Today was pretty similar to other days so we decided to change things up and walk a different route. We headed to BunakenVillage and walked along the beach. A local guy stopped to chat. He was originally from Sheffield, but packed up and moved to Manado for the lifestyle. He was very friendly and seemed to be enjoying life. It doesnt seem to matter when or where we walk, every time we bump into one of the dive guides, Demsy. Today he was on the beach chatting with mates/ family / friends. People obviously come to Bunaken for a holiday, whether this a diving one or not. It surprises me though how many want everything to be the same as at home. For example, at the resort you can make tea and coffee whenever you like. ... read more

The dives today were both fun. The first one had a strong current but instead of trying to slow down we just let it take us. It was like flying. Then we spotted a black tip shark. It was quite a big one probably 150-170 cm. On the second dive we swam with a turtle for a while and also saw a sting ray. It rained in the afternoon and as it was Sunday we decided to have a lazy one.Harriet tried to persuade Toby to pay her huge amounts to eat a chilli. She then touched her eye and had to have an eyebath. Hint- dont put chili in your eye. It hurts! When we go on our walks we see the same things each day as there is only one road. We often have ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Sulawesi » Bunaken National Park July 7th 2012

We have got into a regular lifestyle here now. We wake and go for breakfast, then make 2 dives. After diving it's time for lunch and a rest followed by a snorkel along the reef, a walk and a game of cards. Then dinner and bed. Today we didn't manage the game of cards because we spent so long snorkelling. It was fantastic though - there is so much to see on the reef. I almost like it more than diving because it is so quiet. There is no air noise and in the current you can float along making no effort. New people are turning up everyday. Today we had a new diver called Mike who lives in Altrincham. I remember Altrincham very well as we used to go ice skating there when I was ... read more

We woke at 7.15am ready for our 7.30am breakfast. Harriet pointed out that it is just like being on camp except you have to wake yourself not have a teacher do it for you. Today's dives were lucky point and turtle city. The turtles at turtle city were huge. One small one swam right by Fiona. Toby was having a few issues with signals under water. Again Fiona and Harriet messed up their breathing laughing! He thinks he is learning too many languages - Indonesian, Spanish- in preparation for Argentina, and diving. Harriet has decided to give him pop quizzes for the rest of the day. We decided to take an easy afternoon reading, writing and sleeping, but at 4pm it was time for the daily walk. We have settled into a bit of a rhythm ... read more

The food at Seabreeze is very predictable. Every morning there are pancakes, cereal, eggs and noodles or rice. Lunch and dinner consist of rice, vegetables, chicken, fish and tofu. Luckily however predictable it is, it is still delicious. They are supposed to be served at set times but we have decided it is not worth getting to the restaurant in any hurry as no one here seems to work to the clock. Everything just happens at the speed it happens. Meals are often held up due to the lack of power. It's hard to rely on the electricity being on at any time. We dived 2 dives again today. The first was a terrible experience as the current was so strong. We were banging into each other or the reef the whole time. In the end ... read more

It's funny how a day that is celebrated by another country is still the first thing you think of when you realise it is July 4. However we had no American celebrations - today was purely Indonesian with a Queensland twist. We set off for our first dives straight after breakfast. Seabreeze has built a new dive centre and we headed down there to be kitted out with all we needed. We had brought some of our own equipment but hired BCDs and wetsuits. Then we jumped on the boat and set off to lukuan dua which means corner 2. The boat is small but easily able to accommodate the 7 divers. There were 3 guides so we dived together as a family group with Anda. After an hours rest we moved to timur - east ... read more

The hotel in Manado wasn't the flashiest, but it was clean enough and had aircon. We all slept ok and were ready to get to Bunaken. Breakfast was included so we got Harriet some more nasi goreng. Toby tried the chicken porridge but wasn't a big fan. Then we packed up and headed to the port. There was no need to search out a boat as the owners accosted us before we got there. We haggled on price a bit and then three English guys asked if they could share with us. After some more negotiating, which was a slow and sedate type of bartering we agreed a rate and set off. The boat was large, but a little flimsy. We were surprised yet pleased to see there were life jackets on board. We were also ... read more
