Tomorrow is Ganesha's birthday. Ganesha is a very popular god here, the first one that people pray to. So if there's a big temple, there will usually be a shrine for Ganesha before the other shrines. Religion here is inseparable from everyday life and, like everything else in India, is full of colour and life. It's amazing to see how stereotypes of the old collide with ideas of the new here. People walking down the street, doing shoppping or going to work will stop to bow and pray before a shrine on the side of their street before picking up their belongings and heading on their way again. Men with the string slung across their body (a sign of a brahmin) and a dhoti (white cloth wrapped around like a skirt) will leave a temple and ... read more

Hello everyone, So for those of you who did not know, I'm in India. Surprise! I've been here for three months now and will be here for three more months until going home for one month and then returning here again. Confused? I wouldn't be surprised. Anyway, just to update you all in a series of lists really fast, here's some of my life the past three months: Cities/Towns/Villages/Tiny Places Visited/Lived in: Chennai Mangalore Bangalore Trichy Arcot Vellore Erode Madurai Dindigul Kodaikanal Ramnad Kanyakumari Nagerkoil Dharani Nagar Courtralam/Kuttralam/Kutralam Rameswaram Erode Vehicles I've Ridden In/On: Car Autorickshaw (aka: three wheeled buggies of DOOM. Try to imagine a moped enclosed in a small, usually yellow, bubble like car thing. With only three wheels. That's pretty close) Moped (Also called "Scooty." on the back) Bicycle (on the back. We had a thousand rupees left but had to leave for Chennai airport. We hadn't had dinner so decided to buy it there with the leftover cash. Taxi wasn't expensive but took ages. We had to go through to departures when we got to the teminal so checked our luggage and went through without finding food. Now surprisingly or not (I am surprised we were surprised - considering) when we got through to the 'lounge' of this major international airport there were four places to sit and 'eat'. First was an executive lounge which to enter you had to pay. Second was a 'gold card' lounge, access to which the likes of us weren’t granted (I did try using my gold visa card but that wasn't what they were looking for)! Third was another 'exec' style ... read more

Again, we had to leave Goa sometime, but unfortunately the trains didn't go when we wanted so we had to leave after just six days to get to Chennai to catch our flight. That is where we are now, in a busy city were every one seems that little bit too manic. Waiters hover over you tapping pens waiting for you to order. On one occasion the waiter slid the menus over to us, waited 5 seconds and said 'what do you want' (to read the menu-we thought)! Rickshaw drivers aren't as persistent here but we have had one follow us for about half a mile trying to tempt us with tours of the beach and city. A funny thing did happen here though. A small world situation. We were wandering around the large shopping mall ... read more

Hey Everyone, This is our last day in India and Kylie, Shari, Ryan, and Alex have decided to join me for a brief blogging session. We will try to write from Paris again but I'm not sure about the timing of the layover. There are two types of people in our group. Those who want to go home and those who don't. Jen and I are definitely in the Stay-In-India camp. We are just bummed that we have to leave all the people we met. It would be cool if everyone in Detroit got to make it over here and see the people and projects that our church supports. That's not very likely but it has definitely motivated me to give more (and more often). It's not like I'm envious of the lifestyle here, that doesn't ... read more

Hey Everybody, Ben here with my good friend, Xavier! He is an awesome brother in the Coimbatore Church of Christ and we have spent a lot of time together this week. I asked him to come online and write to all of you. We got your request to hear from more of the teens and I have Ryan here to help. It's just that after a long day of serving, most of the teens can barely stay awake through D-Group, let alone stand in line at the computer. But I will try to work it in to a devotional about taking care of your family :) Also, we do read and print all the comments and messages and pass them out at meals for all to read. All I can say is that it is not ... read more

Hey Everybody, We have gotten many requests to hear more from the teens. And, honestly, the only reason they are writing is because we have the whole evening off. And, honestly, the only reason we have the evening off is because we are traveling all night. And, honestly, the only reason we're traveling at night is because the churches need EVERY WAKING HOUR OF OUR TIME! love, Ben Whatsup Everyone, I'm very suprised that I'm writing at all. When I get back I'm going to have Wendy's and catch up on some sleep. Traffic here is crazy. Some of us have been riding the disciples motorcycles. Speaking of motorcycles we hit one today. I'm almost positive that there are no traffic laws here. Everyone seems to be getting sick about now. I thought I saw a ... read more

Hey everybody, We finally got the internet back up and running at the hotel! Some services are not very reliable here. Thanks to everybody reading this and praying for us. I have a question for you. How does a church of 215 get 160 visitors? I was really hoping that we could get online last night so that maybe it could be announced at church. I know we are trying to focus on outreach. Saturday we split up into pairs and went to disciple's homes to encourage them and get to know them. Then we left and went to their neighbor's homes to invite them out to church. Jen and I invited almost a whole street! A lot of it was "Hey, look at the white people!" But aside from that, most of these people have ... read more
