic spots (honestly - that's what their brochure says!). Miyajima is a small island with a few shrines, one in particular is quite large and has a torii out in the water (until the tide goes out). In fact the temple is over water when the tide is in. The island is lovely and also full of deer - with plenty of warnings about making sure the deer doesn't eat your passport. something we laughed at until we same the deers trying to eat anything near them - your cloths, plastic bags, camera straps... The main shrine - the Itsukushima Shrine was first built in the sixth century, then redone ... read more

Have I got some stories to tell today! Brace yourself, this is really good blog material, and not in the least exaggerated as many may believe me to be!........ The ritzy digs of the AGUNESU hotel (Agnes hotel) were worth their weight in quality sleep, Japanese TV travel programmes, and toilet privelidges..........I tried my very first bidet, yes I was a newby to this invention, and I have to say have not really developed a taste, or feel should I say, for it! There was so much scope for flow changes, pressure changes, temperature changes, duration....you realyl if you wanted could sit there all day and have your backside preened and pampered onsen style.....I digress.... It was wet in other ways however. Tokushima is at the mouth of the naruto straits, and had I ventured out ... read more

We took the train and ferry from Hiroshima today to the lovely Miyajima Island. A big shinto shrine to visit with its tori gate floating in the sea to greet us. We then enjoyed a cable car ride up Mt Nisen(?) to see wonderful views of the Inland Sea that would have been so much better with out the smog!!! Then a very steep walk back to the township down what must have been 2000 steps. Lots of small temples and shrines about the island. Tonight Inge and Rodney have headed off alone as I type this, while I enjoyed trying to converse with some locals in a sushi bar. Not a big sushi eater but this was super fresh. Eating out is very reasonably priced here if you are careful. Around $7-12 for a good ... read more

It was 530m high and 30 degrees so we were very pleasd with ourselves!! Also the island has loads of tame deer and monkeys which they are keen to tell you are wild animlas but do actually eat from your hand!! Well the deers do but we didnt actually see any monkeys!! Itsukushima, or popularly known as Miyajima (shrine island) is home to Itsukushima Shrine a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The shrine is built on boardwalks and during high tide appears to be floating on water. The giant red torii (gate) with Mt.Misen in the background is considered to be one of the three best views in Japan. Besides stunning views and a beautiful temple, Miyajima hosts a population of tame deer and wild monkeys and has a long ropeway up the mountain. After some souvenir browsing, oyster sampling and typical tourist shoots with the torii we decided to climb up Mt. Misen. The climb takes a little over 90 minutes and winds up the mountain through almost virgin forests along side a mountain stream. Leaving the tourist town and traveling up the steep steps and paths was ... read more

Ahoj.

On our second day in Hiroshima, we had planned to visit Shukkeien Garden and then spend the rest of the day on the island of Miyajima. Me and Lani were up early at 9 AM so that we could get an early start on the day's activities. We had told the others to be ready by 11, but the two of us decided the night before to leave at 10 instead to make sure we got enough time in Miyajima. So we knocked on the guys' door and woke them up, which they weren't too happy about...but hey, we had a schedule to stick to! When everyone finally woke up and got ready, we checked out of the hostel at around 10:30 and went to catch the tram to reach Shukkeien Garden. Shukkeien Garden was absolutely ... read more
