The virus of wanderlust attacked hard so had to apply leave and pack the bags to Gorgeous Gangtok - Capital of Sikkim. Going to Gangtok is very different from the usual five star holiday Packages. It is the raw beauty - Untamed beauty. As Gangtok is yet to be connected by railway the best way to reach it is to hire a taxi from Baghdogra Airport or from New Jalpaiguri Station. (Taxi charge was INR 1450 as on 8 Dec 05). My husband was ok with any place as long as i am happy. Such a sweet guy. He retains his sweetness even after seven years of my wedding.... Oops this is not about extolling his virtues but what a swell place this Gangtok is and how to enjoy it better. You need to relish Gangtok ... read more

As I mentioned in the previous entry, the first day of hiking was some 10 miles from Yuksom to Tsoka (10,000 ft.). We walked straight out of town from the guest house we had stayed at the night before and were soon into dense forest. There was a well worn, rocky trail leading to Tsoka (one substantial enough to herd yaks through). On all sides of us were ferns, bamboo, moss covered trees, hanging vines . . . and of course, never far from the trail were steep plunges into the valleys below. Far off on a distant hilltop, we could vaguely discern the handful of trekkers' huts that comprise Tsoka soon after we started walking. Still, it took us nearly six hours to make the journey. Early on, the path fell as much as it ... read more

From the time I arrived in India, I knew that my ultimate destination was to be the Himalayas. As November was winding down, I grew increasingly anxious to get north. I wanted to take a trip hiking in the mountains, and with winter approaching it could only get colder up there. After nearly 24 hours of continuous transport, by rickshaw, then train, then jeep, I made my way from Varanasi to the former British hill retreat of Darjeeling. Darjeeling is famous for its tea plantations, and pleasant restaurants, tea houses, and old English hotels abound. It made for a very comfortable staging area for my trip into the tiny northern state of Sikkim. Darjeeling itself is not actually in the mountains, but is situated at some 7,500 feet, in the foothills of the Himalayas. The train ... read more

9-day Himalayan trek: $180. 8 candy bars and 2 bags of trail snacks: Rs 240. Hearing the sound of my voice fill a glacial valley while I belt out The Star Spangled Banner: priceless. All the bitter drama of a long and mentally exhausting trip over, our last hike ended with the trailhead leading us directly down the hill in the "balmy" afternoon to....... Ralph! Oh, my god, when do we NOT see this guy? But it's poignantly humorous that we continue to have him imposed on us since Goa! We had a good chance to recount some of our best trek stories, though. Like when the cook got tempermental and quit after Thansing and when the remaining porters (dressed in Howard's extra clothes because they were sadly unprepared) knocked off pieces of the roof at ... read more

Things I miss: wearing jeans scotch my laptop computer bras in my size having the same surroundings for more than one week working out It's hard to believe I paid money to be this cold but it makes for a lot of opportunities to remember that I have a sense of humor. Today after a short but steep hike, as the quick and creepy mist blew the snow over us, we arrived at the hut. The huts are the only structures in sight and after a full day of hiking, it's a sweet sight when the little shabby roof pokes out of the mist in the distance. They're never built very well, only meant to be half-assed shelter at best. Here, Mike and I had to warm ourselves by dancing hard and singing 80's disco songs ... read more
