So this is India, where even the cats do yoga. This pose is called Lick your Asana Had a chance to get out today and see something of Chennai. Include in this blog are some photos here are of Marina Beach. People were out buying fish, just yanked out of the sea early that morning. In Chennai, the tsunami came ashore here. Just up the beach (a few feet away) was a shanty settlement. The homes are loosely constructed of mud, some bricks, and straw roofs. The tsunami would have completely obliterated the homes. You can still see some of the rubble. Marina beach was fascinating. Further up the beach was a whole section where zillions of Indian boys were playing cricket. Lots of scremin’, legs and arms flailing around and cricket balls (actually tennis balls) ... read more

Hello All Okay, so that wonderful thought of maintaining a web log, now seems like a really daft idea given the 56K modem that is rapidly becoming my latest nemesis. Got to London the other day and had ample time to ponder why it is that every time I’m in London, I’m hermetically attached to a lead weighted backpack, stuck in a tube car that isn’t moving, in the midst of a heat wave! I knew there was a reason I left England. Got to say though it was nice to spend some time with the Londeners. When I lived in England, nothing drove you as mad as the tourists who would harp on about how quaint the English are with their “how are you my love?” and their “yes darlin’s”. But truth be told, there ... read more

errr ... by the way, I've taken the liberty of assuming that you guys are interested in my life. Ego, ego, ego. I've been really trying to keep that in check. Oh well. If you want to be removed from the automatic emailed notifications, let me know and I'll pull you from the list ... and my life :-) So preparing for the trip ... Yikes had the obligatory pre-departure visit from the sisters - Sue via the phone from New Zealand, and Poppy and Ninni live an up front. Not sure if it's maternal instincts but all three had a right go at me as to what to eat, where to sleep, who to talk to, which way to put on my underwear.... Of course, all this harping on about stuff won't have been so ... read more

Some of you may ask, "What the heck do you do all day, this is the third blog in almost as many days?" A good question. Enjoy the pictures. These are some from our first few weeks in Danishpet back in March. Such a big part of our experince at Bethel was the time we spent with the children in the classroom and outside just passing time. The children of Bethel should be an inspiration to us all. ... read more

India has happened to us. Nearly two months and no blog. We're long over due, and the longer we wait, the more things happen and the more we feel we don't know where to begin. We're pretty sure we're in India. But it's not entirely impossible that we're still on the island of Ko Lanta, having a really surreal dream. Henna tatooed hands. Two sets of toe rings. Armfulls of bangles. Jasmine flowers. Spinning tops. Broken cricket bats. Mosquito net tents. Blasting music. Dusty roads. These things seem real. Too real. Hyper-Real. Senses open. Smog. Phone Booths advertise STD local (precariously named local phone service, no thanks). Masala dosa with peanut chutney. Fresh Lime Soda Sweet (soda water with fresh lime juice and syrup you mix together into a giant fiz). Paneer butter masala with butter ... read more

Went back to Chennai where I met Nina from Scotland in my hotel, she was leaving for Thailand the following day. The reason for Chennai was to get the overnight train to Mettapalyam to link to the small train to Ooty. Train was late into Mettapalyam so was fight to get seat on Ooty train but it was worth it as it climbs up from the plains to over 7000 feet in a spectacular journey at some points the gradient is 1:12.5. Stayed in the Reflections Guest House which was a very busy backpackers place. Met Miko and Micheal who had broken his ankle the previous day on a trek and was now lying back with a plaster cast Booked a trek with Antony for 5th and in morning met Lucy who was also on trek ... read more

From Mamallapuram went back to Chennai for train to Madurai. It was so hot when I arrived in the station that an Indian family were fanning themselves so I asked if I could have some of their air and this is how I met Sudha, She was also travelling to Madurai for her grandfather's 80th birthday Madurai was crowded with holiday makers and people visiting the Meenakshi Temple which has wonderful carved and coloured gopurams and a fabulous inside although non Hindus cannot go into the Meenakshi shrine. The Gandi Museunm was also worth a visit as it presented the story from a different perspective from the British history books ... read more

I'm not there yet. But I'm not really here either. I'm now on my 6 month's away. I've spent 3 of them in India, working with the lovey Aruna in Tamil Nadu and am now in Tanzania - mostly working with an NGO focusing on AIDS and HIV - which is just decimating this country. It's been an interesting time. Read more by clicking on the links.... read more

Well these train rides are becoming quite the norm and I know it's not great but to be honest you do get used to it - the dirt, dust, bugs, cockroaches, the heat, locals selling everything from tea to Rubik’s cubes, from maps to squeaky toys - a particular favourite of mine at 3 in the morning... Anyway, we arrive in Chennai fairly unharmed and eventually find a hotel after consulting o' faithful - the lonely planet and once we dodge all the local touts we head off past the beach at sunrise in a taxi to finally head off to a proper bed - only to discover we're 4 hours to early to check in - oh the joys of travel, anyway we quickly waste 2 hours having breakfast and chance our luck and we're ... read more
