Day 15... (How cool will it be when that says day 389...) This morning we went over to the Peace Park in Hiroshima where we saw the A-bomb Dome, left as a reminder of the effects of nuclear war and the Peace Bell which we rang. We spent the rest of the morning wandering around the Peace Memorial Museum which told the story of pre, during and post the A-bomb drop. This is a really well put together museum and well worth a visit even if you leave feeling a bit sad. After picking up our bags, a tram and a train later we were on the ferry to the island of Miyajima. Stepping onto dry land we immediately got some light relief from a thought provoking mornning as we saw the many deer wandering ... read more

After a rejuvenating night of business hotel sleep, my friends and I descend to the Hotel Regalo's restaurant area for our free breakfast. Miso soup, rice, and salad anyone? I am quite pleased with tea in hand, as flurries still fall from the sky through a picturesque window setting, displayng the kawa (river) that splits Hiroshima in two. Miyajima is an island 40 minutes outside the city by train. a short ferry ride will grant you entrance to this island full of wild deer, Shinto shrines, and okonomiyaki restaurants. It just so happens that I love okonomiyaki and wild deer, so I was happy as can be! We rented bicycles to cruise around the various international communities of tourists. The large red gate at the waters edge marks the entrance to a booming shrine originally built ... read more

While in Hiroshima, we spent a day at Miyajima, one of Japan's three most scenic views. It is most famous for Itsukushima Shrine, which, together with its large wooden torii (gate), stands in the ocean during high tide. Deer move around the island freely, and so do monkeys on top of Misen, the island's highest mountain. We visited two out of Japan's three most scenic places (nihon sankei) during this trip. The three most scenic places, selected several centuries ago, consist of Matsushima, Miyajima and Amanohashidate. ... read more

Nils got woken up by my knock on his door as he'd told me to do the night before. I came in to wait until he was ready and we walked over to the tram we needed to take. Before getting on we stopped for breakfast and I translated the set from Japanese English to normal English aas the woman told it to me so I could tell him. Once on the tram Nils figured out we could buy our day pass from the conductor - saving us a bit of time and money. We took the ferry and got off at Miyajima. He laughed at all the deer around and the people playing wtih them. Some of them being stupid and others not (the people that is). Some little kids were crying at these huge ... read more

We took a ferry to Miyajima Island, not far from Hiroshima. This sacred island is the home of the Itsukushima-jinja Shinto shrine and its famous floating Torii gate (it is in the water, rather than on land). This was because in ancient times, people weren’t allowed to set foot on the island and so entered the shrine by boat through the gate. People still aren’t allowed to be born or die here. We walked through the shrine which had a lot of alcoves of worship, and a ton of children practicing their artistic skills by drawing the buildings around them. It looked much better when the tide was in and the place was surrounded by water. We took a cable car most of the way up Mt. Misen and climbed the 15 or 20 minutes to ... read more

Well this is a long entry. If you're short on time, skip down to the part about matsuyama (dirty old man on bicycle), you will probably find that the most amusing. 've just returned from some travelling on my own around Japan for a few days. It turns out that I have still retained some memory of the language and writing from studying Japanese in high school for two years back in 1995. Yeah. Pretty amazing, I can say things like, its hot, its ... read more

July 8 So I woke up this morning in Hiroshima, and it was pouring down raining all morning so I decided to take my time leaving. I ate another really delicious breakfast at the YH and sat around talking to other guests. Most of them were the same people I had met the day before. They were all pretty cool. I also forgot to finish my laundry so that took a bit as well. After leaving Hiroshima, I went to Miyajima. Miyajima is famous for the large orange otori(gate) that stands out in the bay. It’s pretty famous. You may have seen it before. Anyways, I took a ferry over to Miyajima, saw the temple there and the otori, and then hiked up the mountain that was there. I couldn’t find a place to store my ... read more

Okay, get ready for it, this is going to be a bit of a marathon, but if you get tired reading it, imagine me cramming it all into one weekend. Miyajima Miyajima is a small island off of the coast near Hiroshima. It is home of the 3rd most photgraphed sites in Japan- the Itsukushima Shrine gate- I think I made it number 1 on the weekend the amoutn of photos I took!!! It is a very sacred island because of this shrine and therefore noone is allowed to die or give birth- there are no hospitals or cemetaries on the island- even though the population is over 2,000 and there is a school and kindergarten! It is also forbidden to cut down any trees, and so most of the island is covered in forest. We ... read more
