... at least on every single Rupie Bill. How are you folks today, hope the sun is shining wherever you are (at least in your hearts). If you don't here's some litlle update from our trip through India. We are currently hanging out in Madurai (district Tamil Nadu, South India). Another busy busy city, everybody and everything you can imagine on the streets so that we decided to escape to a quiet, honourable and antique place, the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple. Now we feel a bit closer to Shiva, Vishnu and Hinduism in general. Tony feels like a rabbit since he stopped eating any kind of meat and drinking alcohol. While this is normal to Irina, even at home, Tony finally starts to show first signs of withdrawal symptoms (Entzugserscheinung). I would pay 100 Dollars for a ... read more

Madurai On the way to Madurai we stopped for lunch and another great cooking demonstation. A chance for more street shooting for me! Then on the massive Meenakshi temple which is the second largest Hindu temple in India and visited by 10 to 30 thousand people everyday. Many seem to come for wedding photos, to sit and socialize, etc. as well as pray. Multiple towers all brightly painted. And everyone seems to be happy and love having their pictures taken except the brides who all seemed so glum faced. The best view was from the roof of an adjacent emporium where we ended up buying a child labour free Kashmiri wool carpet which may get home before us. Then on for a nerve racking rickshaw ride through the back roads and alleys of Madurai with stops ... read more

So yeah, not too much to add. I found out last night that our future planned train ride to Kovalam had very limited seating in the near future... the only hope would be to catch the train tonight, and arrive in the morning, or wait about a week until the next available seats were open, or go wait-listed, which with three people, well it keeps you a little too anxious, not knowing exactly which train we'll be able to catch next. So a train tonight it is... or was. Considering the price, we opted to go on a sleeper coach bus with A/C... basically a first class bus ride. The catch is that its about three times as much as the train, and maybe five times as much a normal bus ride (if you know what ... read more

Miss Havisham (the moniker we had affectionately given our rickshaw) was now festooned with even more tat than you could shake a stick at, it being a badge of pride to collect as much crap as possible throughout the trip. In Pondicherry we eschewed stalls of sarees to find Spencer’s Shoppe, an emporium of all things naff. Leaving nothing to chance we bought both a Ganesh (A Hindu God and ‘remover of obstacles’) and Jesus to protect us on our travels. We had also acquired throughout the rally group: Three bunches of red fake roses (one with dewdrops), in keeping with the England theme Prayer beads - which were covered in yellow sandalwood incense which covered everything it touched in then yellow powder Paper garlands An old flip flop Bunting and flags Pink curtains (Thunderbirds) Custom ... read more

John took some Cipro for his stomach last night, and all better this morning. Kevin had taken his antibiotic yesterday morning, before the train ride, and took some more this morning, and he's doing good as well. As for myself, that weird stomach feeling was nothing... didn't take anything more than a vile of the Chinese medicine my dentist recommend I pick up, and I've had no problems to speak of (I've taken that on a few occasions just as a precautionary step, so either its helping, or I was in the clear anyway; but so far I see no reason to stop using it as a precautionary medicine). Really not much else to add beyond that. We had a great vegetarian breakfast at Punjab Da Dhaba, which was both very tasty food, and at very ... read more

Well, it got Kevin, but not me, not yet. And it of curse had to happen the night before we leave at 7:30am the next morning on a train for 8 1/2 hours! Of course!!! So to make a long story short, Kevin picked up some bug that had him puking all night and feeling like he would be better off dead... but its nothing some hardcore antibiotics couldn't fix! But after looking like a ghost all night, he finally got some color back in the morning and was holding down granola bars through a bit of the day... then he got hit again on the train, but this time more likely from dehydration and a mix of the antibiotics, malaria pill, etc, as he's fine now. Of course, as I write this I feel my ... read more

Well I got hit by a small dose of the infamous stomach bug of India in last couple of days. I'm in the South Indian city of Madurai where I had only planned on making a short stop of 1-2 days and I think I'm coming up on four and most has been in my hotel room and one day mainly the bathroom. Fun, fun, fun. I had been planning on writing a blog about some of the great south indian food I had been enjoying. Maybe in a few days but right now the amazing curries and rich dishes feel like kryptonite right now. I am on the upswing though and should be moving on to Kerala tomorrow evening. Its no fun to be sick and even less fun in an unknown place by yourself ... read more

We're in Kodaikanal now, this is a hill station about 7500ft high in the Western Ghat mountains of South India. It's 9:30 pm. Got here last night. I'm at an internet cafe, not too many folks in here now. The eternal sound of Indian traffic is happening outside with the horn chatter. It's quite a change being up here vs. down in Chennai or Madurai. Lot cooler here. Quite comfortable. Great fruits like oranges, jack fruit, star fruits, green mangos with lime and chilli (yum), they even have corn here coated with chilli and lime, but it's not impressive. We're all sticking with the food of deep south India which is far and away some of the best food i've ever eaten. Today is the first time we decided to go non-vegitarian. Had some delicious chicken ... read more

I am now in my final days of work at People's Watch, and as I'll explain, things are starting to get pretty exciting just as I'm leaving. From a work perspective, I find myself wishing that I had more time in Madurai, although I'm also extremely excited to be a tourist again. First, I received a comment asking if there are any good jokes regarding the Indian police and their foibles. As it turns out, I do have a good joke, as told to me by my friend and colleague Subhra, so here goes: An international panel is formed to study police search methods. As part of their study, they request three police contingents to participate in a study: an American contingent, a French contingent, and an Indian contingent. They bring these three police forces ... read more

Well, I haven't really done any extraordinary traveling recently, but I felt the itch to write something, so here's a grab-bag of thoughts: 1. Everyday Life I haven't been taking pictures of my day-to-day life here, so the pictures on this posting will be my "Ode to the Ordinary". I know that with all the pictures of Arabian Sea Sunsets, you've been wondering where I shower, relieve my bowels, etc. Well today is your lucky day. 2. Work Work has finally started moving at a slightly quicker pace. Most importantly, Henri finally gave me a decent image of the PRODUCT towards which I'm working...very exciting indeed. Basically, there will be one National Torture Report and 9 State Torture Reports. The National Report will start with a complete overview of the National Legal Standards on torture ... read more
