Unser Zug fuhr um 11h ab ... read more

Yes, we are back at Pushkar Camel Fair. Yes, we have been here three times. No, we have not tired of visiting the same place. Pushkar continues to attract us to India. It has the energy to provide excitement, interest and new experiences. We know our way around. We have a little routine for how we like to spend our days. We have certain places we like to shop. We know what we want to do and experience. But we also never get bored and our days never feel predictable. We had to wonder if we had overstayed our welcome when we returned to some of our favorite haunts and people recognized us as soon as we arrived. There was the waiter at Sunset Cafe, my ring guy and the man who runs my favorite scarf ... read more

The day arrived that we hadn’t exactly been looking forward to and we broke one of our cardinal rules of travel. We left Camp Bliss before the Pushkar Fair ended and we traveled to another part of India. And the crazy thing? We actually chose to do this! I had heard about this other fair in Rajasthan that was supposed to be as exciting or maybe even better than Pushkar and for years had wanted to check it out, but it never quite fit in our itinerary. Until now. Dad and I said goodbye to our friends from Indian Moments. We said goodbye our camel herd and our new Raika cameleers. We said goodbye to our Aussie friends. And then there was the hardest goodbye of all...we said goodbye to Camp Bliss! Ok, I am teasing, ... read more

We have been to the Pushkar Camel Fair three times and loved every minute we spent there. As you know, it kept us coming back for more and hopefully will again in the future. But each time, we also wondered about the fair that happens after Pushkar, Chandrabhaga. We were never able to work it into our schedule, so this year we made it a point. We left Pushkar a little early and took the day long drive to Jhalawar so that we could be there a day or two before the fair actually began and also be able to enjoy the actual fair days. We have found that we enjoy the days leading up to the actual events almost as much, if not more than the actual fair days. The Chandrabhaga Fair promised color, authenticity, ... read more

We had heard there was supposed to be animal judging on the first day of the fair, but in true India style, we could not get a solid answer as to when or where. So we spent the day wandering around and foolishly using Western logic as to when we might be able to watch the competitions. We have been to and participated in many a fair in the United States and show day is easily recognizable. There is a flurry in the barns. Animals are being washed, groomed and primped beyond belief. The air is filled with the sound of blowers, clippers and aerosol cans spraying. Exhibitors are rushing around like they are chronically late. There are announcements blasted through a speaker system to alert exhibitors of the next class. There are class schedules printed ... read more

To get to the fair, of course! It is no secret, dad and I enjoy going to livestock fairs in foreign countries. We love the energy, the animals, the colors and watching the preparations that remind us of participating in American fairs. We love the food and shopping. We love the relaxing pace. And we love interacting with the people. Some of our days may look pretty boring to onlookers as we often don’t have an agenda, a plan or a timeline. We walk until something catches our eye. We sit and watch whatever catches our eye. We honestly have fair days that include nothing more than just soaking up the feel of the fair. So it is probably not too surprising we might find delight in the smallest of things. That is is the case ... read more

How do you describe the dust stirring, drum beating excitement of horse dancing? How do you convey the fear of near misses with horse hooves and the thrill of watching majestic beasts use their many muscles to contort into art forms? How do you explain the magnetism that draws a crowd in a matter of minutes, if not seconds? If I knew, I would not have struggled so much with this blog! My easy answer is with many photos, but even the photos seem to fall a tad bit short. The event starts with the sounds. The rhythmic beating of the metallic drums draws in the crowd and then the intoxicating sound is punctuated with the crowd’s gasps and cheers as the show progresses. The drummers keep the beat and they seem to conduct the show. ... read more

I understand the attraction of peaceful nights, unobstructed views of the moon and the invigorating essence of crisp air. What I don’t understand is the desire to sleep in a cramped tent on the ground void of plumbing, good food and electricity. I guess this is how glamping was born. Camp Bliss, by Indian Moments, epitomizes the very essence of glamping. It’s provides all the glory of sleeping under stars but also the luxury of hot showers. A perfect marriage, if you ask me. This is not our first time at Camp Bliss in Pushkar, India and I certainly hope it is not our last. When we considered where we would travel this year, part of the draw of India was the appeal of staying at Camp Bliss. I know it sounds a little over the ... read more

Our visits to India have introduced us to some very interesting and like-minded people and their dear to my heart NGO. The organization, Camel Charisma, is part of an effort to preserve the camel population of India by assisting the people who know these camels best, the Raika. Run by Ilse and Hanwant, the camel conservation group puts their energy into creating revenue outlets for the Raika by using authentic camel products. These products include camel hair rugs, camel hair scarves, paper made from camel poo and camel milk soap. All of the sales and proceeds go back into the Raika community so these communities are not forced to sell their herds and look for occupations elsewhere. This year they also began a Raika Journey program where people can come to the Camel Charisma campus and ... read more

Even though we had spent five days together without speaking each other’s language, there were no words needed to explain that today was special. The final day of the walk was electric and the energy surpassed a common language. We were about to bring our gorgeous herd of camels to the fair. We were about to make our grand entrance. And we were about to complete the big task together. We started the morning like every other morning. The hobbles were removed so the camels could graze. One of the camels was milked so we could make tea. We all gathered to make and enjoy our last cup of camel milk chai before we entered the bustle of the fair. While we were drinking our tea, one of the Raika said they were giving the lead ... read more
