When you are on a beach, there is nothing but sunshine, blue skies and cool ocean waves surrounding you... what would you do? Soak it in? Us too!!! Since the last blog we didn't really do much other than eat, sunbathe and sleep so there isn't a whole lot to write about. One thing, or person I guess, that definitely makes it into this blog is Fernando, our new Brazilian friend!! He is this energetic friendly guy who loves to surf, loves his wife, loves playing the ukelele, loves travelling and all around loves life!! It was awesome just sitting around shooting the shit with him when he wasn't out in the waves. He speaks four languages and has been to some absolutely amazing places. We were so happy to have met him. Plus he is ... read more

We've got some time before heading out to get some food and watch the beautiful sunset so I figured I would catch everyone up! As you know, the first night of Kuta was um, long... and that meant the following day was an absolute right-off. We didn't get out of bed until around noon and laid by the pool the majority of the day. We heard Kuta had fantastic sunsets so we ventured out to the beach just in time to see the magnificense! Fantastic is right! At this point I think we have seen more sunrises than sunsets simply because of the early wake up times for every thing we did on Java, but this was the first great sunset and it was just gorgeous. The tide was out much farther than it had been ... read more

Nusa Lembongan We caught the Scoot fast boat to Nusa Lembongan, an Island just off Bali and spend the next 2 ½ hours being jolted across the ocean with 2 meter swells. Just little ripples to us after a dinghy ride in 3 meter swells followed by a catamaran ride in 5 meter swells in Fiji last year. But to the lady who slouched against Carl the entire trip komotosed whilst vomitting and groaning - it was hell. We transferred from the Scoot boat into a smaller wooden boat to ride onto the beach, and as we approach Jungutbatu Bay I notice how the sea would rise in front of us and create tiered ledges as it moved towards the beach and then turned into ginormous waves. There were great big floating platforms in the bay ... read more

We used Perama boat to travel from Sanur to Nusa Lembongan. Perama company organize transport around Bali and the island. Cost effective and reliable, it is also possible to have some discount (10% off in majority) for every travel made with them. The journey is about 1 hour. Hopefully the sea wasn’t too bad. Through Wikitravel we organised a stay at Swara Homestay. New opening in 2012 with only 3 rooms. Due to misunderstanding and/or mis-communication, we had to find another place to stay for just 1 night. We were happy to finally stay at Swara as Made has been during our stay a great host. Always smiley and laughing, he has been genuine and wasn’t trying to get our money like all the others. Guesthouse and homestay are the best way to meet local people ... read more

On January 20th Aoife and I got the early boat to Nusa Lumbongan. It is an island off the Southeast coast of Bali, approximately 8 square km in size. If you are looking for an island paradise, without the tourists, the boozing and the noise of every day life this is the place to visit. We stayed at the Secret Garden Bungalows in Jungutbatu village, around 50 metres from the beach. This is a great place to stay and it is super cheap, $15 USD per night It is owned by an English couple and the local staff are very helpful. There is nine bungalows set amidst tropical gardens, each with its own veranda with table and chairs and a hammock. I spent a lot of our time in that hammock!! We also rented a scooter for ... read more

IF I HAD A VISION of what Bali would look and feel like Nusa Lembongan was it. Nusa Lembongan, a small island of the southeast coast of mainland Bali has stunning beaches with crystal clear water and misty views of Gunung Agung (Bali’s largest volcano). Seaweed farmers in straw hats lay their wares out to dry on the beach, roosters crow, stray dogs roam, young kids zoom by on motorbikes, and bright orange temples blast Balinese Hindu ceremonial songs from their speakers. And best of all, the locals far outnumber the tourists. As we climbed off the boat in Nusa Lembongan I noticed a man holding a sign with the name of our hotel “Star Two Thousand” on it. Underneath the hotel name the word “KLERYAL” was written. I had called ahead for a pick-up from ... read more

Geo: -8.68333, 115.433 Nusa Lembongan is a small island about 4 miles long and 1 to 2 miles wide, close to the larger island of Nusa Penida, and 12 miles from the mainland, but a world away from the bustle of Bali. I think this is how Bali used to be 30 to 40 years ago. There isn't a jetty so it is necessary to jump out of the small ferry boat into the sea. I did worry about our cases but the boatmen managed to keep them dry. There is a village on the beach and the few small hotels and hostels are dotted throughout the village and at a couple of other beaches. We are staying at Mainski Resort which does not have free wifi or hot water as claimed on it's website but ... read more
