The night bus from Tokyo to Hiroshima was fantastic, probably the best bus I have ever taken. The seats recline and there is lots of leg room; they even provide you a blanket! So considering it was 11 hours over night, I slept pretty well. But then I got lost on the way to the hostel and wandered around town for a while with all my bags until I finally found the right building. I still couldn't get into my room until after 3pm, though, so I dropped my bags, had a cup of tea and called home. All I really wanted to see was the Peace Museum and the bomb site, and nothing was open yet because I had arrived so early in the morning. Once I felt a little rested I set out on ... read more

We spent a poignant day at Hiroshima learning about the gastly aftermath of the bombing on 06 August 1945. The museum was a moving experience conveying the needless loss and suffering in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Although the history is upsetting and hard to comprehend it is an important place to visit and we were impressed how the museum teaches and informs visitors about the event, nuclear technology and world affairs in an objective manner. ... read more

I spent my first night in Hiroshima drinking in the hostel with three Austrailians that I was sharing a room with. We got a bottle of Saki between us, because none of them had tried it before. I don't think I'll be rushing out to buy another. We spent the night playing games. They showed me Uno and I showed them Othello. Hiroshima seems like quite a cool city, there's a lot going on and it seems like it has quite a vibrant night-life, but I guess it's hard to come here and not spend the day immersed in the city's horrific past. I spent the day at the Peace Park and A-Bomb Museum, it was quite an emotional affair and there was a couple of times that the room got a little dusty. First off ... read more

"Not everything you do is going to be fun" were the words of a Dutch lady in the hostel before we headed to Nagasaki Peace Park and we knew that, we just hadn't put it into words, it's hard knowing you are going somewhere that will upset you. Visiting Nagasaki and Hiroshima has been extremely moving and thought provoking; the foremost thought being how was this ever allowed to happen and a hope for the future that no-one will ever have to see such an atrocity ever again. Tens of thousands of voices fell silent in one second of the A-bomb exploding, within three seconds tens of thousands more cried out no longer; the same four seconds happened in Nagasaki three days later. Both museum's give a balanced view of events without portraying a victim or ... read more

The past couple weeks have flown by here in Japan and we have seen a lot of the country and are loving experiencing true Japanese culture. Our Japanese Rail pass has proven to be worth the money as we have used it everyday and it has saved us a ton of time on getting to places as we are able to take their Shinkansen bullet trains which travel at speeds of 285km/hour! We heard of this city that is nicknamed Ninja Town and being in their country of origin and the liking the thought of visiting a place where the actions of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Nurtles were founded we figured it was only appropriate to visit this town and the museum. In Japanese history a ninja is a warior trained in the martial arts and ... read more

Laurie: In Hiroshima we are staying at an International Youth Hotel (cause we are still young at heart) which was great as it was on 8th floor with a great view over the city and it had a private bathroom and shower. I hadn’t realised how much I missed that. This is the first place since India that we had a private bathroom. What luxury. It also has broadband internet in the room for free. So we can catch up on blogging and life. Going to the Peace Park and Memorial was deeply disturbing as you might expect. There were thousands of people there everyday. Especially Japanese school students. Most of it I knew but what I wasn’t sure about was whether it was justified. I now believe that it was completely unjustified. 1) it was ... read more

We left Tokyo on the Shinkansen with our destination being Hiroshima via Kobe. The journey straight to Hiroshima was only around four hours so we wanted to stop off at Kobe for some food and jump back on the next train and make it to Hiroshima by early evening. As usual the train was exceptionally good and we made it to Kobe for something to eat (Kobe Steak) and then get back on board and head towards Hiroshima. We got there around 6pm and took a taxi to the centre of town as the station is situated in the outskirts of the city. We had not arranged a hotel and found it extremely difficult to get one but on the tenth attempt we found a hotel next to the river. I would strongly recommend booking ahead ... read more

(Day 184 on the road)Hiroshima greeted me with a slight but constant drizzle, which seemed somehow to be the perfect setting for this city with its tragic history. From Mt. Fuji, I had taken a bus to Tokyo, where I spent a night in one of the famous Japanese capsule hotels. I had wanted to do this for a long time, and it was quite an experience. The space inside my capsule was considerably smaller than in my tent, and I felt like being in a sarcophagus - definitely not for the claustrophobic! On the bright side, it had a TV and was much warmer, so I am not complaining. The next day, I took an overnight bus to Hiroshima, my last stop in Japan as it turned out. Hiroshima (with the pronunciation on the second ... read more

Konnichiwa from Hiroshima and Miyajima!! Hiroshima, probably one of the most famous cities in the world, needs no introduction. We thought to ourselves, what are we going to see? It has been 70 or so years since the tragidy ccured. Will there be old relics of twisted steel, concrete, and rock? Will there be no plants around, no animals, no life over the bombsite? Thankfully our first encounter with Hiroshima revealed a bright and busy metropolis. Tons of shopping, food, parks, and of course museums. In the center of the city lies a large park. Within the park lies the memorial site, the a bomb dome, and the museum. When you first see the A-bomb dome site, it is hard to realize what happened there. What did it look like before the bomb, after the bomb, ... read more
