:My Travelogue-SIKKIM Index Introduction 1. Going to Sikkim 2. A tourist’s day 3. A learning day 4. Wonderful sights 5. A tiring day 6. Home is where the hearth is 7. Royal room 8. Lucky day 9. A strenuous day Epilogue Introduction I travelled to Sikkim in the month of May 2011, on holiday with my family. I had a wonderful experience in terms of the natural beauty, weather, wildlife (including leeches – a bit yuck!) mountains and above all, the people. My dad says travel opens the mind – I cannot agree more – the breeze of Sikkim still blows through the open windows of my mind and refreshes me whenever I think of my holiday. I thought I should share my experience with others to egg them on to make this wonderful journey to ... read more

For a relaxing or an adventure holiday sikkim is puuuurfect ! The scenery is like imagining sugary mountains ,crystal clear lakes, rivers etc.,and the white fluffy sky.But i can never forget the smell of fresh grass and big meadows....oh!beautiful. The main thing to eat that you should try there are momos you can have them either non-veg or veg .Now to talk about the landmarks ,well me myself has not gone to many but lets say you'v seen bangalore's M.G road &how stuffed and crowded it is well sikkims M.G road is just the opposite. When i went there i had icecream and had gone to ask for a tissue paper ,well he said that "nope" no where on M.G road do they give tissues & i was shocked! Hello everyone Well I cant believe it is almost a month since we left, how time flies when your having fun - and fun it is. We are in Sikkim which is in the North East and borders onto Tibet and Nepal, we are surrounded by the himalayas and wake up to views of Kanchendzonga the 3rd highest mountain in the world. the mornings are best as the skies are clearer. Ronald has been busy with work projects and Joshua and Charlie did well with 2 weeks of school. The school seemed honoured to have them and was a great experience for the boys. The comparison to the schools in the UK and Holland is amazing. The schools here are very basic with simple classrooms and very little materials but the children seem very content and ... read more

Himalayan range is abode of many of world’s high altitude lakes, many of these high altitude glacial lakes fall in India. World’s 14th highest lake and India’s highest lake is Cholamu lake.A mighty elevation of 18000 feet from the sea level takes Cholamu lake to the top of the “highest lakes” list . While coming down the slope around 300 feet from Donkiala pass ( 18300 feet ) , one gets the first glimpses of this rather moderately sized , almost frozen lake. Donkiala pass is the north most Sikkim route which leads to Tibet border, which is just 5 kms from Donkiala pass. This special geographical location of Cholamu lake makes it special and also makes it a very sensitive army area with Chinese army always putting pressure on international borders. Cholamu lake being just ... read more

The next day we had a breakfast of Tibetan bread and apple pancakes and went to look for Khecheopalri Lake. As Wikkipedia says .... "the sacred Khecheopalri Lake is known as a "wish fulfilling lake", folklore and legends associated with it are many. The folk lore has generated deep religious interest and as a result lake's waters are permitted to be used only for performing rites and rituals. Consequently, a religious fair, one of the largest festivals, is held here every year for two days in Maghe purne (March/April), which is attended by a large number of pilgrims from all parts of Sikkim, Bhutan, Nepal and India. They offer food material to the lake and carry waters of the lake as Prasad (substance that is first offered to a deity and then consumed). People believe that ... read more

I managed to get a permit to go to Sikkim. I hadn't been planning to visit the area, but enough people were saying how nice it was to warrant a visit. It was pretty easy to get a permit. It's quite a trek though. You have to walk to the District Magistrates Office on the far side of town, then over to the Foreigners Registration Office to get the paperwork endorsed, then return back to the District Magistrates Office after which they issue you with a free permit. The next day I caught an early morning jeep to Jorethang to the border between West Bengal and Sikkim, and changed for another jeep to Pelling. It looked like it was going to be hard to find accommodation in Pelling, as the previous evening every room in the ... read more

Well, am doing the last few entries of my India trip almost a year after the trip... Had given up during the trip due to lack of Internet in North East... and all high aspirations of coming back to Mumbai and completing it went to dust, thanks to sheer laziness... but now, after almost a year, someone inspired me to complete the tale... Its not nice to leave a story in the middle... so here's the year back trip's remaining portions... How I remember details? Well, pictures are always the easiest way to recall... here goes, hope at least a few of you would enjoy reading :) ======================================================================== Leaving chilly Darjeeling, we reached the mountain kingdom state of Sikkim, pleasantly surprised that the weather was much warmer, despite Gangtok being at almost the same altitude as ... read more
