... read more

We arrived safe and sound in India on August 21st! My first few days in India have been wonderful and relaxed. Though I was prepared for the incredible heat that everyone warned me about, I was pleasantly surprised that it was much cooler here than in Cambodia. We were greeted by the warm smiling faces of amma, appa and vassu mama. The airport was not very crowded as ours was the only flight arriving at that time so we quickly got our luggage and made our way home to Basat Nagar. Even the traffic was much less than I expected. I found out quickly however that I spoke too soon about the traffic in India. What can I say other than it is completely crazy......cars, buses, bicycles, motor scooters, people walking, and most dangerous of all ... read more

Near the international airport in Chennai (formerly known as Madras) is the small hillock where the apostle St Thomas, the noble missionary and one of the principal diciples of Lord Jesus was assasinated way back in 72 AD. The origin of Christianity in India can be traced to St Thomas Didymas, the apostle. While most of Jesus´ diciples confined their activities to the meditaranian region, St Thomas chose as his field of labor, the distant and little known East, with its strange people and even stranger God´s. He first preached the Gospel in Parthia and then proceeded to the Malabar Coast by sea in the year 52 AD. After establishing seven major Communities of Christians in Kerala, he moved to the Eastern Coast of India and founded a Community in Mylapore in Madras (now Chennai) He ... read more

Hey everyone, We are getting close to coming home. In ways that is really exciting and in other ways it’s really sad. Six weeks was not long enough. But then if we had been here 2 months, or 3, it still wouldn’t have been enough. Never is. We finished up our stuff in Bangalore last Friday. From there we took a train to the costal city of Chennai. It’s much hotter here and the humidity is crazy. We were met here by a friend of the University, Shrini. Shrini works with students from Chennai and tries to connect them with Universities in the states. So he has all sorts of connections with schools all over. He also has friends in the most amazing places. Each day Shrini sets up our schedule. Usually the only thing we ... read more

Kingfisher I’ve had a couple of meetings scheduled in Bangalore this week. Flew in yesterday via Kingfisher Airways. There are a ton of private domestic airlines in India. By Western standards the prices are a bargain. I was particularly taken by Kingfisher because it is operated by this Indian brewery mogul. Most of the Indian restaurants that you go to in the West will have Kingfisher as their beer of preference. Here in India, the company’s got a massive presence. Anyhoo it stuck me as living on the edge to travel with a company that promotes alcohol consumption (drink n' fly)! Bangalore is even busier than I remember it being in 2004. Back then I was in the city to practise yoga. I was kinda hoping to go and see my teacher Masterji, but I’m in ... read more

Before I start, I’d like to welcome Pat and Bob to the blog. Lovely to have you with us and hope to have comments from you regularly! Boogeyman I don’t think I’ve explained the comedy that Indian hotel life entails. I can laugh now, but my first morning in India actually began with quite the fright … Couldn't sleep very well the first morning due to jet lag. Rather than fidgeting in bed, I decided to get up and do some work. Ordered a coffee from room service to keep me company while I got going. Granted it was early, but 20 minutes later I started jonezin for the caffeine. Poked my head out of the room to see if the waiter was on route and instead got the fright of my life. I was met ... read more
