So we arrived at Darjeeling at about 7.30am and made the very exhausting trek up the mountain - heavy rucksacks and all - to the hotel we had decided on (and later advised as it was 'out of town'). After gorging on omlettes - our second meal in India - we finally had some much needed sleep (we had only had one full nights sleep at this point) before an setting off on an exploration of the colonial tea town. Darjeeling is a not your typical Indian town (speaking from experience) and it the most environmentally friendly town in the country thanks to the presence of rubbish trucks. There is a distinct colonial presence at the top of the town, and surrounding it thanks to the vast tea plantations. Lower down the mountain you get a ... read more

Unknown people … unknown place… mere imagination creates curiosity to come across. Most of us are driven by desire, to experience, the real face of such things. In Yoksum there is a popular trekking route to go to Kanchajungha . People from around the world visit this place for trekking to Kanchanjungha. But, I decided to explore a very less known trekking route Hungry, a small village of lepcha community at top of the mountain, & not well known, to the trekkers.... read more

While the jeep ride up to Darjeeling had been a real beauty, it was very much a nothing special Norma in comparison to the rather exceptional drive to Gangtok from Karmi Farm. The journey began with a descent to the valley floor on a steep zig-zagging road (all roads here are steep and zig zaggy), passing through forests we noticed the temperature rise and flora become distinctly more tropical as we descended. Upon reaching the valley floor we came to a bridge which crossed over an impossibly scenic river, this marked the border between West Bengal State and Sikkim state. We were advised to get out of our jeeps and walk across the bridge as Andrew at Karmi Farm had advised us that there were concerns locally about the strength and stability of the bridge, especially ... read more

Our next stop is Pelling in West Sikkim. It is easy to get around Sikkim in "Share Jeeps". They run often & are inexpensive, but crowded. This time we hire a jeep to take us to Pelling. The road is narrow and rough in places & includes very steep climbs and decents. We travel thru beautiful country & what I can only describe as "cloud forest", very lush vegitation, with lots of ferns and moss. Arriving in Pelling we walk to Pemyangtse Monestary, one of the oldest & most important in Sikkim. There, we are blown away by the wooden sculpture on the third floor, "Mandala of Padmasambhava's Heavenly Abode". It is a 3D wooden mandalla that took to monk who built it 5 years to complete. Next day at dawn, the clouds clear for a ... read more

We hire a taxi in Lava to take us all the way to Gangtok. The driver is friendly & we have a good trip. Arriving after dark, & in the rain we are greeted at our Guest House by a man with an umbrella, shown our emaculate room and brought a pot of tea. A brilliant welcome! We are staying at the Hidden Forest Retreat, where the room is spotless, the service impeccable, the food excellent and the grounds are amazing! Besides being a guest house, the hidden forest is also an orchid nursery. On day one in Gangtok we wander through town, make arraingements for our trip to Tsomgo Lake, close to the Tibetan border, check e-mails, exchange money, do some shopping & just look around. We get lost, & then find our way. On the ... read more

We spend a day visiting Rumtek Monestary with our friend Heather who we met at the Hidden Forest Retreat. Rumtek Monestary is the seat of the Karma Kaygu sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Formerly the main monestary was in Tibet, but in 1959, following the Chinese invasion and occupation of Tibet the 16th Karmapa (Leader of the Kaygus) had the Monestary built at Rumtek. He recieved help from the royal family of Sikkim to do this. There had been an older monestary, (Old Rumtek) here, before 1959. It has been remodeled & we visited it too. Rumtek is a beautiful place in a beautiful setting. Since the Death of the 16th Karmapa, there has been controversey about who is the reincarnation as 17th Karmapa.... read more

Over the years several trade routes, which played a major role for the rise of international trades round the globe that we see now, are closed, un-used. They are never used any more for the exchange of commodities and culture. One such route was known as “Silk Road” which has got tremendous historic reference. For 1500 years, until the opening of the world sea lanes in 16th – 17th centuries this route was used for the trade of various commodities like porcelain, tea, paper, medicinal herbs and spices that wended their way from Asia to Europe, returning with gold, silver, wool, horses, colored glass and wine. This route used to join Europe and China running through the heartland of Asia. My interest this time was to travel along this route which exists in India located in ... read more

Planning The Trip A tradition in the family, each year we plan a trip to a new destination and all cousins from all over the globe join in. So in 2007, in the month of September we decided to head out to Sikkim and attempt to trek up to the Goecha La pass - a pass in the mountains of Sikkim. Goecha La pass is famed for rewarding trekkers with a splendid view of the southeast face of the Kanchendzong peak, the world's third highest mountain. After considerable research and survey, we identified a local team of guides who would help us in achieving our goal. ... read more
