So far now I have made it to the Hiroshima city, it is amazing to see the destruction that the A-Bomb has created and how the city has rebuilt and dedicated to peace now! I don't have much time so quickly, I put some pictures up on http://www.flickr.com/mikebos84, but didn't have time to put captions before the internet time ran out. It will run out again soon so take care!... read more

I don't think a trip to Japan would be complete without a visit to either Hiroshima or Nagasaki. The horror inflicted on those 2 cities have unquestionably changed the world we live in. Understanding what happened and why is an important lesson which probably doesn't get the attention it should. Both are cities that have hundreds of years of history, but will forever be remembered instead for single events which occured on August 6 and 9 of 1945. Since that time, the cities have rebuilt themselves and life has resumed normalcy, for those who were not affected anyway. Both cities have chosen to build museums and memorials to bring attention to what happened on those days, the lead up to it, and the aftermath. More importantly, the museums and the memorials surrounding them appeal for peace ... read more

In 2006 I visited Hiroshima for the first time. After only a couple of days there the city had left enough of an impression on me that it was one of the two places in Japan I requested to live. I didn’t get to live there, but I was lucky enough to visit again with more time to spare. This time I was able to check out the downtown, Hiroshima Castle and the Peace Museum, all of which I missed before. I love Hiroshima. The city is aesthetically pleasing to me and I have always found the people to be upbeat, friendly and helpful. It is almost unbelievable that the city was obliterated a little over 60 years ago. Hiroshima Castle was the first stop on the list this time. My friend and I went straight ... read more

Well I've been very busy and haven't had time to do my blog. So I'll try to tell you about my last days in Japan. In Hiroshima, we went to a museum that was about an atomic bomb that hit Japan, it was sad and I felt like crying. We also visited Miyajima Island, we went by ferry. There were lots of deer. I called one Big Bully. It had it's horns cut off. After Hiroshima we stayed in Kyoto. We visited temples and castles and lots of gardens with even more cherry blossom. Himeji Castle was really big, we walked to the top and it was a great view. The people looked really little. At Osaka we went to the aquarium. I saw whalesharks, penguins, sharks and big stingrays. It was great! We also went ... read more

Moving on from Hakone to Hiroshima was a huge travel day involving buses, bullet trains and tramway. Our accomodation was at Ikawa ryokan. It was a more modern style ryokan, rooms are more hotel like, but still sleeping on the floor Japanese style. It is in a great location with everything in easy walking distance. Visiting the A-Bomb dome and Hiroshima Peace Park gave us a good understanding of what happened during the bombing and the devastation it caused. The Children's Peace Memorial with its paper cranes was particularly touching. We also visited the Hiroshima Memorial Peace Museum, which was quite confronting, especially for the children. Carl, Jack and Maddy went to see a game of baseball, the local team (The Carps) were playing, and lost. By all accounts the entertainment was more in watching the ... read more

Hi guys! Yesterday, we went to the A-bomb dome. It looks pretty well structured considering it nearly got destroyed by the A-bomb. We also went to the Hiroshima peace memorial museum. It was pretty sad, so I don't really feel like typing about it. Also yesterday, I went to my first ever baseball game. It was great, but I think I watched the crowd more then the game. The reason being, the crowd do really cool chants, and at one point, they all blow up these special balloons, and once the inning was over, they let them go into the sky. They made a really funny noise. In the end, the Carps ( That was the local team that was playing ) lost. Darn! Today, we went to Miyajima Island. It has heaps of wild deer. ... read more

On our first day in Hiroshima, we were so hungry after looking around the Peace Park that we decided to go find something to eat before we did anything else! We saw golden arches in the distance, so we started walking that direction. We figured that where there's a McDonald's, there's usually other places to eat. So we walked all the way down there only to find a McDonald's and this place called Coco's Restaurant. Since we didn't want McDonald's we went into Coco's and were waiting to be seated. It was a western style restaurant, but the prices wer ea bit high and the portions were really small. So we decided to go find something better! We ended up wandering around the streets for about 15 minutes, not finding any place to eat anywhere. Finally ... read more

I was so lucky that I got to spend this past weekend in one of my favorite cities in Japan...HIROSHIMA! The trip was part of my Peace, Development, & Democratization class, and my professor, Dr. Scott, had arranged for one of the last survivors of the Hiroshima bombing to speak to us. So this really was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I was so fortunate to be able to experience it. I had been to Hiroshima once before, when I came to Japan with the DENSO exchange program when I was 16, and I had fallen in love iwith the city back then. I just remember looking out my hotel window at the Peace Bridge crossing over the rivers and being amazed by how beautiful a sight it was. I couldn't believe that this same city had ... read more
