On Wednesday, our 2nd day in Mamma, we were taken to a local restaurant in the Indian quarter, far from the tourist area (in essence if not geography!), and had a real Indian food experience. Masala Dosa cooked on a hot stone, egg poori, which was a mix of egg, tomato, onion and garlic all cooked together on the stone and chopped up. It was all sublime! We were the only Westerners there. We drank mineral water (to be on the safe side!), and with extra dosas and sambar, the bill was just over 1 pound! Why go down the tourist strip? (When we went for breakfast that morning and I asked for something of the 'Indian Breakfast' section of the menu, the waiter told me there was nothing Indian available!) That evening, we bought a ... read more

Pondicherry is where we found a little bit of France in Southern India together with an international community of free spirits. Up until 1954 the town was a French colony and still maintains its French character with tree lined boulevards with French names and the policemen wearing kepis. Many of the buildings in the French quarter are maintained in their original colonial style. The promenade along the seafront could have been lifted from a French sea-side town. Other than the town itself the main attraction is the international community of about 550 free spirits living in the nearby 'village' of Auroville just outside Pondicherry. Set up in the Summer of Love in 1968 it is a community of dedicated souls, many from Europe, living their lives in peace and harmony with their surroundings and fellow beings. ... read more

The ordeal with the stolen bag was not over yet. When we got to our stop, Jalgaon, it was around 8pm. We had a shower and went straight to the police station to report the stolen bag - bad mistake not getting any dinner before hand. There was a lot of arguing with the police as to why they couldn't do it, then they brought us to another town half an hour away on the train, where they argued amongst themselves over whose jurisdiction it fell under. Finally, the head honcho came in and we've never seen so many people jump to attention so quickly! All of a sudden they were writing up my report for me and we were back on the train. By the time we got back to our hotel it was after ... read more

Well I am now on a train from Kolkata to Varanasi. I would like to say on my own for the first time, and whilst that is true I don’t ever seem to be without a talking companion!! On this journey there is a very enthusiastic 19 year old girl called Kab who is chatting happily to me about how she loves London and Switzerland!! (her mum is also here and has already told her to take my email address for when she comes to England!! Well I left you in Madurai and the beautiful Sri Meenakshi temple and from there Pierino, Flurina and I got a train to Pondicherry. What a place! Pondicherry is the ‘French town’ in India. It is the place where you can eat proper French pastries and where I saw the ... read more

Geo: 10.9167, 79.8333 PondicherryAfter breakfast we departed for our trip to Pondicherry which lies 160 km south of Chennai and has an imminent French influence. The old town with the seashore boulevard has some of the old Colonial buildings which house the French institutions, private homes and businesses. We went for a walk on the promenade in front of the sea where we saw several landmarks including the statues of Mahatma Gandhi, Jeanne d'Arc and Dupleix, the elegant War Memorial which was interesting. We also saw churches, museums temple, ashram and we had a delicious ice- cream and coconut water near the beach. The Point Calimere wildlife sanctuary and the mangrove forests of Pichavaram are also nearby but we did not have time to visit there and we headed to Mahabalipuram.... read more

I left Trichy to go to Pondicherry by car. This city is now officially known as Puducherry but that only cuts the name down by one letter, so the old diminutive of Pondy is still in use - and sounds much nicer, I think. The French name is also very slightly shorter, as they spell it Pondichery with only one "r". But any advantage this may give them is lost because they use an acute accent over the "e". The journey here took about four hours and was a very interesting one. Soon after leaving the town we crossed some marshlands where I saw many people doing their washing in the streams and masses of clothes hanging up to be dried on washing lines stretched across the marshy land. Our way was briefly held up by ... read more

Whenever I sit to write these blogs, my normal routine consists of compiling tid bits of information jotted down in a journal and trying to weave something into logical form for the readers enjoyment. Last night I looked at my point form notes and was at a loss as to how to formulate a blog tale.....thus, my solution is to do the opposite, in true Indian fashion, and tell each point-form note as it lays in my journal which should give way to complete and utter randomness (how exciting!). Oh, and please mind the spelling mistakes Spell check is not working and despite 18 years of schooling my knees would still shake at a spelling bee.... But before I begin, I had to make one clever "tip of the hat" (as always) to the title. This ... read more

Not too many people crowding behind you to do marketing, not too many strange eyes gazing your movements lets you live your holiday with your peace of mind. This Union Territory is in the east sea shores of Southern India. An heritage city as far as tourism in India concerned. Pondicherry has other names like Pondy, Puducherry.
