Up early - deluxe bus to ajmer at 10:00. Had brekkie (banana cornflakes) and set off. It only 2 and a half hours to ajmer and then we got on a local bus to pushkar for Rs 7 each! Went to pushkar last year and wrote heaps in my journal then... so when I finish this one (in about 2009!!), I will write that one. Did not stay in a particularly nice guest house this time (Won't put the name incase it has changed now) . There were lovely bed bugs, a strange owner and the electricity was turned off all the time, so it was boiling!) Went to see were we stayed last time (lake palace) ; loads of building work going on. Sat at sunset cafe for a while before heading back to bed ... read more

Went to jaipur last year for a few days, so saw most of the sights then... Booked our first deluxe bus tickets to Ajmer for tommorow. Spent the day in Jaipur avoiding children who were trying to pick pocket us and rickshaw wallahs who were tryng to send us the wrong way! We went to he city palace museum - which was quite expensive for india Rs 200 each; but we spent 2 hours there. We attempted to go in the Junega art gallery and modern art gallery *the modern art gallery looked closed - no westerner in sight and everyone staring at us, so we did not bother *Junega art gallery was more like a shop ,so we didn't bother! Went back to the hotel and sat in the owners sitting room to write an ... read more

Decided to leave Bharatpur, as not a great deal to do and no where to go apart from a couple of e-mail places and fed up of being the only ones there!(had definetley gone at the wrong time) We both had iffy tummies (this will be a theme for our 5 months in india!!). Had minimal breakfast- plain toast and honey toast! Set off to catch the bus- rickshaw wallahs flagged one down for us thankfully; we got the "superior bus" (Mmmm!!) The bus was Rs 90 and took 4 squashed hours. We got a rickshaw to "pearl palace"- "top hotel"; aircooled, bathroom, tv for Rs 350. Had lunch at 17:00! (had my first vege burger) . Wonderful roof top garden- lush in the evening. Bri had nowt and I had yet another tomato soup for ... read more

It was a 26 hour train journey which was quite nice if a little dirty. My stomach got a little upset towards the end, but luckily was sharing a coach with an English guy who had been to Varenasi before and got us to the guest house nice and easily. He also provided great company on the train - of which the most lively point was when a big barrel chested Sikh decided to tell the army officer on leave from Kashmir to stop drinking on the train. The army officer happened to be on the next bunk over from me so I got a good view. It looked like it could be real trouble given the number of army folk on the train, especially when many other swarthy Sikhs came down the isle. Most of ... read more

Bri's poorly day today- we are only on day 5 and delhi belly has already hit... Had our first ghekko join us for the evening last night- could sit and watch them for ages (fab!) After a late start we went for lunch at the Sunbird- had tomato soup !! and cheese pakoras. Went to the keoladeo ghana national park- hired 2 ramshackle bikes for Rs 50 and a guide for Rs 70. We saw egrets, spotted owl, several varieties of heron, 2 large stark types, kingfisher, parakeets, loads of small exotic birds, antelope, turtles (huge) , monkeys, watersnake and a minotaur lizard (it appears that we saw a lot, in reality however, if Bri and I had been on our own I don't think we would have seen anything!!!!) The guide kept taking us off ... read more

Off to Bharatpur via a local bus- it was fine, we thought its would be a nightmare. We got a room (bathroom and aircon) at the falcon guest house for Rs 200- we were the only ones staying there (infact I think we were the only people staying in bharatpur as we were out of season for the birds!) We arrived at the guest house in the middle of "prayer day"- oops! We had lunch and wandered for a while... nothing to see apart from the national park , which we plan to go to tommorow. Decided to go on the internet- it took us 2 hours and 2 computors to use hotmail! We had to order our evening meal in advance, which we did and ate at 20:00. Sat and chatted to the owner for ... read more

I got a place to stay near the train station and headed to the Golden Temple where I bumped into the Austrians right away. It wasn't too hard since the couple of tall pretty Austrian girls usually attracted a crowd so large that police would be called. They were taking a taxi to the Waghar border - India's main border with Pakistan - to watch the border closing shennanigans at dusk. I joined them to watch the guards in their dress colors frogmarching around to the cheers of the crowds on both sides of the border in the specially constructed stands (the frog marching was no joke - I saw both Pakistani and Indian Soldiers get their feet above the height of their heads). It seemed a little provocative, but I guess it is good for ... read more

I was a girl with few words at the beginning of the trip, so really said very little (my journal entries got massive by the end!!) This is what I said about the taj mahal "up at 04:40 and met the rickshaw driver who took us to the taj mahal for 0600- cost Rs 750 each- amazing though- spent 2 hours there and returned to the hotel for breakfast... a toasted cheese sandwich" There we go, not alot said at the time! I can remember it being amazing though, especially watching the sunrise. There were so few people there, I would definetley recommend it as soon as it opens up. Spent the rest of the morning treating our mozzie net and sleeping!! Went to the park restaurant for lunch- nice food. We then went to tourist ... read more

Up at 04:00 hours! Got our taxi at 05:00 hours to the railway station. Our train was an eye opener to agra (it was the express) We were given water, tea bags a vacuum flask of hot water, biscuits, newspaer and brekkie (spicy bahji, chips and peas!) all included in our price (now know where british rail went wrong!!) We decided to stay at the tourist guest house- comfortable , aircon( when it works!!) room for Rs 500 Decided to go and sight see, so we went to 1- Agra fort- impressive; actually hired a guide (oh, how things changed a year later!) 2- Itimad-ud-abulah; a maousoleum. We had dinner at the Maya restaunt (stuffed tomatos, which were very nice) - recommended by our rickshaw wallah. I then e-mailed all and sundry ( this became a ... read more

Kangra was pretty - the bus dropped me off at the main road and I had quite a walk to get to the train station. I was quite early for the train so I hung about on the platform. It was very quiet in some ways, until the sounds of the birds became clearer. It was very tropical sounding and a very relaxing interlude. The toy train was very slow and crowded (6 hours 70 km). I was hoping for a window seat, but since I didn't get on the train where it started there was no chance of this and none of the locals seemed to want to offer a tourist a chance to look out the window. After 6 very cramped hours I got to Pathenkot at 6pm and decided to stay the night ... read more
