Namaste, Sorry it's been too long since my last update. At times it's seems as though I have experienced a lifetime since I last wrote to you guys. India is such a wonderful place where a multitude of religions, cultures, and ideas blend together. I'm not too sure where to begin now, so i'll just continue from where I left off. After leaving the former Portugese colony of Diu, I headed to Rajasthan, which thru it's enigmatic history is known as the home of the Maharayas and the powerful Rajasthan armies. The Moghuls invadors from Central Asia knew better then to fight them so they allied with them and allowed them to keep regional control. It worked for a few centuries until some of the Maharayas rebelled and took over full control of their princely states. ... read more

Bhandasar Jain Temple In the previous blog entry we ended by writing about a very odd temple in the town Deshnoke in Bikaner district in Rajasthan. To go to that temple we passed through the city Bikaner. There we visited the Bhandasar Jain Temple, a temple with impressive wall paintings and artworks. Havelis In Bikaner there are many so called havelis, which can be described as a mansion or a townhouse in a city. The havelis are often quite spectacular buildings, heavily decorated with carved wooden reliefs and other works of art. It was interesting to see a few of these havelis. Unfortunately the streets were they were located were very narrow making it very difficult to take photos of th... read more

Namaste, I promised you an update exclusively on Diu, a lovely island that was foremerly a Portugese colony. And so I start of from Bhavanagar in Gujarat... Today was spent on a bus most of the time. I took a state bus out of Bhavanagar and towards Una en route to the island of Diu. I arrived to Una only to find out that the entire bus station parking lot was flooded in a few inches of water. The only save heaven from the water was the standing covered waiting hall, which was on a bit higher grond then the road. I waited and waited, carrying my heavy backpack as the floors were wet, until the bus arrived. There were 3 foreigners on the bus, a sight I haven't seen for a few days. Once in ... read more

When my father went "into Tea" in 1903, it was stated that new Assistants were either Engineers or Gentlemen. I hope he was a bit of both. Life was very demanding with work starting around 5 am and not finishing until late. However there was a lot of social time at "The Club" where he played polo and my mother played golf. There seemed to be a never ending round of children's parties too. As I left India in early 1930 at the age of 6, I remember very little but I'm told I spoke fluent Hindustani. For our forthcoming trip back to Assam, I tried going to a hypnotherapist to see if the language would come back ! No luck... From a temple covered with gold to a temple covered with rats After having spent the first days in Delhi and Agra we felt that we wanted to travel to some of the other places we had on our agenda for this trip. First we went to the city Amritsar. Amritsar Amritsar is in Punjab in the northwest of India, not far from the border of Pakistan. Golden Temple, Amritsar On this trip we wanted to see some of the more spectacular sites in India. The Golden Temple in Amritsar easily qualifies as a spectacular site. The Golden Temple is a holy site for the Sikhs. The central part of the temple is a building covered with gold leaf, hence the name of the temple. The Golden Temple is far more than just its grand gilded ... read more

I will always cherish my memories of our sojourn in Munnar, Kerala for its visual treats and serene surroundings. The nature lover in me easily bonded with the scenery around and left me spell bound in the beauty of the region. Our flight reached Kochi on a balmy afternoon on the 30th of June and we met our friends who were to drive with us to Munnar. As the plane was losing altitude, we got a great aerial view of Kerala below the thick cloud cover. All I remember now is my feeling that this place is β€˜too green to be true!’ Our drive up the narrow winding road was bumpy and uncomfortable yet the lush green forest outside the window more than made up for it. Rows of coconut and palm trees dotted the region ... read more

We saw more than Taj Mahal in Agra In 2004, about one and a half years before we joined TravelBlog, we travelled in India for a few weeks. On that trip we learnt that it can get very hot in India in July. And that refers mainly to the weather. Of course, the food in India was also hot. But that's true regardless of what month of the year it is so no need to point that out. When we left Sweden we had a general idea of where we wanted to go and what we wanted to see. After a few days we realised that we'd have to alter those plans slightly. The weather was too hot for us to be able to enjoy our travels. To cool off we applied the same strategy as ... read more

ENTRY 51 β€” June 27th 2004 Visa Denied Miranda and I enjoyed our last couple of years in Peachland, but had decided we wanted to travel again. We were more than a little excited by the fact that -- after going through the interview process -- I had been offered the position of Rector, St. Paul's, Paget (Photo), by the Bishop of Bermuda. This tiny island is a British Overseas Territory, self-governing, with its own constitution. The Brits take care of defense and foreign relations. We loved our island paradise: the beaches, the history and the people. The capital city is Hamilton, which is where the Bishop is located. We were told that Bermuda has one of the world's highest GDPs per capita. We were also pleased to hear that although the island is in the ... read more

The following is an unedited account to my travels thru India from June to September. I sent this writeups to my friends and family. As such it is aimed at those who know little about Indian history. Please read that last sentence, "aimed at those who know little about Indian history." So to all the veterans out there this is but my mere interpretation of what I saw in India. I'm sure you will find it biased beyond imagination so I hope I didn't insult anyone. And if I do, well stop reading . Anyway, I have not cut anything so here goes... Namaste ("hello" in Hindi), How's everyone doing? Long time now hear, I know. I write to you from India today. Mea culpa... sorry everyone...
