HE SAID... We were leaving Jaipur and travelling south east to Ranthambhore. We woke with the call to prayer, organised our packs and jumped into a minibus at 8am for the three and a half hour journey. As we drove out of Jaipur, we again witnessed the indescribable poverty of tent village life on the city’s fringe. We travelled on busy main roads for a short time, but it wasn’t long before we were on the narrow, bumpy roads of rural India. Small villages appeared every now and again, but most of the time we drove through vast expanses of agricultural land covered with mustard and wheat crops. We stopped at 10am for a very expensive chai in a tourist roadhouse (Tiger Treat Resorts) before continuing our journey towards Ranthambhore. We arrived at Raj Palace Resort ... read more

Tigers are a symbol of India and we wanted to have a National Park visit as part of our travelling with Ian and Daniel to see if we could catch a glimpse. It is not something you can bet on. We had met several travellers who had been to Ranthambhore and seen none. We had tried to see wild elephants in Rajaji and seen none. We booked two tours on the internet; one in the morning and one in the afternoon. You ride on a 'canter', a 20 seater four wheel drive jeep. The drive itself is as good as any roller coaster. We got good advice to take the back seats. It meant we could stand up without disturbing others and got good views of wildlife from the sides and back. We were amazingly lucky. ... read more

What are the odds of seeing a Royal Bengal Tiger in the wild? It is definitely a rare occurrence, primarily due to the estimated number of tigers left in India. In the 1930's it was estimated that there were over 40,000. But, even with India's Project Tiger, poaching has reduced the number to @1500. There are 39 tiger preserves in the country, totalling @ 32,000 sq kilometers. But the slide to extinction seems relentless, and the chances of seeing a tiger is becoming rare. On my recent trip to India with Overseas Adventure Travel, we visited Rathambore National Park over two days, March 28 and 29. We had been pre-warned in our briefing that the odds of seeing a tiger was around 100 to 1. So, with our expectations dutifully lowered, we entered the National Park. ... read more

Another Road TripOnce again we awoke to thick fog, we had breakfast, packed up and piled into Jasveer's wagon for the journey to Ranthambore. A roadworks diversion sent us on a route through small country villages. We were enchanted with the small immaculately kept dwellings. Splashes of bright jewel coloured saris hanging on lines, fences and over trees indicated washing day. We saw women and children washing at the communal wells. They and their children tended the flocks of goats which all looked very healthy with shiny coats and long ears. There were pigs and cows and of course camels, some tethered and some pulling carts laden with goods. Women were working in the fields and carried loads on their heads. Children lined up for school in spotless uniforms and the men were driving tractors and ... read more

On Monday morning, we were picked up by our driver and started off for the 250 km from Agra to Sawai Mandhopur, the city close to Ranthambore National Park, where we were going to go on a safari and hopefully see some tigers. The journey would take us six hours altogether. Driving in a car in India usually takes really long, you do an average of 50 km/h because many roads are in a really bad condition with huge potholes, but also because of traffic jams and because it takes you forever to go through the towns and villages on your way. Luckily, we had a little stopover in Fatehpur Sikri, another Mughal Fort that is very impressive. It is built of red sandstone and simply huge. It lies on top of a hill and offers ... read more

Warning! This blog contains negative comments! But first, here are some positive ones: We'd had a great time in , but were now on our way to ten days of tranquil wildlife safaris and bird-watching, starting with the well-known tiger reserve of Ranthambore (that's the negative bit, which comes later). On the way, we called in at the Monkey Temple, Galtaji, about 10 kilometres from Jaipur on the road towards Agra. This is not a well-trodden tourist site like most other places hereabouts. You'll be asked to make a tiny donation if you plan to use a camera and, for a few Rupees, you can buy some peanuts to feed the monkeys from the man at the entrance; he'll put them into little bags that he makes from old newspapers. You might find a snake charmer ... read more

January 30… I felt much better this morning after getting such a good rest. A morning transfer to the temple town of Khajuraho was arranged – the 5 hour car ride through mostly farming towns was quite enjoyable. Khajuraho is a bustling place, and Caroline, our Irish travel mate, was thrilled to see the first real coffee shop in days right across from the hotel. Masala chai, not coffee, reigns supreme in India. We met a local guide at the Western Temple Complex in the mid-afternoon, who showed us the highlights of the Western Temple Complex. Legend has it that the town was founded by Chardravarman, the son of the moon god Chandra, who seduced a beautiful maiden who bore a son. The son (founder of the Chandela dynasty) built the most of the 85 temples ... read more

Awoke early to leave at 7am for a tiger safari. Early breakfast of vegetable curry, for some, and cornflakes for the others! Freezing cold morning so multiple layers of clothes needed and blankets supplied by the hotel. Taken into the National Park by a 20 person canter, an open topped bus, with poor suspension! After picking up several other people at various hotels we arrived at the Ranthambore National Park via a large stone gateway. Several other jeeps and canters aslo arrived at the same time and various hawkers hassled the vehicles selling fleeces and wooly hats with National park logo on. Lots of Indian tourists along with swedes, English and Danish. We eagerly anticipated the first sighting of a Tiger so looked carefully for any signs of the animal. Several times fresh foot prints were ... read more

After an interesting night's sleep in a large double bed (between Alice and Hanna talking non-stop in their sleep), we all woke feeling slightly bewildered and deafened by the evening's noises! Non stop horns blaring and dogs barking, street wallahs setting up for the day and men clearing their throats..... The sensory delights of India. Breakfast was taken on the top of the hotel with views down to the street below. The eye level view was fascinating with all of Delhi waking up, mainly on the roof tops. We felt somewhat voyeuristic watching the men washing and carrying out their daily ablutions, not all of them on the roof! 10.00am we were met by our lovely driver, Vijay, who loaded up our bags as we were 'hurried' into the car to avoid the increasing hassle that ... read more
