Konnichiwa from Hiroshima and Miyajima!! Hiroshima, probably one of the most famous cities in the world, needs no introduction. We thought to ourselves, what are we going to see? It has been 70 or so years since the tragidy ccured. Will there be old relics of twisted steel, concrete, and rock? Will there be no plants around, no animals, no life over the bombsite? Thankfully our first encounter with Hiroshima revealed a bright and busy metropolis. Tons of shopping, food, parks, and of course museums. In the center of the city lies a large park. Within the park lies the memorial site, the a bomb dome, and the museum. When you first see the A-bomb dome site, it is hard to realize what happened there. What did it look like before the bomb, after the bomb, ... read more

This is a city which everyone knows of - just over 60 years ago the Americans ensured this city would go into history books, when they dropped the worlds first atomic bomb onto the city and its citizens. I was very keen to get to Hiroshima and it was on my must do list. I'm not sure why but there is something that has always got me about this city - well that's a dumb thing to say, I know why - it is the same reason we all know it. But I guess the total destruction, the loss of innocent lives, the pain and agony that must have gone through - all due to one item, and at a time when I guess that type of destruction was unknown. I still can clearly remember learning ... read more

Jestem pod wielkim wrazeniem Hiroshimy! jest to miasto, ktore sie podnioslo, choc zadany cios byl smiertleny. Udalo im sie odbudowac miasto, udalo im sie powrocic do zycai i cieszyc sie zyciem.

Nagoya, 31st July 2008 We left Hakuba in the morning for Nagoya, a stop only made to hunt out the Nagoya branch of the No.1 Travel office to book our flights out of Japan. After waiting around the office for a good few hours, we managed to get our flights sorted (Japan - Hong Kong and Hong Kong - Ho Chi Minh City) and then headed out for some dinner, a wander around Nagoya city and then back to the hotel we’d booked for an evening of playing around in the complimentary kimonos! Not the most exciting of days, but definitely necessary. Hiroshima, 1st - 2nd August 2008 Hiroshima, the city where the first ever atom bomb fell in 1945 is a beautiful spaced out city that understandably promotes peace in a world full of violence. ... read more

Jessie and I don't consider ourselves travelers. We're home bodies, generally content to stick close to what we know. However, because we realize this, we often find ourselves (especially in Japan) stepping out of that comfort zone in order to experience new things. We had been planning to take a trip, alone, to some far off place in Japan since our arrival here, and having saved up enough money we finally got a weekend that looked good, and we took off to Hiroshima. Now, many tourists consider this stopping point in southern Japan a must-see site. But, when we told some of our Japanese friends about our plans, the response was "Why do you want to go to Hiroshima?" Our answer:"There's a lot of recent history there." -- a simplistic answer to an uncomfortable question. But, ... read more

We arrived into Japan on the 21st of May and took the bullet train staight for the ancient capital, Kyoto. On our first day of temple hopping I was very excited to see so many Geisha walking around, at first when you see their beautiful kimonos and pail faces you feel like they are almost alien to this fast moving motropolise, however, you quickly learn that in Kyoto they are a large part of the landscape and they are actually very sweet and approchable. They giggle alot! On our second day in Kyoto we headed for a fantastic monkey reserve where after a fairly steep mountain walk you are surrounded by friendly Japanese monkeys. We were able to feed them and even got very close to a mother and baby which was born only three days earlier! ... read more

An early start to get our first taste of genuine japanese gardens and what are beautiful sight the Shukkei gardens are. We then wandered to the Hiroshima Castle, a 1950s replica of the original with an interesting museum inside. Then we strolled on to the A-Bomb dome, Peace Memorial Park, Flame of Peace and Children's Peace Monument. All very moving but particularly the kids' monument given that there was a school group singing there. Many children still make origami cranes of all sizes and place them at the monument in recognition of a girl who died from leukemia after the bombing. Before she died she tried to make 1000 cranes hoping it would bring her good luck. Alas she died at 10 years of age. We then walked back to the hotel, so a good 6kms ... read more

Hiroshima was the first city in History to have an A bomb dropped on it. The American bombers dropped the bomb on the August 6, 1945. The bomb exploded 500 meters in the air, so never actually hit the ground. Up until then Hiroshima was one of the only cities in Japan not to receive any bombings during WW II, until that eventful day that is. The bombers used an area where two bridges met that formed a T shape as their target. The A bomb dome building, the only building in the area that was left to remind the people of the world what a terrible thing happened here. You can see from the photos the before and after shots of the building. Everybody in the building that day died. Hiroshima was a relatively new ... read more

We had our first Shinkansen (bullet train) experience today. Clean, on time, fast, graffiti-free. Pretty similar to Melbourne trains really. Four hours to Okayama then a transfer to shoot through to Hiro. Checked in to our very lovely spacious japanese ryokan style hotel with plenty of space to spread out. Then out to check out downtown and have a traditional local dish, Okonomiyaki - a pancake made with soba noodles, bacon, egg, bean shoots, etc etc. Very yummy. We had these at a building that has about 20 cafes specialising in them. We then checked out the local bar scene. Hundreds of tiny, hidden away bars that only seat about ten peple at most. We peeked in lots but didnt hang out in any.... read more
