Sam's turn to write: Sometimes conversation with people here can be downright silly. We don't speak Indonesian (much) and they generally don't speak English (much). We met an Indonesian fellow on a bus in Jogja who insisted his name was "Adam". Here's an excerpt: Adam: (pointing to a large grocery store) "Dis es place foh shopping. You like shopping?" Me: "Well...yeah. I kind of do like to go grocery shopping." Adam: (long pause. Blank stare. He didn't understand) Adam: "You like shopping?" Me: "...Yes..." Adam: (looking very pleased now) "Why do you like shopping?" Me: "....well...I guess I like to buy food and spices to cook with" Adam: (smiles and nods. I'm pretty sure he didn't understand) (a horse drawn carriage rolls by) Adam: (pointing to the horse) "You like horse?" Me: "...uh..." (sure, why not, ... read more

After a hectic week or so in Kuta we decided that it was time for another slice of island life. There are not too many options around Bali itself and as we only have a week left in Indonesia we decided on the near by island of Nusa Lembongan, famous for its awesome surf breaks, all of which have very appealing names like ship wrecks and lacerations……. Needless to say we didn’t try our hands at surfing as it was well out of our league! Nusa Lembongan is also well known for its diving, with one dive site in particular being the most popular - Manta point! After reading this needless to say I (Andrew) was utterly convinced it was the place for us to spend a few days unwinding and maybe even fitting in a ... read more

March 24-27th Stayed in Nusa Dua over Balinese New Year which involves 'quiet day' where everyone stays at home and does nothing!!! We had booked a large hotel for this reason as we didn't fancy doing nothing and having to eat crisps in our room for dinner!! At our hotel it was business as usual... the gym was open too so that was good. I won a free massage in the 'guess the weight of a melon competition' 5.125 and I guessed 5.1!!!! March 28th -29th Caught boat to Lembongan island- we got the speedboat by accident- it was the same price as the slower boat- there was some scam going on but we seemed to benefit from it. We ended up inMushroom bay which is not where we wanted to be originally but we found ... read more

Sunday, April 5th Took catamaran from Bali to the island of Nusa Lembongan today. Beautiful sailing. Arrived at the island and went snorkeling off of a floating pontoon. Beautiful coral reefs and wonderful tropical fish to see. Even feed them by hand. Went back to the island to have a wonderful buffet lunch. There was a slide that went into the salt water pool. Lunch consisted of chicken satay, prawns, fruit, salad, exquisite. After lunch went on a banana boat with Jerri, Jennifer, Brad and John. Brad,b eing the crazy man, decided to make sure that we landed in the water. Then went back to the pool for a while. Had a wonderful ride back to Bali. Large swells but didn't get seasick. Sat and watched the sunset from the lounge chair and then off to ... read more

When we got off the bus from Probolinggo in Java, we were swamped by taxi drivers...one of them got my attention by saying “excuse me miss, taxi with meter”. “Meter” is not a word which is commonly used by taxi drivers in Asia until you twist their arm. Normally we make an effort to avoid using the taxi drivers who harass you, but this guy was polite which was a nice change so we all climbed into his taxi and, amazingly, he turned the meter on. He got us to our street in Sanur easily enough, however couldn’t seem to find the hotel. He kept saying to call the hotel...which we were reluctant to do because we figured he would charge us an exorbitant amount for the phone call. However, we eventually gave in and he ... read more
