I never really had a desire to go to India. Sure I love travelling but had heard too many horror stories about the dreaded 'Delhi-Belly'. Spending a week in a small room with only a newspaper for company was not my idea of fun. I could not have been more wrong. Delhi was awesome and I will definitely return to India. Two weeks is simply not enough time. SPORT WITHIN SOCIETY BACKGROUND It is well known that India’s national sport (obsession) is cricket, with champion players such as Sachin Tendulkar treated as living gods. Other popular sports include hockey, soccer and wrestling. An interesting game is kabbadi, which I was fortunate enough to witness on my visit to a rural village. Kabaddi, a variation of tag, involves two teams of seven in which players take turns ... read more

A group of anxious devotees wait for the word from god. Three men, who would soon be god, stand before the deity. Their faces powdered with turmeric and the tip of their long knives covered with lemons. Another devotee jumps up and down the steps frantically. Monkeys look on as the hysteria mounts. "Annaney koopidu, Annaney koopidu…", a woman screams for an oracle. Others join the chorus. An elderly woman gives them instructions. Most of the men have shaved heads and anointed themselves with turmeric. Annan is Azhakar, the local deity after whom this village, 10 km off Madurai, is named. The rituals would entice him to speak through the man and his two sons. The elder begins to sway. Then it becomes violent. He almost falls into a pit for breaking coconuts. Others hold him ... read more

Spent one night in the Thar desert and it was nice to look at the stars in a cloundless night.... First time in my life I had to make a toilet in the desert :) Small children in the villages come running upto you saying "Hello Rupees" which I thought was quite funny !!!... read more

On arrival in Delhi we checked Kristen into a room in Paraganj and then I had one of the best Thali's in India. Then pretty much straight to the airport to catch my flight to Bangkok. Kristen was heading to Varenasi before back up to Nepal to catch her flight later on. ... read more

After Kokarn we took a bus down to Fort Cochin in Kerela with a stop for most of a day in Mangalore - which had nice food and a very nice little Memorial Park put up by a Ghandi foundation. Fort Cochin was a Christian town with huge Chinese Fishing nets and some great seafood. It was all getting a little tricky since I was soon to hace to head up to Delhi to get my flight to Thailand, and Kristen was planning to stay in the South of India for a while. I thought about when to leave, and with the breakfast thought - if I see Dolphins in the bay this morning then I will book a ticket to Delhi - I promptly saw a Dolphin breach the water - there must have been ... read more

Ok, it has been quite a while, but what with Christmas and all I needed a break! After Palolem so much has happened and it has really been 99% wonderful. Kristen and I went down to Karnatka by train from Palolem. It was the superfast Kerela express from Bombay, and I think Kristen got some of my excitment about train travel. It takes me back to school travel aged 14, 15, 16 from Streatham to Dulwich and other fond memories, but she was also able to see the charm as soon as one blew past going the other direction and knocked all the air out of the carriage - or so it seems. The rhythmic sound of the tracks mesmorized her. It was however a little crowded on the actual train... ahem. It seems that if ... read more

Still heading South towards Karnataka on the way to Kerala - which at some point - given that I don't fall in love with a place and a girl at the same time means I will head back to Delhi to catch my plane to Bangkok. The beaches are beautiful here - the crescent shaped beach of Palolem where yesterday morning the moon was sitting on its side and smiling with Venus directly above was magical - one of many magical things I am struggling to write down without losing the experiencial side of it. ... read more
