Very long bus journey indeed to Madurai. Well, four hours but it seemed longer as more and more people piled in and it got hotter and hotter. Luckily I was by a window so got a good breeze, poor Natalie was at the aisle and had people leaning and bumping into her the whole time. After arriving at our grubby hotel, we cleaned up, had lunch, then visited the Sri Meenakshi temple where we were shown around by a guide. Sarah got dizzy and had to sit down shortly after we went in but was okay after sitting for a few minutes and having some Mountain Dew. Think she was a bit de-hydrated as not been drinking as much water as had been. The temple was beautiful but could not see all from outside due to ... read more

Hi all, trying to upload photos. Sorry if you all got an annoying subscription email, and then no photos. I think it's supposed to be really easy, but this computer is doing some funky things, and there's a bunch of Indian men watching over my shoulder right now so I might quit before they all get uploaded. *apologetic head bob* ... read more

Not too much to say about that, it just cracked me up. It's the title of the DVD that I won for most accurately pinning the (demon) tail on Malinowski, the founder of modern anthropology (and, of course, a rather racist Imperialist too). I tried to convince my sisters that we should watch it instead of Mummy 3 the other day, but I failed. I guess Lindy Jones just didn't sound exciting enough. Not that it mattered anyway, since the power went out the moment we started watching. More on that later. So, things are good! I've been shamed into writing again by a friend who is managing to write in his blog every day. I'm not promising anything, though! I'm continuing to settle in. I wore my first sari yesterday! (Pictures coming soon, I promise. ... read more

Vanakkam everyone! I am finally in Madurai! After a very grueling three days of travel (minus the time change, but still a very long time) we arrived in Thanjavore where we stayed at a hotel and had a weeklong orientation. It was very nice there. Lots of mildly spicy food, and a nice breeze which came off the river (a river infested with sinkholes, crocodiles, and toxic chemicals, I might add). I like everyone on my group, we get along very well, and everyone seems very committed to cultural integration and awareness. We have been in Madurai for a few days now, and moved in with our host families the day before yesterday. My host family is mother, father, and two daughters, Preethi who is in her second year in Engineering school, and Babloo (that's a ... read more

Got up early in the morning to check out the temple again since Heather, Dan and Becca wanted to see the temple in daylight while John and Nikki decided to sleep little longer. After a small incident where I had to call the cops (surprisingly cops were very attentive and helpful for the tourists) we went into the temple and took tons of picture in the daylight. I would say Tanjore temple is one of the very well maintained temple in South India. Did some shopping and we headed back to the hotel in auto rickshaw since we ran out time. I got some traditional Tanjore toys for Ritika. John and Nikki were ready and waiting for us. We had breakfast got into the van and headed to our next destination - Madurai. On the way ... read more

Novel Travelling Follow the journey of books around the world and leave your own location and thoughts. For more information and to see the index of other books on this blog go to: Bob Mehew: May 20th, 2008 Where obtained: Wivenhoe, England (a present from my good friend Nina) Where read: Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India Where left: Pushka, Rajasthan, India Thoughts: This book was fascinating, intriguing, could not be put down and an emotional rollercoaster, skilly depicting life, struggling and hardship in India from several different aspects. From the families affected in the mountains of Kashmere at the time of partition, to a graphic portrayal of the horrific caste system in village India, one gets the sense that these stories are based on real experiences and have been experienced many times over. These are ... read more

Our Russ visit began in the very early hours of seventeenth February when we disembarked the night train from Trivandrum. We were met by Berlin a founding member and the current President of Russ Foundation and a number of other staff who were waiting at the various exits of Madurai’s busy mainline station looking for an English couple (had we mentioned the size of Bob's beard in advance there would have been no problem spotting us but we'd somehow omitted this detail!) After a little confusion and a couple of phone calls we eventually found each other and headed off towards the Russ campus in Chatirathondamanpatti (more commonly known as Chatirapatti!) The Russ Campus is set in beautiful grounds which look completely different to when I visited in 1995 - the trees and plants are now ... read more

Sairaana. Mitakohan sano... read more

Hello again! Cochin proved to be a good choice......not the main town, but Fort Cochin which is one of the islands of the coast there. I say Island, I think Fort Cochin is actually connected to the mainland, unlike Wellington and Viper Island which are only reachable by boat. The bus ride there was also pretty hair raising. They have some busses over here which they call 'superfast', which basically means they're stopping for no bugger. It certainly was a 'superfast' ride and you could certainly feel the breeze on this one! Luckily they had quite tall seats in the bus so unless you made a point of sitting up to look over the seat infront, you couldn't see how close to death you were actually getting, which I think on this particular journey, may have ... read more
